when i first started reading for pleasure, i picked up a few books from a table display at a barnes and noble, based mostly on vague name recognition. when i got home, my big brother steve observed that i'd brought back a copy of "on the road" and insisted that i first read its inspiration, and bought me a copy of this online. i never finished it, having found the phoenetic spellings of 20s harlem dialect nearly impossible to decipher, and therefore never moved on to read "on the

Read in January, 2000
Another book from my college lit days. This from my Harlem Renaissance lit course. So very good. Succinctly yet beautifully written--really captures Harlem during that specific time. Really stands out in my mind.
