Titus Groan is the central figure of Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast books. The novels were originally intended to follow Titus from birth to death, but Peake only wrote as far as his early adulthood.
Titus is the heir to the earldom of Groan, the 77th such earl. He spends the first book as an infant, but eventually grows into a rebellious, taciturn young man.
He is also featured in the novella 'A Boy in Darkness', also by Peake. edit
