Anne Bishop's national bestselling and critically acclaimed Black Jewels series has enthralled readers with its lavish blend of "the darkly macabre with spine-tingling emotional intensity, mesmerizing magic, lush sensuality, and exciting action." This book is a kind-of-but-not-really sequel to the trilogy in that it takes place after it, and I don't recommend reading it unless you've read the Black Jewels Trilogy. Obviously, it's not set on such an epic scale. The "plot" itself sounds rather silly: Surreal and her escort get trapped in a deadly(!) "spooky house" that was set up by a pompous writer who wants to get revenge on the SaDiablo family, and so, of course, Daemon and Lucivar have to do their "Evil Twin* Powers! Activate!" routine...more
Anne Bishop's skill with words rivals her characters' skill with magic: she weaves beautifully compelling characters and stories that enchant the mind and leave you wanting more.
And as those of you who have read my other reviews know, I rarely rave this much about an author, but Anne Bishop is my favorite by far.

Bishop tells us right up front in this book that "the big battle has been won, the big tale has been told," and that this is just a day-in-the-life-of sort of story. which is to say 2 very obvious things: 1)don't start here, 2)it's nowhere near as good as the books that *did* tell the big story.
but you knew that, thanks to the handy disclaimer up front. you don't particularly mind though (those of us who loved those previous entries, anyway), since Bishop is absolutely *killer* at characterizat...more

After hearing how the non-blood of the races think the Blood live Jaenelle decides to make a spooky house for some fun and scares. Her family is horrified that Jaenelle could make light of their lives and display a grotesque parody of what the landens think, and fear, the Blood are like. But she wears them down, after all, it is all in good fun. Except some one is playing for real. Landry Langston was a landen writer who is liked in both landen and Blood communities. As his popularity amongst th...more

Fans of Bishop's Dark Jewels Books
This is definitely not the book I'd start with if you're new to Anne Bishop or her Dark Jewels series. I'd recommend reading at least the opening trilogy first of Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows and Queen of the Darkness--and even the short novel "Kaeleer's Heart" included in the anthology Dreams Made Flesh.
I think this novel is more than just "okay." I did enjoy it, in the spirit of being able to spend some time with old friends, which is the way I've come to think of these character...more

I'm a bit disappointed. As much as I like the characters of the black jewel universe, in this book that just wasn't enough. In all honesty, the story was sort of lame. We have the three most powerful people in the realm, and they almost get defeated by a weasel. Really, the bad guy is a coward who is only just Blood. And the whole of it gets done in a spooky house. Which was not really interesting, it is a stupid setting to begin with, and after the first few (view spoiler)...more
Became hooked on this writer when I found a copy of Belladona in a thrift store. Webs is part of the Black Jewels collection developed by the author. It begins with invitations that are sent by Jaenelle Angelline, Witch and Queen, inviting her family members to a haunted house. The first to arrive is Surreal SaDiablo and her escort. For one reason or another the other members of the family do not receive their invitations in time. Surreal, her escort and several children become trapped in the ho...more

Takes place about a year after "The Black Jewels" trilogy (and "Dreams Made Flesh"). Reading other reviews, I'm glad I'm not the only one that felt a little "eh" *shrug* about the book.
It takes same characters and rich world, and has sort of a fast paced, semi-breezy adventure/mystery with them. I was really hoping this was going to be a cool stand alone - like "The Invisible Ring" - about Surreal, but, it really doesn't add anything to the world or make you care about the characters (unless yo...more

This book was ok. I read the Dark Jewels Trilogy and really enjoyed that. THis book is a sequel, but it lacks a little bit of the "teeth" that the trilogy had.
The Trilogy is a very dark and involved book with a very serious undertone. I found this book to be more light hearted, or even comical.
All the main characters are back, it has a story book ending, and it is very put-down-able. (didn't make me want to stay up all night reading)

This kind of felt like reading a fanfic to me (and don't get me wrong; that's not a criticism. I love fanfic.). There was a lot of focus on the relationships between the characters and dealing with emotional issues from the past. There was also a great deal of fanservice, as the author showed us all the ways that her characters are awesome. (Especially Lucivar, I would say, but then again, I'm completely biased.) Yeah, there was a plot, and it was important, but it wasn't on the level of the ori...more
The premise of this book was slightly ridiculous for a Black Jewels novel: Jaenelle and Marian begin creating a haunted house for fun, but before they can finish, someone else creates an evil version of their house and tries to trap the SaDiablo family inside it. Simultaneously, true to form, Bishop waxes melodramatic over the raw sensuality slash brutality of all her male characters in every other paragraph while Jaenelle somehow manages to be coldly majestic despite grumbling all the time.

I've you've made it through the original trilogy and are looking for more, this is an entertaining little story. Romantic, dark and melodramatic to the point of ridiculous (which is something I like at times - it's part of what escapist reading is all about). The villain is somewhat Mary Sue-ish (which was a nice twist, even though he was flat as most of her villains) and I encountered another haunted house plot device in a Tanya Huff book I read a few years ago, so I could've wished for somethi...more
So I read this series because one of my good friends says this is the best series and its her all time favorite: I'm starting to doubt her taste in books.
This whole book is crack -nothing but crack. The plot line is horrible, things/ideas are started and then just left alone or ended shoddily, and my god, the things Bishop writes!
I swear one more time I read "he sheathed himself inside her", "Mother Night", "the killing edge" etc. I'll chuck the book across the room.

It was fun to see the characters again and there was a good story about dealing with threat and danger. However, I did feel at points that too much of an effort was being made to show the brothers Daemon and Lucivar as domesticated. Yes, they are happily married dangerous bad boys but I felt that the author was trying a little too hard on that point.
This was a book I read for enjoyment and entertainment. I was entertained and did enjoy it. It was not, however, as good was some of the other books...more

While I enjoyed reading about the characters again, this (as well as Dreams Made Flesh) was very blank and filler to me. I can understand that after writing such an epic story, it can be hard to let of characters and the environment, but if you can't come up with another grand adventure for them, then let them go. Reading about a petty, inept writer out for revenge just made me go "Really?" in my head. This just seemed so far from the original story and writing style. I love the characters but I...more
As a follow up to the Black Jewels Trilogy and Dreams Made Flesh it had its high points and its not so high ones. Surreal has always been a favorite of mine, but in this one I wasn't as connected with her as I usually am.
Anything with Daemon and Jaenelle is wonderful! Seeing their relationship continue is the number one reason I keep coming back to Bishops work. The story is weak on plot, but the characters remain true. I wish Surreal had more of a potential love story, but there are more books...more

While i absolutely LOVE Bishop's Black Jewels series, Tangled Webs is definitely not one of the books I enjoy the most. I bought it on discount, just to complete my collection, and may have re-read it once...
Bishop created an amazing world full of interesting realms, cultures, creatures and people, that a sequel about a spooky house seems to be a let down from the possibilities that have been created for us.

It was a while since I read the last book in this series and at the beginning I had some problems to find my way back in the world of the Blood. But with the help of the author and the wonderful and detailed description of their world I remembered very fast all the character and their world. And well, I know again why I love this books. Agreed with a lot of others the new black jewel books aren't that good like the first three ones. But they are good, too in ther own way. Not that deadly and dar...more
Unlike the previous books this one doesn't have a complicated plot. It was actually quite silly and very used. Some crazy man thinks too much of himself and his arrogance and sense of self superiority lead him to take unreasonable revenge to the most powerful family in all realm. If you've read the first trilogy (not necessary to enjoy this particular book) you'll actually sympathize with the villain since it's painfully obvious what would happen to him once his own game caught up with him. Anne's Bishop's Black Jewels trilogy remains one of my fondest teen discoveries, despite the inherent flaws in the books. The spines are cracked, the covers worn--I often open one of the book at a random spot and start reading from there to the end. They're three of my comfort reads. I enjoyed The Invisible Ring a lot, and eagerly awaited the news books set in the same 'verse.
It went downhill from there, sadly. Bishop's new works set in the BJ universe clearly show how quickly she's had to write...more

This book was such a fun read!!
It contains most of the usual characters from the The Black Jewels Trilogy: Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows, Queen of the Darkness, and they're all being their usual fun-cool selves.
The story itself is more of 'a day in the life of' and the little troubles they encounter more than a big book with a big problem... but it's a lovely book nonetheless

I enjoyed this book. It was nice to see another story in this series. I still have some issues with how the main trilogy ended but I could mostly put them aside in this book. Some of the gender stuff also bothered me, as it always has. (The women having to civilize the savage male).

This is a good story for someone who's read the Black Jewels Trilogy and wants to see more of the characters going about their lives, however it's definitely not my favorite of the books set in this world. There's something lacking that I can't quite put my finger on other than to say it doesn't have the scope of the others in the series, or perhaps it's just that it seems a bit...too silly in some places? At times, it even seemed a bit forced to me, although I can't quite say why.

This is an enjoyable sequel to the Black Jewels trilogy, with a plot that reminded me of a fun but cheesy horror movie. When Surreal receives an invitation from Jaenelle Angelline to a spooky house, she and her escort Rainier reluctantly attend, but find themselves in a trap in which every use of Craft means one less means of escape. I adored the Black Jewels trilogy, despite Bishop's tendency to create cardboard villains and her somewhat troubling depiction of gender relations. The world-buildi...more

I am loving it so far.
It may not be as intense and emotionally-involving as Bishop's Black Jewels Trilogy, but the gang's all here! the sentiment is the same! No odd deviations from what we expect in a sequel to one of our favorites!
I wish men treated me like that...
