This book is written around the letters home from an enlisted Union soldier during the Civil War. The letters are very poignant, and it's hard to believe they were written by a 19-year-old -- a very mature 19-year old with tremendous writing skills. The author has put the letters within context by describing the battlefield situation corresponding to the dates of the letters.
