Moody, atmospheric scenery; sly, dry-wit writing (except where Wade Wilson is concerned - then it's full-on insane, just as it should be). Remender plots his books like nobody's business - it's an impossible balance between teasing out just enough panels to see the progression of actions, and keeping the pace moving so quickly that there's not a spare panel to be had.

Remender also illustrates a mastery of the various personalities here that I didn't expect: Fantomex is somehow an aloof dandy and...more

As I wade deeper into the morass of modern X-books, I have less and less perspective on whether or not any of this matters, or makes sense, or if there's any point at all to my current spate of superhero engorgement.

And I don't really know if I care about those answers, either. I'm just saying.

So. If X-Men is Weird Superheroes Who Run a Superhero School in a World That Hates and Fears Etc, and X-Factor is X-Men: Government Agents, and Excalibur is Like That, But In England! and Alpha Flight is L...more

Reprints Wolverine: The Road to Hell #1 and Uncanny X-Force (1) #1-4 (November 2010-March 2010). Wolverine and Angel have taken the reigns of X-Force and still intend to use it to do the dirty work that the X-Men can’t and won’t do. Based out of Cavern-X, Wolverine and Angel have assembled Psylocke, Fantomex, and Deadpool to join in their mission. When Deadpool discovers Apocalypse has been reborn, X-Force heads to his base on the moon to stop him. Apocalypse is being protected by a whole new gr...more

On the surface, this book could have been a bad idea. Take Wolverine, already a member of two other teams, and put him together with Psylocke, Archangel, Fantomex, and Deadpool, as a new X-Force. None of these characters are "classic" X-Force, aside from maybe Deadpool who started as one of their enemies. Then send them out to do the black ops stuff the other X-teams can't do. I didn't think Betsy or Warren really sounded like black ops material, didn't care much for Fantomex in Grant Morrison's...more

Originally read on the Marvel Digital Comics Universe app on Marvel.com.

I’ve been reading a whole lot of back issue comics lately and among this pile included nearly the entire run of Uncanny X-Force. I’ve heard nothing by acclaim for this monthly title featuring a bunch of anti-heroes and their proactive stance against evil super-villains.

After reading more than thirty issues of comics, it is the opening arc that stands out. This is not best arc, which would come later in the middle of the run,...more

I loved the second two volumes of the 'black ops' X Force, in the lead up to and during the whole Second Coming arc, so I was worried when I saw the book was changing focus, characters and creative team. Well, the art isn't quite as good as some of the earlier stuff, and I still miss Domino, but outside of that, this book is flat out amazing.

A team made up of Wolverine, Archangel, Psylocke, Fantomax and Deadpool doesn't sound too inspiring on the face of it - but most of these characters have ne...more

Let me be clear the only reason this book has a four star rating from me is because Rick Remender has written better story arcs (Dark Angel Saga)following this one. The writing is top notch each character has clear motivations for why they want to be on X-force and these motivations change later on yet still remain prevalent throughout the series. Never have I read a story where the characters are so real that I begin to side with them. Who knew Wolverine could be so cerebral? Remender chooses a...more

I'm kind of obsessed right now with Uncanny X-Force.

Having recently read Volume 1 of The Dark Angel Saga, I found out that Uncanny X-Force is a relatively new title that only has four volumes: Apocalypse Solution, Death-lok Nation, and Dark Angel Saga Volumes 1 and 2. So after some cleaning, I took a bunch of books to Half-Price and made some money and then found Uncanny X-Force Volume 1 on the shelf for less than $10 and decided to purchase.

It did not disappoint. Something about this team reall...more

Everyone who raved to me about this book was right.

Smart, dark, lots of hardcore action with a smattering of sci-fi weirdness, all wired to emotionally resonant characters. First time in my life I've ever given a shit about Psylocke, largely because Jerome Opena draws her as a person first sexy Asian psychic ninja superhero second. Lots of warmth in her facial expressions.

I also like this this interpretation of Deadpool much better than the cartoonier manner we're usually presented with these...more

I started this whole story arc because of the Dark Angel Saga a bit later in the series, and it is already worth it! The artwork is well done, the characters are well developed, along with their relationships. Best of all is the action with casual hits at how well the team performs. In one instance, the newest member, Fantomex, points out an entire encounter with one of Apocalypse's Four Horsemen took less than a full minute. Later, this same approach is used to show how hard pressed the group s...more

This book is pretty interesting. It's like taking the 90's anti-heros and examining them from the inside out. The writer, Rick Remender, described this group as secretly taking care of the dirty work that the more pure "heros" would deem immoral, but he wanted each death to have meaning and impact the main characters.

What makes this book great is the comedy they all use to keep others at a distance. It balances out the darker aspects of the book. All these characters have been mentally screwed u...more

X-Men comics were the first books I read in the medium and its so good to see that there are still fantastic X-titles. Rick Remender’s Uncanny X-Force is a book that truthfully shouldn’t work. The concept isn’t new. The team is an collection, yet he pulls it off perfectly. He’s able to give fantastic emotional scenes between Betsy and Warren then switch to great fight scenes and imaginative origins for new villains. Jerome OPena’s art is beautiful except for an occasion unmasked face that is a l...more

The story was interesting--a rogue group of X-Men lead by Angel and Wolverine who take out villains before they take over the world, the villain in this arc is Apocalypse, reborn in the form of a young boy. Psylocke and Fantomex round out the cast. The team's HQ is in Sedona, Arizona, with some call backs to an old Sentinel hideout. Good characterization here, as Warren Worthington struggles with his "Archangel" persona that Psylocke struggles to keep in check. Beautiful artwork by Jerome Opena...more

I've been wanting to read more X-Men and I've heard a ton of good things about Uncanny X-Force so I picked it up and was pleased I did. Not only is this book easy for anyone to read and enjoy, but I have not been a fan of any of the "team" superhero comics I've read until this one. I like the characters, particularly Psylocke and Fantomex. The only exception is Deadpool but I can deal with him. The story is dark and huge in scope which is exactly what I would want from any kind of graphic novel....more

This is more of a compromise "liked it," because I actually don't think it was that good, but it had moments where it shone and the series definitely showed potential. The problem is that I spent most of the book not having any idea what the hell was going on or why it was going on. It also felt that Wolverine was slightly out of character. The most interesting part of the book was Apocalypse's "Final Horsemen," who are characters I would like to see again. Also, Deadpool. Deadpool is awesome an...more

In the wake of the epic Second Coming saga, Cyclops opted to disband his secret kill crew, mostly because his conscience got to him, but also partly because the rest of the X-Men found out about X-Force's existence and are directing dagger glares at him. Except that Wolverine isn't so quick to let go of this dark dream. He believes there's still a need for the squirmy things that only a black ops team can accomplish. Wolverine, pragmatic cuss, thinks that if not now, then soon, some extinction-l...more

This book found a way to make me enjoy many things I usually don't; X-men, overdone wise-cracking characters like Deadpool, and team action. The art is a dark and grainy, almost chiarroscuro-ish (sp? izzat a word??) but breaks into a tighter, more refined comic style for action. Very much fits the tone of the story. The character Fantomex, despite being a toned down Deadpool, has really got my interest...and Deadpool himself was unexpectedly hilarious and bearable in these issues. Apocalypse as...more

Rick Remender and frequent collaborator Jerome Opeña kick off this new X-Force series (now the Uncanny X-Force) with all guns blazing.

This collection starts off with a short story, The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life, which chronologically precedes issue #1 and does a great job of setting up the series, as well as explaining the need for an X-Force team, one which even Cyclops is unaware of.

Throughout the book, Remender makes great use of the heroes' powers (especially Fantomex, who is writt...more

I'm number one! I'm number one!

Just as with Jason Aaron, I have a love/hate relationship with Rick Remender. Half of his Punisher books are god-damned amazing and the other half are just trash (Frankencastle? Seriously?). But he's definitely managed to steal my heart with this new take in Uncanny X-Force.

Remender has added Deadpool and Fantomex to the roster to round off an insanely brilliant kill crew. And it's about damn time I saw some changes in the X books that I actually like. So with half...more

Gorgeous artwork, mind-blowing colors, and writing that packs more epicness into a 4 issue arc than a lot of "event" comics do in twice as many pages. I loved it... And this is coming from a guy who tends to shy away from the darker, "edgier" books, especially when it's a mainstream superhero comic, and especially especially when that book has an X in the title. Basically, Apocalypse Solution is everything I thought I didn't want from comics done so incredibly well that I don't even know who I a...more

I haven't bought any X-Men books since I got back into comics a few years ago but I got this one on the strong recommendation of the owner of the local comic shop. The fact that it's drawn by Eisner Award winning Filipino artist Jerome Opena was also a major factor for me. I really enjoyed Remender and Opena collaborating on Fear Agent so I was fairly confident that this book would be good.

And it was. I'm definitely on board on this one and I eagerly await Volume 2.

A collection of monthly issues, 'The Apocalypse Solution' is not meant to be entirely accessible to new readers. And while the story relies heavy on past events, fans of the X-men should be sufficiently entertained. The inclusion of Deadpool in X-Force as always provides substantial comic relief to the dark and violent nature of X-Force. This collection was enjoyably but undoubtedly would be enhanced by reading past collections/issues.

Got to be one of my favorite line-ups ever: Archangel, Psylocke, Deadpool, Fantomex, Wolverine. Yeah, okay, I'm not a huge Wolverine fan, but this is the team he was meant for.

I actually read the Dark Angel Saga before this, but that didn't ruin things for me. Loved this story, loved the way it was written, love each of the characters for being so THEM, loved the ending. Also: adore the art. Opena's Psylocke is unbeatable.

I think I liked the previous incarnation of X-Force better (Warpath? X-23?). Not really a Deadpool fan at all. It will be interesting to see what Fantomex is capable of. The story and art weren't always as clear as I expect from a comic in this one. Some of it was just a bit too far out (like Deadpool feeding parts of himself to Archangel...eww, yuck). I liked the art from the previous books better, too.

Some of the nicest drawn, inked, and colored comics on the market today. The story is cool too, slightly diminished by the fact that this is the 50th time Apocalypse has been fought and defeated. Since he is all about the strongest surviving and all that he should simply kill himself next time some unknown force resurrects him.
