Daniel Great review. You make me wonder if I shouldn't give this one another chance, some day.

Terry Thanks! I still like LotR and _The Silmarillion_ more than _The Hobbit_, but it's a great tale especially when you take it on its own terms. I found listening to the Tolkien Professor's lectures on the book helped me to see some of the elements that used to bother me about it in a different light.

Jeff Celander Tolkien wanted to rewrite the hobbit so that all of the inconsistencies would be cleaned up but did not get the chance. The LOTR books did undergo some alterations after the first release to help smooth out the Hobbit story line issues.

Ainu You made me think of Fëanor singing Lazy Lob and Crazy Cob's song LOL

Terry Yeah, I always imagine Elrond shaking his head and sighing as he hears the Elves singing their tra-la-la song when the Dwarves come to Rivendell. :)

Ava Dohn My mind twists to the fact that between the Hobbit and the Fellowship of the Ring there are hundreds of years. The regrowth of evil took many years but Bilbo faced it, at it's weak point. So the alteration in thematic elements between stories is more understandable. And if the themes of the threeRing novels was so important Tolkien could have rewritten the Hobbit to fit them even better, but we have what's shared as was written when.
