Peter Guralnick wrote an amazing pair of books about Elvis, and a very thorough and fascinating one on Sam Cooke. I think it's due to the success of those works that this collection of essays on the blues was re-printed (along with similar collections on country and soul music that are in my to-read list). I didn't think I cared about Elvis, and the only blues record I own is a B.B. King greatest hits comp. It's a testament to Guralnick's writing that I find myself absorbed even when he's exp...more

This is one of Peter Guralnick's earliest books, written back when he was telling us about well-known names like Howlin' Wolf and obscure musicians like Deford Bailey. He has such a genuine love of American roots music that he can convince a Muddy Waters fan to give Hank Snow and Charlie Rich a listen ... and vice versa.
