Liesel Meminger
about
A young, tomboyish pre-adolescent girl and the protagonist of the story. She is fostered by the Hubermanns when her father and mother, both Communists, are most likely sent to Dachau Concentration Camp although the book leaves its readers to make their own assumptions pertaining to the fate of Liesel's biological parents. Her younger brother, Werner, dies on the way to the Hubermann household. Despite her many refusals to Rudy's requests for a kiss, her love for him is not unclear, as seen by the lustful nature of some of her fantasies of him. At the end of the book, she does kiss Rudy when he lies dead on Himmel Street. edit
