Swear (Swoon #2)

Nina Malkin (Goodreads Author)
A promise broken. A bond betrayed.
It's been six months since ghost-turned-golem Sinclair Youngblood Powers confessed his love, stole Dice's heart, and disappeared from Swoon, perhaps from existence. Despite the hurt, Dice has been moving steadily toward ordinary. Dreams of Sin still plague and pleasure her sleep, and the mark of Sin's love remains on her skin, still sore....more

I received my copy of Swear through Simon & Schuster Galley Grab. Now that we have this out of the way, I can do my thing. This isn't even worth my blog's time, so we have another Goodreads original.
This book is a hot mess of the worst kind. No, this entire series is a hot mess of the worst kind. I was not a fan of Swoon, but I decided to take a stab at Swear and see if it could get any better. If not, well, I would have more snark bait.

Three stars are for an actual plot and Malkin's spectacular writing. Her craft is clearly the product of some seriously deep-rooted talent. Nina, I salute you for your ability to write.
Two stars lopped off for some ridiculously backward relationship guilt. So Sin's allowed to fuck the entire town without repercussion, but when Dice kisses a guy after Sin's been gone for like a year, she's the devil herself? What is that? And Dice, you seem smart. Why in the heck are you accepting blame for this?...more

What the FUCK did I just read?
No, wait, I do know what I just read. It's called wish fulfilment fantasy, and there is a huge heap of it right here. I never thought that Halo and Hades would share the one-star shelf this year, but apparently, I was wrong.
Let's start with the good stuff. There is a plot.
Now that this is out of the way...

i absolutely love this writer's style. the flow is unbelievable!!!!! it definitely doesn't feel, nor read, like a 400+ page book.
i think the thing that helps the pace move swiftly are the partial alliterations. i say partial, because the author tends to do them in pairs, where by definition, an alliteration is 3 or more...
another thing i love is that the vocab is completely different from your standard YA novels. where it seems that most authors have a word list they choose from, i'm always find...more

It’s been six months since everything happened, six months since Sinclair Youngblood Powers disappeared. Dice misses Sin more than anything, but she’s afraid that he might actually be gone forever—from existence. Still, she tries to have a normal life, playing music with her friends and trying to connect with new ones, especially Tosh, her attractive new band made. But just when everything seems back to the plain and ordinary, strange things start happening again. Little snatches of melody, plan...more
I was actually plesantly suprised by this book...and by that I mean it sucked, but not as bad as the first book in the series. After finishing Swoon I said I would not continue this series, yet here I am still disappointed. I will start with the postives of this book because there are so little and it is easy to get them out of the way. It had an actual plotline (positive), but the actual plotline got lost in the mix of mindless Dice thoughts (negative). The whole point of the book is to find Cr...more
Much like Swoon, the story telling style is unusual, but so is the story itself. I really tried to get more involved in the characters in this book, but I felt the same sort of distance that I did with Swoon. That being said, I felt that Sin was a much more sympathetic character this time around and had an easier time wanting him to succeed. I enjoyed seeing Pen's character develop as a result of the things that happened in her life and I thought it added some depth to the story. One thing I fee...more

Technically this should be a two star book. I only gave it three stars because the book cover is so damn beautiful.
Nina Malkin's writing is, interesting. It's definitely different and while I can't quite pinpoint what it is exactly that makes it different, I did enjoy the writing style...for a while.

I will admit, I didn't read the first book in the series, but I don't think that would have made a difference (other than maybe not reading this one).
Dice has spent the last six months missing the boy who stole her heart. She's not sure where he is or if he's coming back, but at times she can still feel him...especially when she's throwing herself into music. She dreams about him and the blue bruise he left on the inside of her thigh is still a tender reminder of him. But the disappearance of he...more

This is the kind of book you really want to like, if only because the main character is so kickass. She's smart, she's sassy and she truly has a likable personality. She isn't the problem with this book. the problem undoubtably is in the pacing of the the plot and the weird, chunky writing that seems to break up the flow every time it gets started. The book crawls along. It makes itself hard to enjoy. And the characters suffer from it. I wish I could say that this book was at least a decent read...more
The summer before Dice and her friends go to college Crane goes missing. His brother believes that it has something to do with the house. Dice hesitates to get into anything magic or other-worldly after Sin’s disappearance. Marsh, Crane’s girlfriend, and Dice’s best friend soon convince Dice to look at all the options. Looking into things brings ghosts back, and a world of trouble for Dice.

This sequel was completely satisfying and I couldn't have asked for a better ending.
Dice is one of my favorite narrators ever (if not my favorite). She is sassy, strong, and smart. She knows what she wants and does what she has to to get it and that is hard to find in a lot of YA novels.
Nina Malkin is one heck of a writer. She has great sass and wittiness and I love every word!

Ever since Sin pledged his love to Dice and disappeared, Dice has been trying to keep herself busy with her music and band. But Sin's mark on her doesn't disappear with him, and so Dice dreams of Sin night after night. She knows he's back. What she doesn't know is where, why, or how. I love the first book. I think the first was actually better than this one, but this one was pretty good, too. Even though the story was droning and difficult to follow at times. But maybe that's just me. I thought a lot of parts in the story were unnecessary and/or confusing.
I agree with the other reviewers, the double standard between Dice and Sin was really annoying, and it always frustrates me when jealousy and possessiveness are mistaken for love. That being said, I didn...more

When I first read Swoon, the book that precedes Swear, Nina Malkin hadn't planned on writing a sequel. So when Swear was announced, I was eager and excited, and did a lot of fan girlish squeeing. :D I have to say that Swear definitely lived up to my expectations.
For the a good portion of the beginning, Sin isn't there physically, but his presence in Dice's life--and her dreams--is unmistakable. But Dice is also getting close to a boy named Tosh, a member of the band Bruise Blue that Dice is the...more

I cannot begin to describe how much I loved this book. Nina Malkin is such an amazing writer that you don't even have to like the subject of her work and you will still be enthralled by it. Going into this book, I was worried that I would be disappointed. I loved Swoon so much, and I wasn't sure if the sequel could ever be as good, especially since I had heard that it was very differeent from the first book. I was wrong. I seem to be rating books pretty low these days, at least compared to even six months ago. that's because my standards have changed. A 3 star book must be a book that I liked. A two star book is a book that I didn't like, but also didn't hate.
My thoughts on Swear can be summed up in one sentence: it just wasn't right for me.

So I'm sure most of you can see that I wasn't all that into the first book, Swoon. I wanted to be. I loved the cover. But there were parts that just made it a little hard to sink my teeth into.
Then there was Swear. Not only did I sink my teeth in, I took a HUGE bite and went back for seconds. Seriously this book blew the first one out of the water and I couldn't get enough. In fact I am hoping, praying to the gods at be, doing the rain dance...all in hopes that Nina Malkin will give us more. I...more

It’s been a while since I’ve read Swoon; I seem to remember loving that book, regardless of the not-so lovely reviews it’s gotten. When I picked up Swear, I knew I would have a hard time acclimating to the goings on post-Swoon. Well, hells bells. I think I just realized why Swoon had such adverse reactions from other readers.

Swear picks up where Swoon left off. Sin-less. Dice is part of a pant and almost diving head first into a new relationship. When strange things start happening at the Williams' place Dice and her powers are called upon. Duck's brother, Crane, is supposedly taken by the house. The smell of roses and the imminent return of Sin keeps haunting Dice. As soon as she kissed Tosh, one of her bandmates, Sin returns and their relationship or what it was is questioned. Dice knows she loves him and it deter...more

LOVED LOVED LOVED.
Every single character was more developed than Swoon.
Sin was absolutely sexy. Pen was annoying. Marsh was adorable. Dice was enchanting. Duck and Tosh were wonderful. And finally, the best one of them all
Antonia.
Holy crap! She was probably the most creepiest, wonderful creature to be born into this series. She had just the right amount of everything in her.
Overall rating is five stars. This book looks amazing next to Swoon on my "loved" shelf :D

I rarely ever rate books below three stars, but this one I had such trouble with.
There were double standards. Many reviewers have pointed out that when Sin came back he was angry at Dice for kissing Tosh. Really, Sin? And Dice just accepts that he's mad and that he'll eventually forgive her. What was she supposed to do if he was gone forever? Stay celibate? Nice, Sin. Nice.
There was the fact that the narrator, Dice, didn't speak like any recent high school grad that I've ever met. Mostly that...more

I absolutely adored Swear. Nina did such an amazing job with Swoon I was so excited but also a little scared to read Swear. I was afraid that it wouldn't live up to Swoon. I was thrilled to say that Swear is on a level of it's own.
Dice and Sin have been through so much and after Sin disappears on Dice she was heartbroken. Sin mysteriously reappears six months later but it isn't the heartfelt reunion that Dice was hoping for.

I loved the first book and the second didn't disappoint. At first when I first came across it I was surprised that there was a second book and was expecting it to seem unnecessary and ruin the first book. Instead, as I read along, it seemed to finally give an ending to the first book. I couldn't put it down and felt the main characters emotions as my own. I would definitely recommend this series to my friends.
It was really good. Very passionate, heartfelt in some points, hilarious in others, but all in all it ends like you want it to end. The romance and desire in this book is so powerful, it makes you look forward to when it will happen again because the main characters are broken apart from these forces. These forces protruding from deep beyond the grave. It was really a bittersweet ending to the romance of Dice and Sin. But I'm not sure if it is the end, nothing led to a third book.
I have mixed feelings for this sequel.
I was impressed, but unimpressed at the same time. The storyline was more solid and not all over the place like the first book "Swoon"...But i have to say it lacks the sexiness that Swoon has. I wasn't impressed because I expect more romance between Dice and Sin and the ending was so off and abrupt. I just wish there'd be more to the story/ending. =\

All I gotta say is one word: Sin. <3
The minute Barnes & Noble puts this book onto the shelves I 'swear'... ahh! I don't even know. I was so depressed when Swoon ended and Sin disappeared, and now he might be back! I emailed Nina Malkin and she said that the book should be coming out this summer :) I'm too happy!
