Sadly, this book is not just fiction masquerading as fact, it is also a case of plagiarism and intellectual theft.
The blurb tells us that it reveals “the ancient tradition of bee shamanism and its secret practices and teachings”. It also claims to be a personal “spiritual memoir” which “reveals for the first time” “the secret wisdom of this age-old tradition.”
If this is the case then why is it that many of the secret teachings of this ancient tradition are in fact lifted word-for-word from writi...more

When I started my beginner;s beekeeper class 1, this book was recommended to me to read.
If I wasn't interested in beekeeping before, I would be after reading this masterpiece of the
mystic's path through Nature's magical bees.
This book begins with a man who is a beginner on the path of a beekeeper. He, through the fates, comes across one of the very few Shaman Beekeeper. But he is so much more! He sees a bee mark this beginner on a special part of his body, which shows him that he is chosen by...more

This was recommende d and borrowed from the guy who runs the farmers market where I sell my eggs. One day we got talking about bee keeping and he suggested I read this book. He seems to be very into spirituality and other worldly topics in this book.
Not having a deep background knowledge of shamanism, I think some parts of this book were over my head. I was really uninterested after scanning the summary on the back and Tori Amos quote on the front cover. However, due to the vigor in which this w...more

Long before I knew there was controversy swirling around this book, I began to suspect it was fiction. An interesting read but fiction. The problem is that it presents itself as non-fiction. Why do I think it is fiction? A gut feeling based on a lifetime of critical reading -- something about the stock characters. Something about the total recall - in stunning detail - the character claims to have of what he describes as very deep trances induced by physically demanding initiation rites. Could t...more

I wanted to like this, and the opening pages of the book certainly have a compelling hook, but I'm just not up for this much purple prose right now.
Wow. Two thirds of the way through it becomes more than I expected. A real treat for those interested in the indigenous European/Britannia shamanic tradition as it was probably practiced pre-inquisition pre-Christian influence. Glad to know that it has been transmitted from one master to another in continuity. Beautiful.
I have some seriously weird "shamanic" books telling supposedly true stories of people's experiences that anyone skeptical by nature is going to be skeptical of. I believe some of them and others I just enjoy the storytelling and don't worry about how much is true. This one is way down on the believability scale. It is unintentionally funny in parts it is so far out. Anyway, I got a kick out of reading it but tend to think of it as totally made up. I could be wrong. :)
I was spoken so highly if this book that I guess my expectations were truly high. U need to be prepared for over the top narration a of what occurs to the character. I feel it's a spiritual book for someone who sees things from that perspective. As a bee keeper, I wasn't quite pulled in as others may have been. My live for bees is there -- my live for this writing was not.

Despite my initial misgivings (the Tori Amos cover blurb, the fruity magickal language), I enjoyed reading this story of a modern man's initiation into an ancient tradition. Scenes range from odd to fantastic, provoking my skeptical side. But it did make me wish a little that I were British, and reared on the purest source of fairy tales.
