Vengeance by Kate Brian

The last book in the Private series, ended as much of the readers would've expected. Once again Reed Brennan found herself at the center of deceit and death. It seems as though someone doesn't want her to rebuild the Billings house and the plot to stop her will only cause more pain for the young student.

I still rate it 5 stars since it was really good, but I must admit that I was disappointed. I expected a better ending! Or maybe even an epilogue! What made me sort of angry, though, are 3 main things.
I got angry how they made Noelle's scar worthless. I mean, they made such a big deal out of it in the 1st book, and then all of a sudden 13 books later after not mentioning it, she throws it in there with a sentence. That sort of makes me angry. I got angry how they made Noelle's scar worthless. I mean, they made such a big deal out of it in the 1st book, and then all of a sudden 13 books later after not mentioning it, she throws it in there with a sentence. That sort of makes me angry. I mean, it's like she just threw it in there with a sentence and it was over. Ergh. I had been looking forward to hearing the story behind Noelle's scar, expecting it to be something big, but was it? Nope, fell off a horse or whatever, the end.
Another thing was how they basically COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT THE MAGIC. I mean, come on! The last book was over 200 pages talking ALL about it, and now all of a sudden it's just like "Oh yeah, Kiki practices it sometimes but that's really it. And Cheyenne still believes in the curse but that's all." Like really? That was a big deal in the last book, they can't just FORGET about it! Ugh. They turned the book into like a "magic world" type book and we all had to get accustomed to it, just for it to be forgotten in the next book, hardly ever mentioned and not used at all. It's a BIG DEAL, they can't just forget about it!
The last thing that really annoyed me was how, just like the magic, they forgot about the BLS. I mean, we don't even know who gave the book to Reed! We can have our suspicions, but they never stated it in the book! What the heck?! They just completely forgot about it all over again, just said oh we all forgave each other but Missy because of what happened in the last book so we all forgot about it. WHAT. THE. HECK.
Another thing that isn't big, is how Cheyenne is still alive. It's HIGHLY unlikely that anyone could do that, pay off tons of people for that. That was what another one of the books was ALL about, and Sabine and everything! So are they saying Sabine really isn't a crazy murderer, she was just paid to try and kill Reed and kill Cheyenne? How could they just THROW that in there randomly? I mean, I guess they sort of always said that there was a flash of blonde hair, but COME ON. They really had a lot more explaining to do.
Okay, so I lied, there is still one more huge thing that ticked me off. THEY COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT UPTON. Upton had told her he LOVED her and EVERYTHING, and she was basically falling in love for 2 books with him too, then all of a sudden she's back to Easton and it's Josh all over again. Don't get me wrong, I love Josh and they're meant to be, but she can't just FORGET about Upton. I was hoping he would show up and if he really loved Reed, he would try to win her back from Josh and maybe throw a fistfight in there or something, I mean they both "love" Reed! Instead, Reed is just like "Hey, I'm just gonna contact you when I need something okay?" 2 WHOLE BOOKS about Upton Giles, and he is completely forgotten in the last book. The LAST book! I was expecting him to be at Gage's party, or some huge surprise where they officially end their relationship at least if there wasn't a "who wants Reed more" fight, but he wasn't there! He wasn't even mentioned! Ughhhhh.
So, even though these things obviously made me mad, I still rate this book 5 stars. It was the last book of 14 books, well 16 if you include the Book of Spells and Last Christmas, and it wasn't bad at all. It kept me on my seat and everything. But honestly, I think that she should have added one more book, to have better closure. Maybe they could even put Josh and Reed engaged! And why would they end it her JUNIOR YEAR? She still has another year at Easton, we want to know if she gets into a good college and what happens between her and Noelle and everyone! Agh. As you can see, at lot of this book really made me mad, but I still have to rate it 5 stars. It feels wrong if I don't. I went through 13 books looking forward to this very last one, so it only sounds right if I rate it 5 stars.
All in all, it was an honor to read the Private series, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a great, on-the-edge-of-your-seat read.(less)

Shelves: books-i-own, pscychotic-bitch

When I first started reading this series in early April, I never expected it to end like this.

At first I thought it was just about a bunch of rich snobs who love to party. All they cared about was shoes and boyfriends, just like any other chick-lit YA novel.

Nooooo, I was so wrong. This was about everything from taking Vaca's in New York to murder. By the first word of Private, I was hooked. That's my story about the Private series and it pains me to see it go.

First of all, I'd like to say that the only reason this book gets 2 stars is because I liked the rest of the series.

Going into the book, I had no idea what to expect. The first novel, Private, was great and so were the other 7 books, but after that everything went downhill. Still, I decided to give the final book a chance. I was expecting a huge twist, and that's what I got. The thing is, it wasn't a good twist.

At the end of it all, I feel that the Private series deserves some credit. For the past year or so, they've provided me with my guilty pleasure YA soap-opera mash trashy chic lit fix. I need those. I must agree with the general consensus on this one: Vengeance is an underwhelming, surprisingly inconclusive conclusion to the lengthy Private series. As Reed plans to rebuild Billings, she is once again stalked and yet another character returns from the dead. I happen to love characters who come back from the dead; that's not the problem here, and neither is the identity of said non-corpse (but why couldn't it be Thomas?). I must agree with the general consensus on this one: Vengeance is an underwhelming, surprisingly inconclusive conclusion to the lengthy Private series. As Reed plans to rebuild Billings, she is once again stalked and yet another character returns from the dead. I happen to love characters who come back from the dead; that's not the problem here, and neither is the identity of said non-corpse (but why couldn't it be Thomas?). It's that the motives of Reed's antagonists are both meaningless and tied into well-worn issues already resolved in past books. Most problematic of all, the witchcraft plotline is dismissed with a nonchalant paragraph early on in the novel, after a tremendous amount of momentum was built up around the entire concept. So we were taken out of the "secular" world and into a world where supernatural phenomena were possible, just to be jerked back to semi-normalcy again - huh?

Moreover, we already know where Reed ends up in the future, thanks to the far superior Privilege finale Cruel Love (insanely fabulous - hey, that could have been a Privilege title!). Ariana is so much more threatening and fascinating than any of Reed's other foes that it feels anticlimactic to move from the Reed/Ariana showdown backwards to a middling Reed vs Crazy Alums (Again) affair.

I've never been a Josh fan, and there's too much time in Vengeance focused on his typical whining. I did highly enjoy the returns of Taylor and Kiran, and when the original quartet reunited it left me expecting a massive shocker climax and finale that never came; the stakes seemed raised by the "cast" assembled in this novel. I seriously anticipated an incredibly wacky, awesomely deranged denouement and all we get is a lukewarm face-off between enemies who were only ever half-worrying and the clearly quite capable Reed and her b.f.f.'s.

As an enthusiastically obsessed fan of the Private series, I always hold that any Private novel is better than no Private novel at all. So it was great that we got one more book, but a bit disappointing that such a crazy-sauce series ended with such uncharacteristic blandness.

By the way, what are we going to do with ourselves now that this series is over?! Here's hoping that Kate Brian/Kieran Scott has more series coming soon!

I loved this book so much!!!! I got hooked on this 14 book series about a year ago, and I couldn't wait for the final book to come out, Vengeance. This series by Kate Brian is very well written in my opinion. There is great voice and tone, as well as description! It is a mystery and has amazing cliffhangers! She knows someone is out to mess with her, once again. First there's the blocked texts, warning her of danger. Then theres her old enemies, missy and Paige Ryan, walking around campus with an agenda. Even josh is acting strange, and the past has taught Reed that nothing is ever innocent at Easton. Shes determined to get to the bottom of the latest mystery, but she and the other billings girls will NEVER see this one coming.

Now if you haven't read the book stop reading because here comes the spoilers.

I was surprisingly impressed with this book. I am a huge fan of this book series, but even I can admit that after book 9 things went a little downhill . First there was st Bart's and the random women reed had never met that decided to be lucky number 3 on the reed brennen hitman list. Things picked up at the revelation that reed and noelle were sisters, but then the witchcraft element came into it from nowhere, and it started to feel like Brian was running out of ideas.

With all that being said, I was determined to finish this series, despite the fact that going into 'vengeance', my expectations weren't very high. But Kate Brian did it, she ended private with the same mystery that It begun with, and she did it pretty well. Bringing back the original Easton crew was a great move, and Cheyenne's return was definatly a surprise, even though her back from the dead explanation was a little far fetched, even for private. I only wish there had been an epilogue, so we could have seen where the characters ended up. Maybe Brian was leaving room for a spin off, and I'm totally ready for that ;)(less)

Though this action-packed book could not be put down, it did drag on a bit. Kate Brian does a brilliant job of adding new surprises and crazy drama that most series' like this tend to overplay. This book was surprisingly good, after the fiasco previous 4 books had been, this one turned out be a surprise. After Billings was knocked down, Reed felt like she lost a part of herself. After all, Billings was the place she met Noelle and her other friends, and finally felt like she fit in. Reed sets out to re-build Billings. Newly rich after learning she and Noelle are sisters (and after the murder of Noelle and her father) Reed puts all her energy into re-building the dorm. With the big groundbreaking weekend ahead and hundreds of Billings alumni flying in for the occasion, Reed begins receiving mystery text messages (again) and quickly learns that not everyone is thrilled that Billings is being re-built.

This is it. The final book in the mysterious, chilling PRIVATE series that I’ve come to grow and love over the past two years. This was one of the first series I reviewed on Cover to Cover, after a recommendation from a book blogging friend. I quickly fell in love with the series and ran out to the bookstore each time a new book came out. While the last few books in the series have been a bit disappointing, I was still looking forward to this final installment.

Unfortunately, Reed grated on my nerves throughout the book. The quiet, nice girl from book one has completely morphed as the books went on into someone pretty unrecognizable, and not in a good way. Reed’s shift in popularity and attitude was certainly evident in some of the past books, but in VENGEANCE, I almost didn’t want to root for Reed anymore. Plus, I already knew Reed’s fate because of a strange chronological mix up…the final book in the PRIVILEGE series came out before this book, and chronologically, the PRIVILEGE series was a few years ahead, and Reed is alive…kind of took all of the suspicion out of reading VENGEANCE.

I’m also not a huge fan of Reed’s boyfriend Josh, and unfortunately, he is in this book quite a bit. He was pretty whiny and shady throughout the book, and I found myself wondering what had happened to him. I used to like him a lot when he and Reed first started dating several books back! In this book, I was actually kind of rooting for Reed to date Sawyer.

One of the best parts about VENGEANCE was the fact that Kiran and Taylor return, reuniting the original characters from the very first book (minus crazy Ariana, of course). It was nice to see these two characters return, and they definitely brought back memories of some of the first books in the series.

Remember the whole witch storyline that randomly popped up a few books back? I was not happy that this storyline was completely dismissed in this book. I thought it ended pretty abruptly after it was introduced (probably because it was so random and readers and reviewers were completely thrown through a loop) but in VENGEANCE, it was almost ignored. Even though I wasn’t a fan of the storyline to begin with, I was hoping I would get a more definitive conclusion about it in this final book.

Toward the end of this book, I was completely confused at some of the characters who re-entered the picture and tried to kill Reed. After 15 books, we are clearly introduced to many characters and one of the flaws about this is that it’s pretty easy to forget who’s who and why they hate Reed. Of course I knew Reed would get in trouble and face death once again, but at this point, the plot still felt a bit tired.

My favorite thing about this series and Kate Brian’s writing is how intense and scary the books get in just a matter of minutes. Even huddled under the warm blankets of my bed, I felt definite goosebumps and chills as I read. Kate Brian definitely knows how to write a mystery, that’s for sure.

Even though I didn’t absolutely love a lot of small things about this book, I still enjoyed reading it. It felt a little bit like the end of an era for me. After two years, 15 PRIVATE books and six PRIVILEGE books, I definitely felt a little emotional saying goodbye to Reed, Noelle, Ariana and Billings Academy. I can’t wait to see what Kate Brian comes up with next! Hopefully another juicy, mysterious series!(less)

As a very loyal fan and long-time admirer of this series, all I can say is... "Well, that's disappointing."

It's the final novel, it's supposed to be explosive, and I get that the twist was supposed to make our jaw drop or something, but it all just felt very contrived to me. Like a plot that wasn't meant to happen that way from the start and was just changed later, so the added details and explanations were scrambled at the last minute. Or how convenient it was that all the bad guys were rounded up in the end, even a merely harmless longtime rival. I'm willing to suspend my disbelief a lot with this series but I guess after fourteen books and the final one returning to the very first one's plot again I didn't feel so much that it was going full circle but rather crossing the last of that realistic line.

And you don't just add a huge element like witchcraft and then say "oh, by the way, forget it ever happened." Come on! Just because most people didn't like the magic factor doesn't mean you can just turn back to how it used to be and pretend it didn't happen. That was a big, big twist and I thought it was blasphemous to have it brushed off so completely in the final book. What about all those talks about Reed being super powerful because of her bloodline? Does it ever occur to her that she wouldn't need guns or anything to protect her ever again if she actually develops those powers?

They're already awakened anyway as proven by the previous book. Where did all the prophetic dreams go? She had one like every other night last book - why aren't they here when it's her own life that's in danger this time? And maybe she could've used her magical powers to escape her latest kidnapping/murder attempt rather than relying on conventional means. I mean, I'm as supportive toward girl power as the next person and I'm glad that she saved herself this time for once, but I still don't understand why she decided to abandon those powers.

Just extremely disappointed with the way this book went :((less)

Finally got around to this one! I actually pre-ordered it, and then it took me a year to actually read it. I'm not sure why, exactly. I think I had been reading this series for SO LONG that I kind of wanted to wait and hold out for a while, so I could keep thinking about it and theorizing how it would end. Now with a new Kate Brian book coming out soonish I figured I should give this one a go.

In a way I feel like this series could have ended sooner. How many people want to kill Reed, honestly?!...more

My review contains some spoilers from previous Private books, but NOT from Vengeance, assuming you have read every other book before it.

The end is not near, it's here! After 14 installments and 2 prequels, the Private series has come to an end.
