Aphrodite ok so I finished it:) so I give it a 3.5. It could have been better. At first it was eeh ok ok blah blah whatever boriiiing then it got really interesting!:) I hate when authors dont explain their world! wth is ammo? I know that in greek ammo is sand but thats it? that dont make sense? so would you elaborate please??? I LOVED how she made a new world bc its new nd fresh not the same ol same ol pattern of books I've read. That was a plus! I liked it although it had some faults. it wasnt the best, I am only looking forward for the next one just to see where this will lead. These r my opinions lol yu might have different but please share!:)

Judith (Judith'sChoiceReads) I'm happy you liked it, and I agree the book itself could be a lot worse, but in my opinion it hasn't grown entirely on me yet. I keep finding myself offended at Dru for a lot of things:

1. her condescending attitude overall

2. her reference to Graves as a "half-breed" sorry but I actually scoffed at that. It's as though she makes him out to be this oddity - weird limbs and all - and the fault is most definitely the author's as well.

3. Dru just doesn't seem real. It's as if St. Crow is trying so hard to make her reek B.A. YA heroine but she just comes off as so unidentifiable instead.

The thing is though, I like the premises for the future books in this series and think that maybe it will get better? For now I'm overly sceptic and feel the rating so far to be around a 3 star. The new world aspect is great but I hate how Dru just looks down on everyone else who isn't aware of it, like she's better somehow because she knows how to barter for spooky things and is capable of identifying the monsters out there.

Sorry for ranting :(

Aphrodite Yes thank yu! Ya I feel the next books r gonna be better:p

wow and i thought i was the only one that HATED this book nad these series and these shitty-ass heroines (like twi) LOL no offense.

message 5: by Aphrodite (new)

Aphrodite no no its ok lol yu read the whole series? how was it?

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

lol only this one and it was crap.

message 7: by Aphrodite (new)

Aphrodite hahahha agree;)

Judith (Judith'sChoiceReads) Sarah wrote: "lol only this one and it was crap."

No offense taken, this IS crap! Kudos to you for finishing the whole book, though :)

Aphrodite hahaha:p

Wendy I argued with myself the whole way through about whether or not I would finish it. I, too, hated Dru! And mentioned a bunch of stuff about the description of Graves, too (especially the bits where she finds him marginally attractive, despite him being 'ethnic'. Argh!). I forgot that the whole Christophe's hair thing was stupid and served no purpose.

Great review. :)

Thanks! And I'm glad it isn't just me who feels this way :) I wanted to like it...I simply couldn't, because I think mixed-race people are beautiful and I hate Dru. Thanks for liking my review!!

Wendy No problem. I had been recommended the book by a friend whose recommendations thus far had been stellar, so I read through some of the reviews to see if anyone else felt the same as I did!

I also think mixed-race people are beautiful (damn them for their stunning looks!), and being 'full Asian', the 'half-Asian' part really bugged me.

message 14: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh finally sommbody else that hates this book ): it's pretty irritating and ugh.

message 15: by Aphrodite (new)

Aphrodite agree

message 16: by Laura (new)

Laura I agree...I first picked up this book because it was featured in the back of the VA books...but when I startd it, I hated it. For some reason, I did feel as though I HAD to finish it, because I kind of hate not-finishing books. But boy, it was a waste of time. I HATED it.....

message 17: by Aphrodite (new)

Aphrodite I completely agree with you:/ but I still want to read the second book:/ see how it goes? maybe it gets better???

message 18: by Wendy (new)

Wendy I'm not going to put myself through the second book in the hopes that it gets better. I'd rather take a chance on a different series and author. There are so many books in this genre alone that I'm not going to waste more of my time with Dru. One time was enough.

message 19: by Aphrodite (new)

Aphrodite ur right ur right but I think Im goin to give it a try:)

Fair enough, I'm done with the series, but if you like it let me know!!

I agree with you, there doesn't seem to be a point in reading something you aren't going to like! Especially if you don't exactly get along with the main character - in this case Dru - like I don't. We'll cut our losses :)

That's the worst, right?! When you have the book and don't feel that inclination to finish...I wouldn't feel guilty about it though, reading is supposed to be enjoyable. If you aren't having a good time, drop it like it's hot!

Aphrodite hahahaha true true;)

♥ Innocent Lamb ~ Forever Reading ♥ - AKA Smarties I'm really not sure if I should read this book. At the moment, I'm thinking that I'd be rather offended by the book because I have some 'half-breed' friends. But seriously, from the reviews I've read so far, people seem to either dislike (maybe even hate) Dru or they just don't care about her.

message 25: by Miniwriter12 (new)

Miniwriter12 UGH! Has the author even seen Asian kids? They are adorable! My friend, who is Korean, has a little sister who's 12. She is the prettiest/cutest girl I have ever seen! She can beat the cheerleaders on looks any day (Well, she is on the cheer team for her middle school, but yeah. She's THAT pretty. And my friend is THAT pretty, too.) And mixed people? They are ADORABLE. This author= crazy!

I agree with that assessment! (Sorry for the way late reply!!) But you either like the girl or hate her, hopefully the heads-up about the mixed-race thing will make the book easier to read?

Agreed! They are so, SO adorable! Goodness, I gush every time :) It's been a while since I've read the book and my rage has died down considerably lol, but I don't think race is a reason at all to treat anyone differently, it is the most stupid reason ever.

♥ Innocent Lamb ~ Forever Reading ♥ - AKA Smarties Okay... so I tried to read it. I tried to be open minded and I tried to give thi book a running chance. But nope. I struggled to read even half of the book: I just didn't have any interest in the book after about halfway. *sigh*
