Florian spune o poveste frumoasa si simpla, documentata, din cite imi dau seama, in plan istoric si condimentata cu putin realism magic, in plan pisicesc.
O carte de pus in raft, linga În intimitatea secolului 19. Daca n-as avea obsesia cu aranjatul cartilor pe edituri, desigur :)

This is a book that has three main aspects - the historical situation of the Romanian Principalities from their union in 1859, to Carol's accession in 1866 to his becoming King of Romania in 1881, the atmosphere of Bucharest (and to a lesser extent the rest of the country) at the times and the actual storyline of Joseph Strauss' life as he follows the prince from Germany to Romania to treat his teeth.
The book is superb on the first two but doesn't quite succeed on the third count though not read More...

The Days of the King by Filip Florian is a Romanian historical fiction that was published in translation in 2011. Joseph Strauss, a Prussian dentist and frequent client of the local brothel, follows a dragoon captain to Romania, where the captain will one day be crowned.
The brief description and the glorious cover art intrigued me. Unfortunately the "aggressively dense" writing (as described in the Literary Omnivore review) combined with reading an egalley made for a difficult and unpleasant rea More...

Someone recommended this book to me, and I wanted to love it, but it just didn't happen for me. It was so full of description and long sentences that I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to be paying attention to.
At one point, one of the characters is riding in a cart/carriage. He sees a family painting a house, and the book goes on to describe them in great detail -- down to the moles on the girl's back exposed when her shirt lifts when she raises her arm to paint -- and then they're gone More...

Reading like a long fairy tale, Florian's novel is translated from Romanian and, even with the helpful notes in the back, will have your reaching for your atlas and, if you have it, a book of maps of modern European wars (as a history minor with geeky friends, I do have one!). Or not -- you could just enjoy the story of a German dentist who follows a Dutch prince to Romania and sets up a life in Bucharest. From the description of the finance issues surrounding the building of the Romanian railro More...

It's hard to find Romanian books that are really good. Most of the time the stories are good but the writing is always so fairy tale like. I don't read much in Romanian, but it's a beautiful language so I'm hoping to find a copy of this in Romanian so I could read it.....

The Days of the King is a novel that’s mostly style—and if endless sentences, the lack of dialogue, and the general uncooked nature of it doesn’t appeal to you, you’re probably going to dislike it, just like me. A miss.

Foarte, foarte frumoasă! Foarte, foarte mult placută! :)

An amazing old story about a king, a cat and a dentist. The language is beautiful, like a magic voice.
