In this first-rate thriller, a serial kidnapper known as the Piper, who has been quiescent for eight years, abducts the eight-year-old twin son of reporter Scott Fleetwood. Unlike the previous kidnappings, this one is more for revenge than money, in retaliation for Scott's having thwarted him in collecting the $2 million ransom for his last kidnapping and making him murder his young victim, something he had never resorted to before. He wants to make Scott suffer as much as possible.

Paying the Piper is an action-packed book that will leave any adrenaline reader begging for more. Scott Fleetwood is a reporter who built his career on a kidnapper named The Piper. While writing about the Piper's 7th kidnapping, Fleetwood is duped by an impersonator and he leads the FBI astray in his investigation. Could not put this book down. It was the first Simon Wood book I read and I thought all the way through, okay, we know who done it, blah blah blah. Ending. Suprise!

Excellent book, page turner and edge of the seat. Each time I thought I had the plot figured out Simon threw a curve. Could not wait see what happened next and then I was sad when I had finished the book.

This is a fine thriller, set in the SF Bay area, in which a serial kidnapper sets out to taunt a reporter and an FBI agent who angered him on a previous case. The Piper kidnaps one of the reporter's twin sons, setting off a chain of events. Good plotting, characters, dialogue, movement.

Do NOT start this book if you have any intentions of getting anything else done before you finish it! My favourite Simon Wood book to date. This thriller had my heart pounding, my blood boiling, and my thumb sore from hitting the page button. An exciting, electric, page-turning masterpiece, worth every second it takes to fly through it. From start to finish, this book has more twists and turns than a pretzel factory, and the ending will astound you. Well done Simon Wood!

This book was fast paced, gritty and a nail-bitter. I really enjoyed it. A crime reporter Scott Fleetwood has his child kidnapped because of a past error. FBI agent Tom Sheils, who blames Scott for his grave error is assigned to help Scott get his son back. Can these 2 work together? Can 2 grown men, put aside their differences for a good cause? If you want to know the answers to these questions you will just have to read the book.

I read tons of indie thrillers, and I can now say that Simon Wood's are among the absolute best. Paying the Piper is a lightning-fast, highly suspenseful read with many dramatic and shocking plot twists. It is also an extremely well-written book. Highly recommended.

Pretty good thriller about a kidnapper named the Piper who usually takes children for ransom, but now is out for revenge!

I'm not a big fan of the child-in-peril thrillers. That said, Simon Wood keeps that part within the respectable PG-13 bounds in Paying the Piper. We've been table-of-content mates in short fiction anthologies. I liked his sense of pace, nifty plot twists, and well-drawn characters, particularly the law enforcement types. His writing is forceful but smooth. In short, I spent several nights following his heroes and villains in print with enlivened interest, and I remained entertained until the sur

Very suspenseful and well written. I learned beneath Simon's sweet persona lies a very twisted individual... :-)
Definitely an author I'd read again!

A quite interesting kidnapping tale. For once, I had even guessed who "the bad one" was.
