Well, I'm definitely glad that I stuck it out through the first couple of books in this series, as it's just moving from strength to strength now. By this, the sixth book, the cast of characters is well developed and one that we've grown quite attached to. As such it was wonderful to have Murphy play such a prominent role in this one and took get a better look into her life. Harry's life also opened up some more and some very significant events took place. Thomas has always been a favorite,

I first heard of the Dresden Files when the Sci Fi Channel made a show about it. I watched all the episodes, and no, it wasn't the greatest show, but I was intrigued and hoped that it would come back a little cleaned up (I believe it's been canceled.) It turns out my parents are big fans of the books, so I thought I'd give them a try.
I should say that I read a couple of the books already, I think #1 and #3, both of which I thought were decent. Not great, but not bad either. This is n More...

Book Twenty-four
Blood Rites by Jim Butcher
"Hell's Bells" count: 19 [1:]
As far as I know, The Dresden Files is an open-ended series that Butcher will continue to write until he decides to end it, which is fine with me. He's set up a universe that has endless possibilities to it, from simple mysteries to humorous romps to soul-searing betrayal and heartache. Can't go wrong with all that, and if Butcher wants to just keep putting out Dresden books ever More...

Butcher's series is almost good enough that it doesn't count as a guilty pleasure. He outdoes himself with wisecracking in the opening pages, and seems to have reined in some excesses: our hero isn't made stupid by his uncontrolled emotions quite as often, although his knee-jerk so-called chivalry is still a bit much.
To get his next level-up as a writer, Butcher is gonna have to learn not to interrupt action sequences with lengthy explanatory exposition.

The war between the White Council and the Red Court of the vampires continued to rage (in fact, it seems to include all 3 courts of vampires) and Harry Dresden remains at the heart of it as well as maintaining his limited income doing what jobs he can as Chicago's only wizard in the yellow pages.
Harry's life remains excitingly complicated. The Black Court is in town, perhaps the most dangerous and magical of the vampires and his old enemy Mavra is gunning for him with her followers. He More...

This one started out slow but I actually ended up enjoying it as it picked up a decent pace mid-way through. Having had ups and downs with this series I was a bit wary when I was already fifty pages in and still wondering if anything was going to happen. I am glad I was pleasantly surprised. Since this book could almost be read as a stand alone and the fact that there are so many of them I won't be doing a recap.

I like Jim Butcher. He's creative and his stories are original, but there's just something holding me back from a 4-star rating. For one, this book, and i'm not kidding or over-exagerating, starts with Harry Dresden, wizard extraordinaire, saving a litter of puppies from a demon. Seriously? Saving puppies? It almost makes me think that the only reason was so that the author could gain cute points for Dresden by randomly having a little puppy peeking out of his trench coat pockets for most of the

I finally read this one and have ambivalent feelings about it.
This book is the introduction to the White Court of vampires and, also, a turning point in the series in several ways. Unfortunately, portions of it take place on the set of a porn film. Ew. Exactly why I was reluctant to read it in the first place.
That's right. Harry's sometimes ally Thomas Raith recruits Harry to find out why women on the set of a skin flick are dying under mysterious circumstances. Not only More...

This was my least favorite Dresden book yet.
That said, it was still awesome. Harry Dresden is fast becoming my favorite fictional character. His wisecracking sarcastic sense of humor hits a chord with me. I would love to know this guy in person.
In Blood Rites we meet a new edition to Harry's group of friends, Mouse. I look forward to seeing this adorable character develop. We also learn a VERY interesting tid-bit about Harry's family. The plot thickens. All action and mag More...

Okay, so... the first and second time we met Thomas (over the entire course of the Dresden Files series), I in NO WAY associated those two meetings with the same person. They flat out weren't. The character was written in such a dramatically different way as to make me do a double take when Thomas B referenced events that Thomas A had been involved in.
Now that Thomas is a major character settled into being just ONE character, I like him a whole lot more. I'm also beginning to like More...

I am now firmly convinced that Mr. Butcher has great plans for Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard. In "Blood Rites" the focus of the narrative has undergone a significant shift from its original focus on Harry barely managing to survive his encounters with a growing number of enemies to Harry and his friends learning what the costs of survival really are. The character developments are steady and interesting. Please notice the plural, "developments." Harry is n

Being the first ever Jim Butcher book I'd read, it makes me wonder why I had just read his work just now.
I had first known about "The Dresden Files" as a TV series shown one episode everyday in AXN Beyond some time ago. I had chanced upon its box set (its one and only season) while I was in Dubai and was disappointed to find out that it only had a handful of episodes.

This book has the most hillarious way to kill a vampire that I've read. As always, the plot has Dresden ducking danger from all directions and from a variety of foes. No heavy reading required. The Dresden Files will not reveal the Meaning of Life, but might serve as a small respite from such ponderings.
As I re-read the series, however, I am again struck with how many character's names begin with the letter M. We have Morgan, and Marcone. Murphy and Mickey Malone. Maggie. Molly. Mac More...

It was a pretty good romp in many ways, but I was highly ticked off my numerous logical flaws, especially around the middle of the book. Harry's staff is very important, but through sheer sloppiness, Butcher manages to have it in two places.
He also puts a manual car - one that has been a stick throughout the series & we just read was hard for Harry to drive due to a wounded leg - into 'drive' instead of first. A sentence or two later, he shifts into second.

Hands down one of my favourite installments of the entire series thus far. One of the major benefits of a long running series in my opinion are the side characters, as they continue to appear novel after novel they start to become as dear to us as the main characters are, such was the case for this novel.
Harry is hired by Thomas to investigate a series of deaths, and possible death curse over pornography director Aurturo Genosa, who coincidentally happens to be a major player in the White Court More...

Blood Rites – Dresden Files #6
It occurred to me while listening to this 6th book in the Dresden series, just how much *fun* these books are. They really are entertainment at its best, and even this far in, each book seems better than the last.
It’s been a year since the happenings of Death Masks, since Susan said good-bye. Harry seems to be handling things much better than the last time Susan left. We find him right in the middle of a case, running from the big bad with a b More...

After this book the publishing company did away with the numbering system which I disagree with. I enjoy reading the series in order. Relationships change. Characters grow. References to previous cases and stoylines make more sense.
As to this book in the Dresden series. It's not my favorite. Book 1 Storm Front was my favorite. I also enjoyed the previous book 5: Death Masks .

Another classic fast paced twists-and-turns plot from Butcher. There's nothing in it that will turn off established Dresden fans, but it's not a book I recommend a newcomer to the series pick up first due to a massively spoilery twist that drastically affects the main character. Usually I don't mind hearing spoilers, but this one I really regretted knowing about ahead of time.
This is probably one of the fastest paced Dresden books so far, and the humor is as strong as ever. I was imp More...

The best thing about this book is a dog.
That's not an imprecation on the quality of the book, which is hilarious, intense, surprising and even thoughtful by turns. Rather, it's an expression of this reader's pleasure at the portrayal throughout of a scrappy, supernatural puppy. It's very evident that Butcher is a dog owner and lover, and maybe I'm biased, but I read a little bit of Bichon in the furry tag-along's behavior.

This book (Blood Rites) and Proven Guilty are my favorites in the series. I read the first few books slowly, one at a time, but as time went on I began to enjoy them more and more. After this book, I couldn't stop until I had completely caught up on the series to date. Jim Butcher's writing style gets better with each book, and the story, which was already decent in book 1, gets very good. Dresden himself comes across a little whiny in early books but his characterization improves with each new

Haaa… The Dresden Files! Every time I open a new volume, I think « Maybe I’ll read a few pages before going to bed, just to get a general idea of the plot!» . And every single time I end up reading « just one more chapter » until 4 AM and showing up half dead for work on the next day.
Jim Butcher knows the trick to write the kind of books that you just can’t put down, that hooks you up and doesn’t let you go until your reach the last page or fall asleep with you glasses and all the lights More...

I love this series. Although each time I start another book in it, it takes me a few chapters to get going, I never regret picking it up. Harry is a character that you can’t help but relate to and love. Everyone has felt like an underdog at some point during their life and Harry’s constant position as underdog will garner sympathy with any reader, whether they enjoy the fantasy genre or not.

Great continuation of The Dresden Files series! These books truly have gotten better with each novel.
This one is one of my favorites so far for a few reasons. First off, Harry seems a little less whiny in this one. He's matured over the novels for sure. Also, Thomas (one of my favorite characters!) is featured prominently in this novel, as is Murphy who had been a bit neglected in previous novels. It was good to see her back in the action.

If you have grown to love the character of Harry Dresden as I have, then you must read Blood Rites. The sixth installment in the Dresden Files Series, Blood Rites peels back some of the mysterious layers of Harry's family background, including Harry's mother, Margaret LeFay. These revelations are woven into a fast-paced story which involves a series of freakish murders on the set of an adult film. Harry must go undercover to solve the case before the deadly entropy curse claims another life.
