The New York Times bestselling novel is back

On a rainy Southern night, Jade Sperry endured a young woman's worst nightmare at the hands of three local hell-raisers. Robbed of her youthful ideals and at the center of scandal and tragedy, Jade ran as far and as fast as she could. But she never forgot the sleepy "company town" where every man, woman, and child was dependent o

This books was written 23 years ago. Can you tell? I certainly hope that the attitudes of Southern “gentlemen” have changed in 23 years. They come across as totally sexist and racist….. she portrays them really well. You have to hate them.

His bearded face never smiled … he was wearing clothes similar to those he had worn yesterday and the day before …. Old Levi’s, a faded top, boots and work gloves …. She was able to see that sweat had dampened his dense chest hair and and formed a triangle in

Breath of Scandal
was a sweeping tale of broken dreams, shattered hearts, and revenge! But it was also, a story of letting go, moving on and falling in love again. Very addictive stuff!

At the start, Jade Sperry’s story was heartbreaking! At age eighteen she had a bright future ahead: about to graduate high school and looking forward to attending college on a full scholarship with the love of her life by her side. Jade was on the cusp of living out all her dreams when something awful hap
Yet another great book from Sandra Brown!

I just have to say that this is the first book I have read by her that I wholeheartedly HATED one of the characters. Neal Patchett was such a bastard along with his two little puppets Lamar and Hutch.

Full review to come.
I have not been this emotionally moved by a story in a long time. Jade automatically appeals to me as a character because whilst painted as a popular and beautiful girl she is not the stereotype, in that she is in a deeply loving relationship with Gary, a poor farmer and is intelligent and driven. Seeing her journey as a character and her ability to move past her dark past and triumph against great adversity definitely moved me as a reader. Similarily Burke is equally traumatised by a tragic pas ...more
I have a personal attachment to the old-fashioned romances, and I’m not ashamed. Sandra Brown’s nineties novels are like my comfort food, some kind of literary chocolate, to be eaten when depressed. I’ve read and reread and rereread them all countless times, and I will read them again and again, I bet they won’t ever lose that string they have on me.

You see, I’m all grown up now, and I have new fancy tastes in literature, and an unhealthy and seemingly untreatable addiction to buying books, so I
I cannot believe this is my FIRST Sandra Brown book I have read! Why is that!

If this book is anything to go by, I need to get my finger out and read more of her books.

Here we have a young girl, Jade. She is so in love with her boyfriend. The thing is, her Mother doesn't approve of her choice, she wants her to marry someone more prominent in society and the home town they live, someone with prestige and money. The person is Neal. But she doesn't have feeling for him, in fact, she doesn't really l

This was the very first romance/suspense book I had ever read. And I loved it.
It made me want to continue reading romance and so I have almost all of Sandra's books now.
Some are better than others but I enjoy them all and this one started it all for me.
Now I write romance and am so grateful for ever finding this book.
This was an awesome story of first love, betrayal, hurt and, most importantly, vengeance. I love Jade. She is a strong woman and even at the tender age of fourteen I admired her and
Breath Of Scandal by Sandra Brown

This book was amazing. I couldn't put it down.

One spring night in the small town of Palmetto, South Carolina, a young girl's dream would be shattered forever. Raped and beaten by the three town hell-raisers, Jade Sperry's life would be irrevocably changed. Had she been weak, she would have stayed in the mud that her attacker left her at. But more compelling than her will to survive was the need to see her attackers punished for their crimes. But when her plea for
On sale for $2.49. Audible on sale too for $2.99. Thought I'd give this author a try. The romance develops slowly, but the story is very intense and the audio by Dick Hill is very good. I love his male voices, the female lead was a bit to breathy & soft...but all in all an excellent audio book.
Wow. Wow. Wow. I actually got this book by mistake. I had ordered a book by the same title by another author, which was a historical, which is my usual preference. I don't usually like contemporaries, but when I read the back cover, I was intrigued enough to read on. I loved it. (view spoiler) ...more
Sandra Brown is a somewhat new author to me, as I've only read one other of her books (French Silk) which was a pretty good mystery. So I guess shame on me for picking this one without doing my homework, and expecting more of the same.

Breath of Scandal is more of a drama. There are some elements of romance to it, but that's not really the focus. What is boils down to is a revenge story. The main character, Jade, is gang raped as a teenager in the 70's, and what follows is a blow by blow account
In 1976, Jade Sperry's innocence and hope for the future was taken away violently and tragically. 15 years later, she's returned to the small Southern town she called home so long ago. Ready to face the scandal her name was attached to, and even more so, ready for redemption and revenge against those who attempted to plan her future for her.

Will admit, this book was uncomfortable to read in some spots. Also had to remind myself that parts of this book was based in the 70's, in a small southern
The book flip-flops between two characters, Jade Sperry and Dylan Burke. Although you get mostly Jade's story in the beginning and there's no mention of Burke in the book blurb, so I was like "Who is this guy?" when his story began. Jade is raped by 3 high school classmates, all of which are sons of prominent men in the small town society. Basically, the incident is swept under the rug and Jade is then shunned from high school because she was with a really nice guy, Gary. As time goes on, howeve ...more
This book was not what i expected i to be at all. There was so much pain, it shows the worst in people, but also how if you do something bad the fate take care for the consequences.
It shows how even in the worst times you must continue to fight.

The book was good, but not very easy for reading - it was sad and disturbing and unfair in so much places. It shows how cruel people can be. What the money in some and the jealous in others can do to.

But i think that people can also can learn a lot from t
Sandra Brown’s Breath of Scandal was originally released in 1991, making it one of Brown’s earlier forays into the romantic suspense genre. The novel was re-released in 2013 and is now available as an ebook for the first time.

I came across Brown a decade or so ago, really only reading her (more recent) romantic suspense novels. I’m not a fan of (straight) romance or historical fiction but think Brown generally manages a good romance vs suspense balance.

Jade Sperry is almost finished high school

This is not an easy story and it's disturbing on several fronts. Jade Sperry could have let this act of violence against her shut her down for the rest of her life. Even though vengeance kindled the fire within her to a large degree, it still didn't kill the essence of who she was and had been. The same can be said for Dillon Burke as well, in spite of his retreat from life for several years. The tragedies he endured could have undone him as well. To reveal more about the circumstances of these ...more

Seriously, the first 1/3 or so of this book was really hard to listen to. I was so frustrated with the unfairness of how Jade was treated. This, however, is a sign of a good book. I was really into the story but by the last 1/3 of the book things had slowed down and became much more predictable and typical of a contemporary romance. I would say 4 stars for the beginning and 3 stars for the ending so averaging 3.5 stars.

I've always liked books written by Sandra Brown. Before all the trend for new adult and erotic romance erupted, romance novels were dominated by authors like her. Sandra Brown, Nora Roberts, etc. they were household names.

This book is really a great story about a girl who was victimized by three boys and lost her very first love in a tragic way and who grew up i
In Sandra Brown's Breath of Scandal, she turned up the heat in this steamy romantic suspense. On a rainy Saturday afternoon, Jade Sperry's life was changed forever from three hell-raisers. She haven't forgotten the sleepy town and the wealthy son from an established family and his two friends who had robbed her of her youth and ideals. Now she came back to exact revenge in Palmetto, South Carolina, to free herself of fear and the family that vowed to destroy her.
I read this book a million years ago and decided to read it again. It is a favorite of mine. I have read very few books more than once. I forgot a good portion of the plot and really enjoyed the story. Sandra Brown was my first romance writer. I don't read many. She does a great job of weaving a great story with romance. I am glad I read it again. Maybe in another 5-10 years I will pick it up again.
f you are in the mood for some old school romance with a side of revenge, you will love Breath of Scandal!! This book originally came out in 1991 and it definitely is true to that time period in terms of attitudes and behavior, especially in the south. Although things were a bit outdated, I couldn't help but love Jade Sperry -- she is a self-made woman, an amazing mother but she is also not over her past, which is completely understandable given what happened to her. The book really was more abo ...more
I realllllly wanted to love this you have no idea. The whole revenge story really wet my whistle but it felt like a chore to read.

Let's start with Jade.

I felt sorry for her truly to do with the rape and the aftermath but I think the whole Gary story line was a huge cop out, her reasoning for not telling him felt contrived and awkward and for the author to have him kill himself after painting him as a strong character really annoyed me. The whole story could have flowed better had Jade returned t
Altough its only the second book of Sandra Brown that i've read i have to say that her writing is very characteristic, even without knowing the author of the two books, "Breath of Scandal" and "Hello, Darkness", one could easily link them to each other.
Not only do both stories evolve quickly (which is exactly what's keeping the adrenaline-level so euphorically high), but the Characters are similar in what they represent, such as "The supportive good guy", "The independent heroine" or "The contro

My first from this author. I was prepared for an intriguing tale of mystery, suspense, revenge and maybe a little action. This novel delivered on all counts. Most pleasing. What I was NOT prepared for was the porn. Again, I hadn't recognized the author so I had no clue as to what type of writing to expect. Wow. And then wow again. And then again. And when you think the story is coming to an end, wow agaIn. The main female character is most clever, smart, human and experiences growth (pun intende ...more
