Sparrow Yes. This was a difficult one to rate. I went for total inflation because I liked her character more as a person than the chick in Soulless, who didn't really make sense if we're being totally honest. And with Skye inflation, I don't think this would be proper at a two. With PtP and Fulk? That would be sad.

Ceridwen Yeah, it's Skye in the works again for me. I almost gave it a two, but it really isn't as bad as PtP and Fulk - I did honestly enjoy reading it, but I couldn't recommend it to anyone at this point, which makes it a two, in my book.

No, Alexia really doesn't. We're given all of this information about her, and then much of it is violated, like the stupid fashion thing. This chick doesn't have much of a character - she's a series of quips. In the right situation, I like quips, but...

Eh?Eh! SOM should be set aside as an outlier. It's completely wrecking your rating systems.

Mariel I heart the zombie sock monster. I'd foot the bill for that if not the book.

Meh, I like leaving Skye in a one-star time-out chair. I think maybe my ratings for this genre are more accurate with SOM in a weird way - these books are not going to be for me, and they start at a disadvantage. SOM gives them a head start. Plus, I reserve the right to be entirely arbitrary in my ratings.

Elizabeth I don't think you were being bitchy enough; Skye is definitely skewing your ratings. :-)

Brainycat "...love is just another word for no one left to kill."

That's the most romantic thing I've read in months.

Ceridwen Oh, she totally is. I read that other zombie thing I won in a fit of insomnia, and rating that is really bothersome. So much better written than this - so much - but some major fails in the middle of the book. This didn't fail so much as not try. What to do?

Edit: I didn't win in a fit of insomnia - I read it.

I agree with this. I still kept some books at one star, but it really puts things in perspective more than throwing them off. I also agree with what Caris said on his Fulk thread about needing to really hate a book for it to be a one-starer.

This is a good point. But, she does love Joss. I feel like maybe she does have character, but no development, where maybe Alexia has development. Plus, as you say, she does kill her neighbor with a toilet seat. If that's not character, then I don't know what is.

Greg Ahh!! The Zombie is wearing a pin with a Union Square Squirrel on it!!!

message 13: by karen (new)

message 14: by Greg (new)

Greg zombies don't need to wear seatbelts.

message 15: by karen (new)

karen that's how they get loose!

I will not be surviving the zombie apocalypse. One of the rules is buckle up, I know.

Union Square Zombie Squirrels represent!

message 17: by Greg (new)

Greg That's what was missing from Monster Island, there could have been zombie squirrels in the Union Square scene to go along with the pigeons.

Rachel Hahahahahhaaa!!

Kat Kennedy I thought this was a very well thought-out and interesting review! I'll probably read this book because I love zombie fiction but you've given me a lot to think about. As sad as it is to say, the only thing that would make my marriage more wonderful WOULD be a zombie apocalypse. Mr Kat loves hitting things with bats and baby Kat thinks it's very funny.

message 20: by Ceridwen (new)

Ceridwen Ha! There's a lot about this book that is fun and enjoyable, and I would love to hear what you think about the ending. I couldn't get into it in my review, because I'm allergic to the spoiler box, but that's where my real trouble was. I will just say I understand troubles with in-laws, but...

message 21: by Jay (new)

Jay You're completely right. I managed to think my way from enjoying this to becoming utterly annoyed by the characters in the space of 5 pages and now I'm so aggravated that I no longer want to read anymore. If a book makes me say "you people are assholes" more than twice, I stop reading.

message 22: by Ceridwen (new)

Ceridwen Yeah, this book definitely doesn't hold up to scrutiny well. I read it in a sitting, which may be the way to go. Better luck with your next read!

message 23: by Pam (new)

Pam Godwin Freakin loved this review. Makes me want to read it, not want to read it, want to read it...oh hell, I'll TBR it and decide later.

Well put, Ceridwen!

message 24: by Ceridwen (new)

Ceridwen I would never say don't read this - it's totally fine, worth a half-attentive read while you're on a plane or whatever. Just don't flinch and think about it too hard - it's fun that way.
