Young readers in Harlem.
LitWorld has an ambitious goal: help 1 million children learn to read by 2014. Founded in 2007 by Pam Allyn, the nonprofit advocates for literacy around the globe with a multidimensional strategy.

Partnering with local community leaders, teachers, and parents, LitWorld boasts an array of literacy and educational programs. Girls clubs in Nairobi, Kenya, Accra, Ghana, and Harlem, New York, all focus on empowering girls during the crucial ages of 8 to 16. Book drives in Ghana, Liberia, Kenya, and Haiti bring books to those who need it most. In Iraq, LitWorld has copartnered with the Sponsor Iraqi Children Foundation to create a motivational children's book that will reach out to the war-torn country's estimated 2.5 million young orphans. And LitWorld's reach continues to expand. In March 2010, the organization's inaugural World Read Aloud Day reached readers in 35 countries. There are a million ways you can contribute with LitWorld.
