Desperate not to be adopted by the mean, snobbish Mrs. Henley, Penny runs away from the orphanage where she's spent most of her life and is picked up by the Smith family. When the Great Depression leaves both Smith parents jobless, Penny suggests they move to a ghost town in the Rockies and live cheaply off the land, and they become modern-day pioneers.

Interesting take on the Great Depression, published in 1935 by an author who later became known for her multicultural literature. This is what you'd get if you combine Little Orphan Annie and Little House on the Prairie.
