In Bed with a Highlander is the first in a new historical romance trilogy by Maya Banks. First off, the covers of this trilogy are amazing, not to mention they all feature the hottie that is Paul Marron. Cue swoons.

But there is more! Banks introduces three McCabe brothers who are simply delicious. In Bed with a Highlander is Ewan McCabe’s story. Ewan is the laird of his keep, where his brothers Alaric and Caelen are his second in command. While Ewan himself...more

The first book in Maya Banks' McCabe series, set in Medieval Scotland. Googling in the information provided in the novel I believe this story is set around the year 1134. The heroine, Mairin, is stolen from an abbey where she was hiding. Mairin escapes and ends up with hero, Ewan McCabe. While a bit spicy in places I did find it sweet. Some have compared this to Julie Garwood's historicals and I did find a similarity here and there. Mainly with the stubbornness of the heroine and the alphaness o...more

In Bed with a Highlander was a great surprise! I really enjoyed reading this sweet and sexy Highland romance.

Mairin has spent years at a nunnery because she is the illegitimate daughter of the former King of Scotland and has a generous dowry that would tempt men to force her into marriage. She is abducted from the nunnery by bad men loyal to Duncan Cameron, who tries to get her to marry him then beats her when she refuses to say her vows. Along the trip to Cameron lands, her k...more

I love the KGI series by Maya Banks, but when it came to reading her historicals I balked. In the past, I’ve found that when I like books of one genre by an author I don’t normally like books of other genres by the same author. So I put off reading this book. Even the description didn’t sway me. It just didn’t appeal.

However, Alyssa kept bugging me to read this book. She promised I would like it. Every time I was looking for a book to read she would beg me to read this. And every time I would p...more

'He caught her face between his hands and stared down into her eyes. "You are everything to me, Mairin. I can go without food. The keep can crumble. But I can’t live without you."'

I'm in love with Maya Banks' writing! Seriously. Her Highlanders are absolutely fantastic and I cannot even begin to describe just how much. *swoon* While I did love Never Seduce a Scot a bit more, mainly because this one didn't hook me quite as quickly, In Bed with a Highlander definitely didn't dis...more

Since I just went on a bit of a re-read binge of Julie Garwood historicals a few weeks ago, and it was only last week that I just re-read Ransom for the millionth time, it was only natural that I had some comparisons going in my head at the beginning. Fans of Garwood will see some similarities in this book and Ransom right off, but Banks' writing and story will move you past those and get you lost in the story.

Sometimes, when you're familiar with an author's work, it can be difficult not to let...more

After I read For Her Pleasure written by Maya Banks, I was afraid to read her other books. But then, this friend of mine, she recommended me to read this book and she assured me I would like it. So, yes indeed -- she was right because I did, I liked it. Loved it. By the way, this is my first medieval historical romance read!

I liked it when a story being told with fast-paced and easier to catch up. In this book, there was a lot of events happened made this premise more exciting, thrilling, and...more

Hmm.

Sometimes I liked Mairin's stubbornness. Sometimes I thought she was being difficult for the sake of being difficult. Sometimes I felt connected to her character. Sometimes I wondered what the fuck was going on in that mind of hers.

She did a lot of stuff that seemed... not stupid as such, but pointless. Like, there were times when I'd be wondering what on earth would have motivated her to do something, and I never found out for sure. It was almost l...more

I absolutely loved this book. I love how Mairin often defies Ewan, it absolutely cracks me up. I think the Laird has met his match. I love the old fashioned romance too and looking forward to reading more of the McCabe brothers.

Between 4 and 4.5 stars.

This was a great little gem of a book. I've never read anything from Maya Banks before, but I'll definitely be continuing with the McCabe Trilogy - those are some hot and sexy highland brothers!!

In this book we meet the eldest of the McCabe brothers, Ewan, laird of the McCabe clan, and Mairin, illegitimate daughter of the former Scottish king and heir to a politically important stronghold in the highlands. After escaping the dastardly, villainous Duncan Cameron who tries...more

What a great start to a highlander series! I’ll be honest, until now I instantly dismissed any Maya Banks book. After reading, (and not really liking), her erotic ménage book ‘Colters’ Woman’ a few years ago, I just knew she wasn’t an author for me. But, never say never, right? Right. Despite so many of my online friends repeatedly saying her new series are great, that they are nothing like her earlier erotica stuff, I still held off reading them. But I love a good steamy highland novel, so last...more

I loved this story. I am a fan of historical romances...specifically of the Highland variety. The H/h Ewan and Mairin was such a dynamic and interesting couple. And Crispen...what a sweetheart. I appreciated how Ewan and Mairin's relationship evolved. She provoked and testedhim at every turn but he was able to see her grit thus making him fall in love with her. He was considerate and protective of her in his gruff Highland way but I found it endearing.

The villain, Cameron? Loathed him! He was th...more

What a great start to a historical romance series! In Bed with a Highlander is a fast paced story that has the perfect blend of adventure and romance. Mairin is the illegitime child of the King. For her safety she has been hiding in a monastery for the past ten years until she is kidnapped by a mean horrible man who wants to marry her for her dowry and land right. She manages to escape and then is taken to safety where she meets Ewan McCabe, laird of the McCabe Clan. He offers to marry her in or...more

I don't know about you, but I'm starting to think that if you've read one highland romance you've read them all. I'm not knocking on Ms. Banks in particular, because she writes very well. There's just absolutely nothing new or special here. And I think I've read this same plotline in at least half a dozen romances: A pretty little Scottish heiress, hiding out from an evil chief/laird/lord who wants to force her into marriage to claim her lands, ends up in the hands of a rival, gruff yet good, ch...more

Review from my blog: http://everythingatoc.blogspot.com/20...

Honestly, even after reading a pretty promising synopsis, I don't know what took over me to jump on reading it right away. I even dropped the book I'm currently reading to see what it's all about. I actually don't know what I was in for, I only read couple of books dated in a historical setting or era. I guess, that was part of the pull, because it was different.

Okay, immediately, the story was in full throttle and I found myself flipp...more

4.5* What a great story! I loved this book! Ewan was a wonderful hero and his treatment of and love for Mairin just made my heart melt. There were so many "awwww" moments in this book. Mairin was delightful with the way almost every thought in her head she spoke out loud. She was a strong woman and very protective. I loved her strength and her protectiveness with Crispen. She was such a sweet mother to him.

Ewan, ah Ewan. How sweet could one man be? Even before he admitted his love for Mairin he...more

I cut my romance reading teeth on Julie Garwood so the first time I saw Maya Banks’ In Bed with a Highlander compared to her works, my interest was perked. When I saw it featured in Tantor’s coming soon list narrated by the much-praised Kirsten Potter, it became a must-listen upon its release.

As reviewed for Read Our Lips! Book Blog

Finally! I get to review a Highlander book for the blog, and what a good one! Maya Banks writing is as sensual, plot driven and alpha-male as ever. There may be no genre she can’t tackle. I love Highlander books because it tells of a people who considering the time that they lived in, did very well despite harsh conditions. They were self-sufficient, learned and determined. They believed in family, clan and bedsport (not necessarily in that order).

Mairin Stuart was hidden away for most of her life in an abbey, in disguise as a nun. She was discovered and taken away to Duncan Cameron, who wants the legacy promised to her as the illegitimate heir of former King Alexander of Scotland. On the way to Cameron, she protects a 7-year old boy from the wrath of her abductors and keeps him with her. After refusing to marry Cameron and paying the price for that, she escapes with the young boy and ends up in his father Ewan's laird. He then works to c...more

★★★✩✩ I guess I’m in the minority on this one. Lots of my GoodReads friends that I am so often in synch with loved this one. I couldn’t get past a couple of things. Still, I’m willing to give this author another try. I’ve just requested the next book in the series from the library instead of purchasing it this time. Lost interest at a crucial point and had to force myself to go back to it. (Really needed the “I” in the title for a challenge!) Never a good thing. So, consider that, and take my...more

4.5/5 - As much as I love Ewan and his brothers, Alaric and Caelen, Mairin stole the show. Being the illegitimate daughter of the King comes with a dowry that makes her so sought after, she hides out for most of her life in an abbey. When her identity is found out, she’s taken away from the only life she’s known and is about to be forced into a marriage she doesn’t want. A young boy, Crispen, has been separate from his people and when he attempts to steal a horse from the party holding Mairin, h...more

I surprised myself with how much I liked this book. I normally do not read historical romance novels and in the this Scottish Highland romance novels. But since reading this book, I am willing to give the genre another look. In Bed with a Highlander was not only steamy but I fell in love with the characters, rooting for the good guys and hissing at the bad guys. Ewan was a strong laird but was fair and kind. Mairin was a great heroin and I loved that she didn't cower in the face of danger. I rec...more

3 - 3,5 Stars - Okay!

One, for me, nice but not wonderful historical romance. I liked the story, with all the really wonderful Highlanders, but was still not quite caught. Could possibly be because I read the book in the sun at the hotel pool and was a little disturbed by all my chatter-happy relatives. Will continue with the series and hope for an even better experience with the next book.

AWESOME!!!

Was not expecting the twist at the end. Loved Mairan and Ewan. What is it about those Highlanders that make them so irresistible?

I really wanted to like this story, but just couldn't. The characters are likable for the most part. I liked Ewan and even the kid. The historical setting was interesting. That's about all this book has going for it, though. The author's wording and phrasing were just so odd that it drew me out of the story. I don't mean minor grammar errors that an editor missed. I mean that her sentence structure is just so very odd that I found myself staring at it and forgetting altogether that I was suppose...more

GREAT BOOK

What can I say? The plot is close to perfection. We have a very feisty heroine and an equally amazing hero.

Mairin was very loyal from start to finish. I loved her right away the moment she attached her self to Crispen. Ewan on the other hand, took more time to make me love him. He's just.. very gruff. I couldn't imagine his character being gentle... but then of course, he sort of changed for Mairin and it was a good thing to read about.

At first, I didn't think that they were compatibl...more

The tacky title alone should have prevented me from exposing myself to more "highland romance," but I'm editing photos from Scotland and it seemed appropriate to listen to a book set in Scotland. This was sufficiently uncomplicated so as not to distract me, but I think I pulled a muscle from all my eye-rolling. Which was pretty much every time the narrator said "nay" or "lass" or "sweeting" in her American-does-Scotland accent.

Mairin, our heroine, has a habit of announcing her innermost thoughts...more
