Desmond and Garrick (Book 1) is a pretty entertaining novel. The characters have a voice that invites readers to laugh and enjoy their antics while the characters themselves are exaggerations but work really well with the story. The writing has some nuances that may not appeal to all readers but the tone and texture fit with the historical time period, and more so the feel of the story. Yet for all the many positives the book goes nowhere and leaves everything hanging with an ending that stops a...more

Garrick Mortimer is a scientifically minded gentleman. That is to say his mind is only geared to science. Yet only those who will bow down to scientific masters and pay their dues are ever accepted as the geniuses that they are and make a living locked in their labs. Garricks admits that he is a genius already, and as such, has no need for such horrible business as not studying what he wants to. Yet, he’s starving, and though he’s had several offers to tutor various youths throughout England, he...more
I've just read both volumes of Desmond and Garrick (This is one longish book that has been divided into two parts for publication purposes.)

I'm quite an admirer of Hayden Thorne's work---I've reviewed several of her books in the past---and while I think this story does have some problems, there's a lot to like about it as well. To begin with, there's the genre itself---this is an "alternate history" tale, and I've noted previously how much I like these stories. Here we have a 19th century Engla...more

I recently read on an authors’ thread people complaining that Young Adult novels were too crowded of vampires, werewolves and similar creatures; the same authors were swearing they would never write such a story, since, more or less, there would be no chance to make it literary. What a coincidence when, opening this novel by Hayden Thorne, I realized it was about a young teenager vampire! Well, I thought, how could the author manage to write something literary with such abused theme? Since I was...more
Read for m/m team bingo challenge.

Fun book, but incomplete on its own. I've started reading book 2. I'll rate this book after I finish the 2nd book in the series.

3.5 stars.
Another favorite read! I laughed so much in this book. Can't wait for the next one.

The Backlot Gay B...: Desmond and Garrick by Hayden Thorne 3 7 Apr 19, 2013 07:15PM
I’ve lived most of my life in the San Francisco Bay Area though I wasn’t born there (or, indeed, the USA). I’m married with no kids and three cats, am a cycling nut, and my day job involves artwork, crazy (read: incomprehensibly fun) coworkers who specialize in all kinds of media, and the occasional strange customer requests involving papier mache fish with sparkly scales.

I’m a writer...more
