I won this book from Goodreads' giveaways, so I was so excited about reading since the time I took it in my hand, since this is the first time I ever won a book. So finally almost 3 months later I got through the exams period and I picked it up!

The title comes from a movie term explaining how a scene suddenly changes from one scene to another that is totally unconnected. That is what happens in this book. The villain is a "poor little rich boy" who has no real life other than those movie characters that he emulates in his own life. The problem is the that the characters that he takes on are really bad characters.

A lot of classic movies are mentioned and Sandra Brown does her usual job to keeping you turning the pages.

My friend Linda gave me this book to read. I just started it but so far it is very interesting. I love reading Sandra Brown books.
I just loved this book with all it's twists and turns and how one minute you thought Julie had committed the murder and the next minute you thought Creighton had done it.I also loved the surprise ending. Bersama Derek Wheeler, Julie berusaha mengungkapkan dan membuktikan kecurigaannya. Semua aksi yang dilakukan Creighton selalu meniru pada adegan-adegan dalam film, terutama karyanya Hitchcock, dan hal ini ‘membantu memudahkan’ Julie dan Derek dalam memecahkan masalah ini. Namun demikian pendapat Julie dan Derek ini sulit untuk meyakinkan para polisi detektif kriminal bahwa Creighton ada dibalik semua peristiwa yang berkaitan dengan pembunuhan Paul Wheeler .

Kali ini Sandra Brown tidak membawa pembaca berlarut-larut menebak siapa yang membunuh Paul. Justru yang sulit adalah pengungkapan dan pembuktiannya. Karena sang dalang yang psikopat ini punya alibi yang sangat kuat, kreator yang sangat lihai, yang mampu membalik keadaan dari ‘tersangka’ menjadi ‘kambing hitam’. Sejumlah tokoh pendamping dalam cerita ini, memberi warna tersendiri dengan berbagai aksinya yang kadang membuat geli dan tergelak, tapi kadang membuat miris, yang pada akhirnya turut membantu menyelesaikan misteri ini.

Kejutan di akhir cerita yang mengungkap rahasia besar membuatku berdecak kagum pada kepiawaian Sandra Brown yang sejak awal telah menarik ulur emosi pembaca .
Plot cerita mengalir lancar dan cepat membawa pembaca ikut merasakan terror yang dihadapi Julie. Sedikit menganggu adalah trik yang digunakan Julie dalam mendekati Derek sewaktu penerbangan dari Paris ke AS.

Secara keseluruhan novel SB ini sangat menarik….romantiknya yang jadi ciri khas SB sudah pasti ada, suasana suspense tergali dengan baik membawa pembaca ikut hanyut dalam misteri ini.

I selected this book for #2 on my list because it had a movie theme which I thought was highly appropriate given my 50/50 challenge. Plus, I had the privilege of hearing Sandra Brown speak at DFWCon last year. I was so impressed by her that day that I rushed out of the auditorium, bought the book (yes, actual hard copy!) and stood in a really long line to have her autograph it. She is an amazing public speaker, and all around very nice person. If you get the chance, go meet her.

The story starts out with some seemingly non-related events. By the end, the events are not only wound so tightly around each other you can’t stir them with a stick, but the layer upon layer of subplot which comes together increases the tension to the point where I could not put the book down. I also couldn’t turn out the lights for several days, and walking alone to my car in the parking garage has my heart pounding.

First Line: “Creighton Wheeler stormed across the bluestone terrace, whipping off his sun visor and making a swipe at the sweat streaming down his face, then without breaking stride, angrily tossed the damp towel and visor onto a chaise. This better be damn important. I was about to break his serve.” As first lines go, it’s ok. There’s enough action to move me along.

To me, though, the first line of Chapter 3 is better: “It was decided midway into their second Bloody Mary. At least his mind was made up, and gauging from the signals she was sending, hers was, too. The conditions weren’t ideal. It would take some tricky maneuvering, but he happened to be extremely good at tricky maneuvers, and where there was a will…” Now isn’t THAT more intriguing? I found myself wishing the story started with chapter 3. Not just for the great opening line, but for the fact that chapter 1 and 2 confused me. They are in omniscient point of view, and the head hopping drove me insane. I nearly put the book down because of it. In Chapter 3 it stops the head hopping and sticks to a single character POV, and the story is much better for it. I’m not sure why the first two chapters are like that; it’s almost like they were added on as an after thought. If it bothers you, skip ahead to chapter 3. Don’t worry, any details you might miss will be presented again.

From there on out it’s a fast romp through a twisted murder mystery. The antagonist is cunning and beautifully evil. The protagonists are likable and make human mistakes that get them mired deeper into a mess they might not get out of. Just when you think you have the mystery figured out and are simply waiting for the cops to catch on, another shoe drops. Will they solve the crime before someone else dies? Read it, find out!

4 stars for great plot, awesome characters, good pace, and over all thrill factor. Minus 1 for clunky beginning. 4/5 stars!

Sandra Brown is one of those authors that I forget about but then end up reading another book and thinking, man, I've got to read more of her books!

This book is very well-written, you aren't left bored or skimming the pages trying to get to something more interesting. The two main character's chemistry leaps off the page, and the story, while employing classic story elements, includes some interesting twists that you don't see coming at all! I gave this 5 stars because this was the first book to completely amaze me with the ending...I was so not expecting THAT!!!!!! WOW....it was a little boring at parts but did keep me wondering what would happen next. I was actually surprised a few times...like all Sandra Browns I have read so far it was a well written roller coaster ride of emotion...I love when a book makes me laugh out loud and this one had me laughing a lot...I wanted to kill Creighton myself on many occasions that's for sure....more

Pelaku membuatnya terlihat seolah-olah itu adalah perampokan dan orang yang membangkang akan ditembaknya, tapi kenyataannya tidaklah begitu sederhana. Dan Julie Rutledge mati-matian mengatakan bahwa Creighton-lah pembunuhnya. Yang ia tak punya hanyalah bukti.

Derek Mitchell pertama kali bertemu Julie di pesawat. Tanpa mengetahui siapa dia dan apa kasus yang menimpanya, Derek menaruh hati pada Julie. Mereka saling bertegur sapa dan mulai perbincangan. Namun siapa yang menyangka kalau ternyata mereka lebih suka bersama di dalam kamar kecil pesawat daripada sekedar berbincang? :)

Sejak awal kita sudah diberitahu bahwa Creighton-lah orang jahatnya. Namun hanya kita (para pembaca), dan Julie Rutledge yang tahu bahwa dia-lah dalang dibalik kematian Paul. Tapi Derek, pengacara pembela yang awalnya dibayar untuk membela Creighton mulai menyangsikan kebenaran dari perkataan Creighton. Ia memiliki alibi yang kuat, tapi akhirnya Derek menolak membela Creighton dan berbalik membela Julie Rutledge.

Selain memang karena perlu dibela, semua bukti yang ditemukan polisi dan detektif mengarah kepada Julie. Tentunya semuanya sudah dipersiapkan secara matang oleh Creighton. Karena kegilaannya pada film, ia selalu menerapkan tindakannya sesuai dengan film yang ia tonton.

Buku ini memiliki banyak sekali rahasia. Penulis seakan melemparkan potongan-potongan puzzle dan mempersilahkan kita untuk memecahkan misteri itu. Aku sempat beberapa kali berspekulasi tentang satu dan dua hal, tapi tebakanku meleset. Seperti yang kubilang diawal, buku ini memiliki banyak rahasia dan untuk dapat memecahkan rahasia itu, kita harus membacanya hingga akhir cerita.

Dan oh, aku suka sekali dengan chemistry Derek dan Julie. Awalnya mereka tidak saling percaya, namun pada akhirnya mereka saling membela dan saling menguatkan satu sama lain. What a sweet couple and a great team!

What a great book! I can always count on Sandra Brown to write a book that keeps me guessing and my heart pounding! I loved the hero of the book, Derek Mitchell. He was very sexy (in my mind anyway, I pictured him as being played by Matthew McConaughey!) and I loved the way he would take charge of the situation. And I loved how smart he was!

This book seriously disappointed me. And it sure wasn't something I expected from Sandra Brown. Usually her books grip me because the plot is very well developed and exciting. Not in this one. In fact I had to force myself to conitinue this book. Somehow this book lost me during the middle part. Not because of the characters. They are what you expect in this genre.

Kemaniakan Creighton akan film, terutama film-film karya Alfred Hitchock memberi warna tersendiri yang memberi petunjuk kepada Julie dan Derek yang akhirnya bersatu untuk memecahkan misteri pembunuhan sang jutawan. Beberapa tokoh pendamping seperti biasanya tidak hanya muncul sambil lalu namun memberi warna tersendiri yang akhirnya turut membantu terselesaikannya kasus.

Beberapa kejutan di akhir cerita mampu membuatku berdecak kagum pada kemampuan menulis Sandra Brown yang sudah tidak diragukan lagi ini.

Alur cerita mengalir lancar dan bagaikan menonton film saat membacanya. Pertanda aku sangat menikmati buku ini. Kalaupun ada hal yang menggangguku adalah secuplik adegan di pesawat yang membuatku langsung mengernyit, “WTH?!” Namun adegan itu turut membangun karakter para tokoh dan alur cerita itu sendiri. Oh ya, kecerobohan Derek sehingga bisa diancam Creighton cukup membuatku ingin nabok si pengacara. Bisa-bisanya dia lalai dan secara terbuka mengunjungi Julie?!

Yang sangat tidak aku suka dari buku ini hanya satu: kover versi Indonesianya*hammer* Walau mungkin potongan slide film yang menghias kover dimaksudkan untuk memvisualkan hobi Creighton akan film, namun kesan tempelannya terasa sekali dan cukup menggangguku untuk buku sekeren ini.

Akan lebih baik jika slide filmnya digunakan sebagai aksen saja pada seperempat bidang seperti pada nama pengarang di atas atau di bagian bawah kiri/kanan saja dan tidak mendominasi kover*sigh* Kali ini aku lebih memilih kover versi #1 dan #3 saja sebagai kover yang kurasa lebih pas dari pada kover versi Indonesia-na. So far a great read. Murder mystery...not too gory.
Hot lawyer, strong female lead character. Good suspense.
It didnt happen as fast as some of the disappointing Judith MacNaught novels that went south, but this story really tanked. The problem was, the genre was not really romance. I would call this story a murder mystery, leaning towards horror. I am giving it 3 stars, because the story was good, even with the poor choice in charecter development and complete fail at romance.

By page 300, the main characters were still a mystery. They also had no real relationship with each other...very little dialog together. The worst weakness was the main male "romantic" lead. We just didnt get a chance to know him. The author spent way too much time inside the head of the villians. I felt very cozy with the murderer. This is not good. I noticed that Stephen King gave this novel a great comment on the cover. This should have been a red light for me, but I thought I'd plunge ahead, and stop if it got too graphic.
Some of the horror stuff was gratuitous descriptions of details of nasty things the villian did.
Not necessary to the story.....reminded me of JR Ward's Lessers.
I wrote a few pages of notes telling why the romance didnt work. I wont include those here. The sex was awful. Since there was almost zero development of a relationship, it felt forced. It was almost painful to read. I ended up hating the guy and this is a death stroke for me in a story.
It also had a very unssatisfying ending.
I think that there are authors out there that have written romance novels sucessfully for years, and for some reason, they choose to switch to contemporary murder mystery/horror type stories...
I dont know if this is due to editors pressuring them to do this to expand their readership base and sell more books, or whatever. The problem is, the readers who read romance novels are probably not going to go happily into another genre just because the author is familiar.
I have become very wary of newer books written by romance authors and always check the dates.
I still love many of Sandra Brown's romance novels, but they are the older ones.
Frankly, if I wanted to read murder/horror novels, I would probably be reading those by seasoned authors in THAT GENRE. Like Stephen King, for example. Next time, I will follow my instincts. (less)

This was the first of Sandra Brown's work that I read and it won't be the last. It could be classified either as a romance novel or as a murder mystery and it won't disappoint the reader either way. I picked up for the latter category and the investigation into who killed a rich business man in broad daylight had so many twists and turns it kept me guessing. What can I say? I was at an airport, facing 3 hours of flying and a couple of hours wait time in the Phoenix airport. Plus they have this new airport bookstore benefit, where you get 50% refund when you bring the book back. This is a horrible book. A wealthy man is murdered in an elevator with his supposed mistress Julie, and Derek, a defense attorney becomes involved with the elite family which includes the murdered man’s nephew. I love all of Sandra Brown's novels and always recommend them. She knows what a reader likes, never takes long in bringing in the action; creates likable characters, smart dialogue, a few twists and the villain in this one was quite a piece of work! The enjoyment with her work is in the reading, she likes to shock you with events when you least expect it and Brown typically picks up the pace significantly towards the end. I find myself racing through the pages as it coalesces to the conclusion....more

A thoroughly enjoyable read. As another reviewer has previuosly said, I often forget how good this author is. Now I want to go and backread her stories.

This was a great thriller. Not so much a mystery as the reader knows fairly early on who the badguy is. But, IMO, this does not detract from being engrossed in the story, as the bad guy is such an arrogant so-n-so that you just want to see how he gets what he deserves.

Awesome book! It's been awhile since I've read Sandra Brown, but I need to pick up a couple more of her books. This one was really really good!

First of all, I read this book in one sitting. Couldn't put it down! There were a couple nice twists within this fast moving mystery romance but on the whole, too much romantic passion and not enough passionate mystery. The killer is as annoying as he is evil and obviously guilty from the get go.
