Here's my review system--I score on four categories and average them together for the number of stars. The four categories are: character development (are the characters deep and complex, plot (is it interesting), voice (is the narration smooth and engaging) and cliche level (is it predictable.)
Character development: 3 stars-- No surprises here...thriller stuff...not a ton of depth
Plot: 3 stars-- Okay...some suspense but no great twists
Voice: 5 stars-- Great--pleasant to read
Cliche level: 2 star...more

The nation's capital is buzzing with Memorial Day preparations. Despite the energy of the city, CIA operative Mitch Rapp senses trouble and the intelligence gathered is pointing to a major terrorist attack on the United States. Rapp wants to get to the sources and immediately leaves for Afghanistan, where he leads a Special Forces unit on a daring commando raid across the border into a remote Pakistani village. Their target: an Al Qaeda stronghold, once there, Rapp and his team discover plans fo...more
Vince Flynn's novels concerning the American Assassin Mitch Rapp are amongst my favorite books to read. I originally grabbed a Flynn novel off the new fiction book rack at my local library and immediately fell in love with author and his Mitch Rapp character which lead me to read every book in the Mitch Rapp series.

Vince Flynn has gone too far! At least that’s what the Dept of Energy thinks. The Department of Energy keeps track of our nuclear weapons. Memorial Day was too exacting in it’s details that the agency put the book on “security review” because they suspected that maybe Flynn’s sources may have told him some classified information. It was probably over something boring.

One day I was talking to one of my MN agents on the phone about Christmas. He said his wife had given him the latest book by a MN author. Being an avid reader myself, I asked who that might be and it was Vince Flynn. I told him that I hadn't heard of that author before and might see if the library had any of his books. Jim said that he didn't know if I would like it as it was a "man's" book. That was even more interesting. So I went home and later that evening I picked up the book I had started...more
This book was too formulaic for my tastes. All characters were nothing short of arrogant, ego-driven, "superstars". They were sickishly more attractive, more athletic, more intelligent, and more connected than 99.99% of the real world population. They were spending an impossible 26+ hours a day working yet still managed to have time to be in impeccable physical condition. Not a single character managed to say anything insightful nor did they possess the ability to be introspective about their ci...more
Another satisfying romp with one of my favorite 'cut through the red tape and get things done' characters; Mitch Rapp. This time Mitch is confronted with the threat of a nuclear device being detonated in the nation's capital. The regular Vince Flynn themes are present... Politicians are not experts in protecting our country; the Patriot act is a good thing; Islam is a peaceful religion except for the radical elements; and liberals are just getting in the way of truly protecting our great nation....more
Six books in, and Vince Flynn continues to mature with every book. "Memorial Day" is also the first one of the Mitch Rapp novels that didn't seem out of date to me. Given the 'current events' type of nature regarding the subject matter, it would be hard (in my opinion) to keep these story lines from seeming old-hat.
Overall, this is a fast paced read that holds your attention and I am looking forward to reading the next in the series.

The Background: Mitch Rapp, an American operative (a polite term for "assassin"), conducts a special operations raid on a Pakistani village with known ties to terrorist groups. Rapp gets more than what he bargained for when he discovers a hidden treasure trove of intelligence that suggests a huge terrorist plot is in the works. Rapp, a counter-terrorism expert, knows what measures need to be taken to avert a crisis. However, if radical Islamists weren't enough to handle, Rapp is also faced with...more
If I had been against the torturing of suspected and/or known terrorists before reading this book, I would not be now. It's a terrific thriller and totally relevant to the current times in which we live. It isn't always pretty and most of the time horrendously ugly and violent but there are times when extraordinary measures are appropriate for the sake of winning a war against an incredible evil.
24 in a book.
Like 24, if you try to take this book seriously, you can find plenty to critique. It's treatment of terrorism lacks nuance, and every character is a perfect physical specimen.
But if you're doing that, you're reading it wrong. The quote on the cover says "The king of high concept political intrigue". If you replace the "concept" with "energy" then it's right on. The story is kinetic.
Because I started this on the 6th book, I didn't have as much connection with "Mitch Rapp, Superagent"...more

Another Flynn novel that takes me back to my first reading of other greats like: The Day of the Jackal, The Dogs of War, Shibumi, The Ninja, The Brotherhood of the Rose and The Parsifal Mosaic.
"Memorial Day" was pretty fast-paced. This is my first Vince Flynn book, but probably won't be my last. Despite the "do-everything-in-your-power-even-if-it's-not-legal" attitude of the main character, Mitch Rapp, I had a lot of respect for him. It kind of reminded me of the colonel in "A Few Good Men", but Rapp got away with the most brutal things to protect the American people. The colonel didn't.

Vince Flynn writes political intrigue better than anyone I've read. His main character, Mitch Rapp is a no bullshit type of guy who I really like. Flynn's knowledge of his subject matter really impresses me as being realistic, but if it's made up, he sure fools me. I think his books are all great reads although this may have been my least favorite so far. Maybe I'm getting over dosed on the overall concept but I think in the case of Memorial Day, I missed the personal interactions with his wife...more

Although liberals and the ACLU would no doubt be horrified by the tactics of our protagonist, Mitch Rapp, I firmly believe that the general population of readers will find themselves cheering his methods of extracting information as he attempts to track down a group of terrorists attempting to cripple the infrastructure of the U. S. and kill hundreds of thousands by setting off an atomic device in Washington D.C. (No more plot details from here on).

Memorial Day is a standard "Mitch Rapp" book by Vince Flynn, which means I liked reading it. It involves Mitch trying to foil an attempt by foreign terrorists to do something particularly hideous (trying not to include spoilers)in a major city in America. I found it thoroughly escapist and most enjoyable.
Because I've read so many books by Vince Flynn using the character of "Mitch Rapp", I've come to expect more from the character, even if he is an escapism one-man army (which is exactly WHY I r...more

Book 5 in the Mitch Rapp series was a lot of fun, hearkening back to the non-stop action that made the first in the series so compelling. Sneaky terrorists! Nuclear devices! D.C. in jeopardy! (And the wife safe and sound for once... that was a nice change as the damsel-in-distress routine of the previous books has been played out too many times already.) Political squabbling! (Okay... maybe that wasn't as fun.) However, even though Rapp is a badass, he is also really (really!) arrogant and his c...more
About the weakest Rapp series book although that does not mean it is not entertaining. It typifies all Rapp novel plots in the most extreme way (which is entertaining while it lasts) and just that. The story offers nothing new. Not just the plot, but even the action scenes and torture events are run of the mill and predictable. More than in any other Rapp book, the characters here have no nuiances - the bad guys are without morals, smart in planning and most of the execution and complete idiots...more
In this anti-terrorism thriller, no-holds-barred CIA agent Mitch Rapp finds himself in a race against the clock – and his own beaurocratic government – to find and stop a terrorist nuclear strike at the heart of the country. Mitch is fighting against certain political appointees who don’t see things his way and can’t accept the means that are necessary to protect the country, and he certainly shows them who they’re messing with in fine style.

More fun with super-spy CIA assassin Mitch Rapp. In this episode, Al Queda terrorists have managed to sneak two nuclear weapons into the US and plan to detonate one in Washington, DC during the dedication of the WWII Memorial. The second detonation will target New York...but not if Mitch Rapp has his way!

4.5 stars for a thoroughly enjoyable read, but it isn't quite at 5-star level. It's really hard to pull off a plot of this scale in a single book. The higher the stakes, the more difficult it is to pull off believably, and the threat of nuclear annihilation is about as high as it gets. Flynn goes a good job, and this is probably the best book of the series up to this point. Mitch Rapp is badder and better than ever, but unfortunately we don't get to see much at all of his wife Anna in this book....more
A vanilla thriller that is engaging for fans of the genre, but unremarkable and predictable. Vince Flynn is a good storyteller and an able writer, but the characters were one-dimensional and largely uninteresting. The hero, Mitch Rapp, was perfect in every way: no flaws and nothing he did ever went wrong in even the slightest way. Neither believable nor interesting. Can't we have him blow it once in awhile, then recover from his mistake? Or be undermined by his own faults, only to pull himself u...more
I liked it! They remind me a little of the Tom Clancy books, which are usually entertaining, so this was right up my alley for a quick, entertaining, action book. Mitch Rapp comes to the rescue yet again, saving America from not one, but two, nuclear weapons. And along the way, he gets to kick some radical terrorist butt with little regard for the rules (which fits, because terrorist have no regard for humanity, let alone rules), which is appealing to my sense of patriotism.

I stumbled across the Mitch Rapp series a month or so ago. I was fortunate that the book I stumbled across was American Assasin and it was the flashback book that told the story of Mitch first entering government service. The library only had a few Vince Flynn's so I went with this one since it was the earliest in teh series that they had. I was a little disapointed that there were a few things that I learned by reading the books out of order, like Mitch's relationship status. Overall though I e...more
Mitch Rapp, the CIA uber-mensch, saves the US from a nuclear attack. A group of Arab terrorists tries to smuggle a bomb into the US to explode in Washington DC. Through his cunning, and his willingness to cut a few ethical and legal corners in his interrogation methods Rapp finds out about this plot, and thwarts it at the last minute. If it had been up to the effete Washington liberal democratic namby-pamby apologists, the city would have been annihilated in a fireball. It's a good thing we have...more
I found this book to an incredible book. This book is unique in how it is written. It strongly lacks sophistication in writing style, however the reader is not affected because of the superb plot. The character development is adequate and gives enough information for you to understand the book. The characters are not developed enough to seem like a friend but developed enough so you know them. Overall this book wins a five out of five from me for its complex but easy to follow plot. A terrorist...more
I would classify this as a Total Testosterone Novel, or TTN; much like the TTMs (movie) I like to watch once in awhile. Lots of action, little character and simple plot.
Let's see: "Islamic terrorists get their hands on a nuclear weapon and try to detonate it on U.S. soil". This plot is getting so old. It was a fresh idea when Tom Clancy wrote "The Sum of All Fears" in 1991 but has been used so much since then that it has become cliche. I was going to read David Hagberg's "Joshua's Hammer," but t...more

Suspenseful and action-packed.
On the positive side, this is a somewhat entertaining book - typical of books of the genre in terms of action, military and espionage edutainment, etc. Also, it is a very current book, concerning terrorism and fighting the bad guys from the middle east. For those with a right-leaning political bent (which I am), the book is certainly right-wing oriented. Devotees of O'Reilly or Limbaugh (both of whom endorsed the book) will generally support the political bent of th...more

This was a great race-against-time-to-stop-the-evil-terrorists book. I am reading these books in the order they were published and this time it felt like now that Flynn has taken the time to let us get to know Rapp in the previous books he could just get on with the action and let us sit back and enjoy the ride.
