The main reason that I did not like this book was because it was shoved down my throat by a fundamentalist Christian when I was twenty years old and living in a halfway house because I had pretty much stuffed up my life. To be honest, I had been charged with a number of criminal offenses, stolen about $1000.00 (in 1990s money) off of my parents, and was hanging around with a guy that was not only a bad influence, but also a bad smell. Before I go into this book I might say a word or two about th...more
Even though I gave 5 stars to This Present Darkness, I love Piercing The Darkness more. The second book has touched me much deeply and has even moved me to tears as I “journeyed” with Sally Beth Roe until she finally found her salvation. I love the hide-and-seek-cat-and-mouse mystery that shrouds Roe’s character, and I feel strongly attached to her in a very emotional way. I can relate to the questions and confusions she laid down in her letters to Tom Harris. I especially loved that the story h...more
Was a bit sceptical about this book before I started. However, during the course of reading it my children and I were looking at some clips on youtube from Cbeebies. While we were waiting for the very innocent Iggle Piggle to come on there was an advert which we couldn't skip for 21 seconds for the film "Twilight" which looked very dark and oppressive, although I believe is accepted as a normal part of youth culture at the moment. In addition I was reminded about our local shopping centre which...more

This is not the kind of book I'd like to read again, but enjoyed it at the time for its "explanation" / "insight" / at least its imaginary way of creating a Spiritual Realm we humans may choose to relate to. I would however recommend it to people interested in finding a fresh way of trying to understand the spiritual world.

This is the second book and sequel to This Present Darkness and I found it to be as good if not better than the first. I need to point out it is heavily Christian in its content but don't let that put you off. Although I am not a Christian, I did find this to be quite a good read and was given to me (with This Present Darkness) while I was going through a particularly difficult period in my life. It provides an interesting and contemporary look at Angels & Demons in a setting that is quite b...more

This sequel was just as exciting as the first book and deals with a subject that is becoming an increasing problem and that is the encroachment of anti Christian bias in our schools. The quasi-religious activities such as using a mantra or acquiring a spirit guide are being practiced in our public schools and are not benign exercises in values clarification. In areas where there are no Christian schools, or other alternatives, people are turning more and more to homeschooling.

This Present Darkness takes place in the typical small town of Ashton where nothing much ever seems to happen. Until . . . a skeptical reporter and a prayerful pastor begin to compare notes. They suddenly find themselves fighting a hideous New Age plot to subjugate the townspeople, and eventually the entire human race.

I like this book, but not as much as "This Present Darkness," the first book. With Baal Rafar fallen, the Stongman decides to work on a different cult, that focuses on spirit guides. Spirit Guides are really demons that take the shape of things that a human may find attractive, such as unicorns to a small girl, a beautiful Goddess-like creature for a woman struggling with guilt, you name it. God sees this, and sends His angels to battle the so-called spirit guides, while at the same time protect...more
Very engaging book, and definitely a well put together story. The spirit world element was really interesting, however, it guesses at some things about how God works through his angels that don't come from the Bible. I'm assuming Peretti is just taking a little license there to make it work. The story has a lot of parallels with things that are happening in our country in terms of the attack on religion, and Christianity especially, from groups like the ACLU and others. Whether or not there are...more
This book is classic Peretti. He creates a situation in which the angels of heaven do actual battle with the demons of hell in a bid to help a group of people in a small town overcome the biggest personal and legal battles of their lives. Peretti is masterful at creating a story in which he has asked the question, "What if spiritual warfare looked like real warfare?", and then making that come to life in his words.

I thought the first book was better, but it still had that supernatural suspense. I couldn't go on reading the rest of this series, because it seems too heavy after a while. You sort of feel like you need a break. Like come back to reading the next book after a couple of months. Its like the movies, where you are on the edge just waiting to see whats happening next. It's not as great as the first book, but still has its purpose of putting the understanding of good and evil into fiction writing....more
Wow, another awesome book by Frank Peretti. This book had the duality of the intrigue and struggle both on the physical and spiritual realms happening simultaneously. It was very well written and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I real page turner, just like his first.
It was a real eye opener to me how the book talks about how special interest groups will use trial law to further their causes and build up rulings to bend the law in their favor, one ruling at a time. This is a "fiction" book, but this h...more

Loved, loved, loved this book! The symbolism that Peretti uses in his novels makes me think for hours, days, even weeks afterwards about what every small, minute detail could have meant. The battle for good and evil is alive in large proportion as well as inside each individual person. This book, as well as all of Peretti's novel have touched me deeply and inspired me to attempt to inspire others. Peretti will always be an author that inspired me to reach out to the world and follow my own dream...more

Frank E. Peretti’s fast-paced suspense has a 1989 copyright date, and yes, in some places it definitely shows its age, but overall, the story is even more applicable today. It’s a tale of Good verses Evil set on all playing fields–on earth, and in the spirit realm. The actions of humans spur or bind the actions of angels, both the Heavenly hosts and Satan’s legions. Peretti slips between the realms frequently, and not without the jolt of sudden shifts, but after the reader gets accustomed to his...more

Reading the Sequel to "This Present Darkness" prior to the original, I was thrown into the story without foreknowledge. It would have helped immensely to read these books in the proper order. They follow one right after the other.
Supernatural twists, thrilling plots, and unforgettable characters come to life through the pages of this book. It's one book that you will not want to put down - may even give you nightmares. I would highly recommend this book to those interested about prayer's impact...more

I liked this even better than the first one! I really enjoyed the parts when the angels would nudge people to do something. It was just cool.
The characters are easy to relate to; I'm sure everybody could find someone at least.
Like the first book, there are a lot of characters to keep track of,so you need to be fully conscious when you read.
And like the first book, this is a pleasant reminder that prayer does work and God is in control. I'm sure all of us can use that!

This book only gets two stars for its ability to create effective suspense, and the inventive narrative structure which combines the drama of the human world with the drama of the conflict between angels and demons. Otherwise, this narrative is full of stereotyping from an evangelical conservative perspective, which in retrospect makes many of its claims laughable. For this reason, it has not stood up well under the test of time. Some of the outrageous evangelical stereotypes espoused by the aut...more
This was the first book that I ever read and enjoyed by Peretti. However, I have to warn that anyone who's turned off by strong Christian themes shouldn't read this book (I sort of feel like that shouldn't be necessary to throw in there, since the author is a well known Christian author, but apparently some people just don't do their research.)
I guess what irritates people the most about this book is that they feel like it's focused too much on "self-works" since the main character has to fight...more

I remember when my mother purchased both books, This Present Darkness and Piercing the Darkness. She tried to get me to read them when I was in high school but all the angels and spiritual warfare stuff really spooked me back then. I snagged, Piercing the Darkness, from her house a few years ago and finally started reading it earlier this year. I found it to be a slow read but I’m glad I stuck with it.

This book is a bit of a guilty pleasure. Some days I just crave flat, evil cultist baddies and a good ol'fashioned exorcism (though, unlike every movie ever, these actually work!). It is immensely stupid, yet fun to read. I would, however, advise Mr. Peretti to cut down on his cast; it doesn't really help the book.

It's been a while since I read this book, but I remember when I read it I was pleasantly surprised to find such great writing in a Christian work of fiction. I'm so used to embellished Bible stories, which used to be the only kind of fiction a Christian author could get published. Things have changed, and I think we have the great work or people like Frank to thank for it. This was a great visual of spiritual warfare, the 2nd book if I remember correctly. (The first being This Present Darkness)
First Frank Peretti book I read. Much along the lines of the "Left Behind" series. Earthly warfare of a team of lawyers, much akin to our current day ACLU, trying to destroy Christians/Christianity in thru little, devious ways. And a Spiritual warfare for the survival of Christians. Good book. The only thing I didn't like or care about is Peretti introduces at LEAST one new character, sometimes three or four, per chapter for most of the book. Trying to remember them all and keep them straight ma...more
Sequal to This Present Darkness. I could not put this down until I finished it. Classic spiritual warfare showing the unsettling weaknesses in the church that empower and confirm the brilliance of the enemy's strategy. It highlights his plan to divide and conquer and will expose and deal with all to realistic apathy and pettiness that easily besets us. Also shows how we limit the power of the angelic hosts to fight on our behalf. Great writing and imagery.
I liked this book a lot! It's about just like a murder mystery type where at first you have no idea what's going on and there are 40 million characters but as the story goes on you start to figure out stuff and it's really suspensful, but there's another side to everything (that makes the story more interesting and kinda helps tie everything together) since there are angels and God and the devil and stuff!
Wow, that's probably the longest run-on sentence ever.

Well, this is the fourth or fifth time that I've read Piercing the Darkness, though it has been *many* years since my last perusal.
It is *obvious* that this book was written in the early '90s. That aside, it is still an enjoyable read. That said, reading it as a more well-rounded adult, outside the conservative Christian circles I was nutured in, the simplistic "demons under every doily" is a bit tiring.

This novel is the second Christian thriller by Frank Peretti, and sort of a sequel to This Present Darkness. It portrays problems in small-town America which are mirrored in the spiritual realm with angels and demons battling for lives and souls. It's exciting enough that it would probably be enjoyed by anyone who likes action-packed thrilling novels although it probably makes more sense to Christians.

A good sequel to the first. I liked the way Peretti tied in the characters from the first book. However, I prefer This Present Darkness simply because it was the first book I read like it. The Present Darkness is basically the same story as the first, just with different characters. And it's as LONG as the first, too. Still, I'd recommend it to Peretti fans, or anyone looking for a book that illustrates the power of prayer!
As a young girl I read this book. It made all the difference to me as I faced a decision to follow a path of new age religion or Christianity. Through this book I saw that the intrigue and depth of Christianity was more than I had originally thought. I was compelled to choose the path of Christianity largely because of this book. I also suspect the prayers of those who loved me had much to do wit it as well.
