The Ugly Girlfriend (The Lonely Hearts #1)
LaToya Jenkins is the quintessential woman: smart, successful, grounded and determined. She only has one problem socially - she's overweight. As the "big one" of her girlfriends, she often faces rejection from the men of their social circle because of her size and/or her dark skin. And due to a painful past relationship, she gives up on love completely until, she takes on...more

This book was just okay to me. There were quite a few typos but nothing that was too major (waken instead of waking, accept instead of except there were a couple more but these were memorable to me). The story was nice, it just needed to be fleshed out a little more.. In one review someone said the whole book was a lead-up to the sex scene and had too much explicit sex, Id really like to know what book they were reading seeing as the H/h dont even have sex until way late in the story (around 73%...more
This is a lovely interracial romance novella about an African American woman who is full figured and mostly ignored by men because of it. The heroine is a size 14 which quite frankly is NOT full figured unless you are only 5 feet tall. I am a size 14 and at 5'6" I am quite slim. Society's idea of what full figured is is skewed. Anyway, this novella reflects how shallow society has become in choosing partners for love. A handsome and successful white male truly falls in love with the heroine. Her...more
I came across this book by accident, and I was glad I did. This book struck several personal cords with me. 1) It was about a black woman, 2) she was not your typical size 6; she was actually a size 14, and 3) she always felt like she did not fit in with her circle of friends. Because I was able to relate to LaToya on a personal level I was able to thoroughly enjoy the book.

I really liked this book. I read it on the kindle. Unlike a lot of the other books it did not start with the main characters jumping straight into bed with one another. Is started off slow and gradually picked up like a lot of relationships do. However the characters seemed to jump into the love part of the relationship rather fast and a lot of the story seemed unbelievable. The parts of the story that I really was fond of was how lead female really handled herself in the face of much adversity...more
Not the best interracial romance I've read. Solid plot, but the characters definitely need more fleshing out. I never got the feeling that Latoya and Mitch loved one another. One minute she's sticking to her guns about not wanting to be anyone's number 2, then she's cooking for him and his son, as one previous reviewer said, playing happy families. Where's the romance? Where is the progression? Where is the obstacle that was overcome? And who surrounds themselves with friends like Angela and Dea...more
I really enjoyed this one. It spoke to all my insecurites..being chubby, being underemployed, having crazy hot friends, thinking no one likes me.
But whaaaat? The fiction overlords see hope for even a wretch as I! In this story LaToya is a cleaning lady and although the title says ugly, but that's not really accurate. She probably cute but not in a Barbie kinda way.
Well she ends up cleaning for a recently divorced handsome Irish transplant, accent and all. He sees how awesome she is, and how cool...more

Outside of the few and far between syntax errors (probably could be fixed w/ an editor) I was really surprised that I enjoyed this book. I thought the character development of the heroine was done very well, especially between her and her 'girls' (Angela, I'm talking to you - you crazy racist so and so). I thought the development of LaToya and Mitch's relationship was steady and progressive. Not too much unnecessary drama there and I really enjoyed that, so thanks Ms. Nelson.

This is a very difficult novel to review. A more accurate rating would be somewhere between 2 1/2 to 3 stars.
It's a cute story, but it's so short that there isn't sufficient time to truly develop the characters or the plot. Of necessity, the hero and heroine fell in love too quickly. Also, many of the situations they encountered didn't ring true because there simply wasn't time to delve in to the various issues. This book would have been much better had it been a hundred pages longer. (Hey, ther...more

I' m really torn about a review for this book. It definitely wasn't one of the best interracial romance I've read but it had a ok plot. I wanted to like the book more than I actually did. I thought the characters needed more fleshing out. The relationship between the main characters is never fully developed. We are told that they become really good friends and then lovers but never really shone how their relationship progresses. I was thinking where is the progression to the romance? And by the...more
**Possible Spoilers** I enjoyed this little book, I thought it was cute and sweet, and of course anything dealing with an Irishman, accent to boot, is sure to catch my attention in the best of ways! I felt I could almost understand what our heroine, LaToya was dealing with, but I will never understand, how she got the title "the ugly girlfriend" and why the hell she didn't put a stop to it when it started. It really made me wonder what type of "friends" she had in the first place, because all my...more
I really enjoyed the story. I liked the fact that both characters seemed to have a lot of internal insecurities based upon life experiences but both seemed to help each other overcomes these obstacles. We get to understand why and how this happens to them and see the changes they make overtime. I like the idea that love blossoms slowly through this evolution. The weakness to this story is the numerous grammatical errors because such a great story deserved a much better proofing then it received....more
A great short book to read on a rainy day. The characters are are down to earth and wonderful. Ms. Nelson writes this book, it makes you see her,LaToya as beautiful as he, Mitch does and it makes you look at handsome men differently. This book cut on stereotypes too. As the reader I expected some things and was pleasantly surprised by others. Can't wait for the next book from Latrivia Nelson in this series. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next. Bravo Ms.Nelson
This was a short read to me I wish it was longer. I liked the fact that he loved her so much despite the way she viewed herself. By the way a size 14 is not as big as they make it seem. Depending on how tall you are. I just wanted to share that. LaToya friend Angela was one of the worst kind of people. I was so glad she told her off and ended that bad vibe. The relationship seemed very natural and unforced. He was a man that knew what he wanted and went after it. Very enjoyable...
This was a good story. I disagree with other reviews that stated that Latoya jumped from one extreme to another. She and Mitch spent time together every week, and when they went out or had dinner together, they spent hours just talking. We cannot have detailed info in a novella as we would in a novel, but the language alluded to having spent much time together before they had sex with one another. In the novellas the attention is in the wording. Close attention has to be paid in order for the st...more
I've lived with Spina Bifida for 27 years noe and it has definately made dating super difficult because I get judged on my outward appearance rather than my inside. This was such a positive short love story that gave me even more hope thwt my very own Mitch is out there eaiting for me eith open and accepting arms. Bravo to Latrivia Nelson!
Although I enjoyed the book, I found it too short and the concluding chapters a bit lacking in substance. It felt rushed. Also, if the author does not have an editor then please get one as it would make your work so much more enjoyable and if she does have an editor then perhaps it may be time for a change.
This was a very quick read. It was interesting and charming. If you are looking for a book with a plus size heroine this one will fit the bill. She owns her own business and he is Irish. Sweet. I like LN so if you are a fan of hers, you will enjoy this. I would lend for a weekned read. TTFN.
I've read other books by Ms. Nelson which I enjoyed so I was very interested in reading this one. I was quite happy when a fellow nook owner let me borrow it. As I started reading my interest waned...considerably, I'm afraid! The "big girl" who can't get a man solely because of her size is an overused and faulty plot. For the record a size 14, altho not a pixie, is still nowhere near fat. The cliches don't end there but that's the one that bugged me most. After the 50-60% mark things started to...more
