A contemporary fable about a magical remedy for a baby who won't stop crying. Miriam is a baker whose bread is full of smells to make your nose twitch and tastes to make your tongue tingle. Miriam's own favorite cinnamon bread so delights Sebastian, a musician who enters her shop, that he buys it every day for a year and then asks her to marry him. After a baby is born to...more

I happened to read Jacqueline Woodson's Pecan Pie Baby and Nicola Winstanley's Cinnamon Baby in the same week, resulting in this double review. Both were sweet picture books about an expected new baby, each with its own flavoring. Both feature somewhat spare, whimsical illustrations in subdued shades, by award winning illustrators-- the Ezra Jack Keats award for Pecan Pie Baby's Sophie Blackall, and Canada's Governor General's Award for Cinnamon Baby's Janice Nadeau.

This simple but lovely story with whimsically charming illustrations is a delight for the imagination. I could almost smell cinnamon when I read it. I can imagine reading it to a child and then going to the spice rack afterward to smell the herbs and spices mentioned in the story - basil, ginger, allspice, coriander, rosemary, and of course cinnamon. It's the story of Miriam the baker who bakes glorious breads in her bakery, but always makes the cinnamon bread last so that the smell will linger...more

Miriam is a wonderful baker and her favorite bread to make is cinnamon bread. Sebastian comes every day to Miriam’s bakery for a year and they marry. Soon they have a lovely child. The baby cried every day every hour and no one could figure out what to do to stop it from crying. Finally, Miriam took the baby to the bakery and made cinnamon bread and the baby stopped crying.

The whole book has a lovely brown color and almost seems to give off a cinnamon-y smell.

Cinnamon Baby is an endearing love story about an artisan baker, Miriam, who has a sweet singing voice only matched by the enticing smells coming from her bakery. Her voice--and her delicious bread--captures the attention of dashing violinist Sebastian. They fall in love, marry, and have a baby who has big brown eyes, dusky skin, and the smell of sweet milk.

However, the baby is unhappy as soon as she leaves her mom's warm bed. She cries day and night, and after different attempts to calm her, Mi...more

Cinnamon baby is a unique children’s book in its depiction of a biracial couple. Without making a big deal out of the different cultural background of the main characters, the author depicts the parents of the Cinnamon baby as regular people who met under normal circumstances. The plot centers around the birth of the baby, who cries incessantly. In one hilarious scene, the baby’s tears spring from its carriage like a fountain as a stray cat uses an umbrella to shield himself from the downpour. F...more

Miriam has her own little bakery where she makes bread with smells that "make your nose twitch and tastes to make your tongue tingle." Everyone loves her bread, including Sebastian, who finally asks Miriam to marry him. Soon enough, a baby comes along, and they are all happy until the baby starts to cry and will not stop. After trying everything, Miriam finally has an idea as she looks down on her little raisin.
Cute story with charming, soft-toned illustrations. I know what it is like to have a...more

My response to the book: I enjoyed the story as the new parents learned what would soothe their new baby. I also appreciated that the fact that the couple were of different races was treated in a matter-of fact nature in the story. Their baby, the color of cinnamon, was soothed by the smells of ci...more

From Canada; illustrator from Montreal; pictures do have a very French quality (I know I need to define that). Story of a baker, who meets her husband Sebastian, and has a baby. All is well at first, but then the baby starts crying, and won't stop, no matter how comforted. Until Miriam returns to baking and makes her cinnamon bread ...
Nice use of language as well, Miriam's bread was "full of smells to make your nose twitch and tastes to make your tongue tingle." And specific details, "she make a...more

In this modern fable, Miriam is a baker who combines ingredients and song to create wonderfully delectable varieties of bread. Her aromatic cinnamon bread draws
Sebastian into her bakery and a year later they are married. Their beautiful cinnamon baby with dusky skin is born and the family is happy until the child begins to cry inconsolably. After trying everything, Miriam returns to her bakery where she bakes cinnamon bread and, as the “cinnamony smell... fill[s] all the child’s senses,” the bab...more

Miriam was a baker who had her own little bakery where she made wonderful breads. She always saved the cinnamon bread for last because it was her favorite. As she made the bread, she sang the songs of her childhood, weaving them with the scent of cinnamon in the air. Then one day a young man named Sebastian bought some cinnamon bread and continued to by a loaf every day for a year. Finally, he proposed to Miriam and she said yes. Soon a baby was on the way, but when the baby arrived it cried and...more

Oh, this book is so sweet and lovely. Miriam is a baker and she marries Sebastian. They are an interracial couple (not that the book ever says that) and they have a lovely dusky brown baby who can only be soothed by the smell of cinnamon. I love to read books where the characters and families are out of the mainstream and yet those differences are NOT the point of the story. This is one to add to the tiny pile of books that show children that families come in all shapes, sizes and colors.

This delicious picture book made me smile the whole way through. I love baking, and I love how the smells and scents of baking were ever present, influencing my reading and the behavior of the little baby. The biracial couple is a brilliant touch - I may buy this for my niece who might be a bit old for the story, but she is also biracial and I think she'll appreciate seeing a cinnamony-skinned baby.

A cute and charming story. Miriam owns a bakery and bakes all kinds of breads "full of smells to make your nose twitch and tastes to make your tongue tingle." She marries Sebastian and the two of them have a sweet little baby. The baby cries and cries until Miriam realizes that the ritual of baking bread soothes her child.

A sweet and comforting book! I recommend it for students in K - 1. The main characters are biracial, which is also a nice tough. I'm not sure that this book is extra special o...more

Cinnamon Baby, by Nicola Winstanley is a multicultural book about a baby born to an interacial married couple. I loved this book. Although the father of the baby is brown skined and the mother is white skinned, nothing is said in the book about this. It is a wonderfull tale of love, a fussy baby, and a wonderful bakery.

It was the most beautiful and perfect child that had ever been born. ... UNTIL IT BECAME COLICKY. Sweet little love story filled with the smell of baking bread and the soft sounds of songs being sung. Oh, and the earth shattering cries of an unhappy newborn... would love to hear that it was true!

Makes me want to be a baker and reminds me of my own colicy babies. You'll try anything as a mother to make your baby happy. I wish I knew about cinnamon.
