Burnout
by
Adrienne Maria Vrettos (Goodreads Author)
On the day after Halloween, Nan wakes up in a subway car. She is not dreaming. She doesn’t know where she’s been or what she’s done. She’s missing a whole day from her life. And she’s wearing skeleton makeup and a too-small Halloween costume that she doesn't remember putting on.
Nan is not supposed to wake up in places like this anymore. She’s different now, so far from th

First, I have to say the synopsis is a little weird. I don't really understand what they mean by 'walking ghost' but it kind of let on to way more freaky-deaky stuff that what actually happened in the book. That doesn't take away from the freaky-deaky stuff that did happen to Nan, but it's just... different. I don't know.

The Independent reading Book I read this quarter was called Burnout by Adrienne Maria Vrettos. I can relate this book to our book we read this year for my CE9 class called, Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson. These two book are similar because both the main characters are in a stage in their life that they feel lonely and don’t know how to handle themselves. Nan, the main character in Burnout has recently been having some drug and alcohol problems with her friend, Seemy. When Nan was a freshman in h...more

Advisory:
This book would probably be PG-13 by film industry standards. Possibly PG. Despite the subject matter (teenage substance abuse), there's almost nothing in this book to be concerned about. Basically a few curse words, the aforementioned underage drinking, and some allusions to sex (no actual sex scenes in the book).

Nan wakes up disoriented in a subway car, completely clueless as to what happened the night before or how she ended up where she is, in her current state. While she's been this confused and disoriented before, it's never been quite this bad. Slowly, as she goes about her day, trying to get to school, and then trying to get back in her family's New York City apartment, she starts piecing everything back together. It seems that everything can be traced to her friend Seemy. As she starts rememberin...more

I received this ARC through Around The World ARC Tours. Here is my honest review:
I wasn't sure at the beginning of this novel if I would really get into it at all. It took me a couple days, but I read the last 75% in one sitting. It's a quick, short read, so it doesn't take too long. And you would think with its lack of pages that it wouldn't get too involved, but man! There's the whole mystery of what the heck happened to her the night before. And it goes into her past: her friendships...more

After attending rehab, Nan reunites with her best friend Seemy and they spend Halloween night getting into trouble. Even though Seemy is clearly bad news, Nan desperately wants some fun in her life and needs a best friend. Nan wakes up on a train in New York City and can't remember where she's been or what she's done. Vrettos traces the story of what Nan remembers and how she tries to piece together the events from the night.

This is a ghost story. I am the ghost.
Nan is not supposed to wake up in strange places anymore, without any memory of how she could have gotten herself into this mess again. She's not supposed to be drunk and drugged and confused like this -- not since Nanapocalypse, the event that left her in therapy, struggling to get clean from what her therapist calls a problem with making bad choices. She's supposed to be sober now... so, what happened?

I don't read much contemporary YA fiction. I'm not sure why. I guess part of me feels a story is always better with a science fiction element, or a zombie thrown in.
I wanted to read Burnout because it takes place on Halloween, or the day after- depending on whether or not you count flashbacks.
There are no supernatural elements in this story. Still, it is one of the spookiest, page turn-y novels I have read in years.

When Nan wakes up in a subway car in a too small pink plastic dress with a skeleton face and mutilated hair, she is terrified because she can remember what has happened to her. Even worse, she keeps randomly blacking out and having dizzy spells. She hopes she has not relapsed after she had done so well in the months since rehab, but she can't deny that she does not end up in this situation without being under some sort of influence. As Nan tries to piece together what happened to her, she flashe...more
First impressions: Oh, Nan. Poor, poor Nan. Twice in the opening chapters we see her waking up from being blackout drunk - once as a memory, and once to set the plot in motion in real time. Adrienne Maria Vrettos writes these so picture perfectly that I actually winced. Nan's predicament is unsettling and upsetting, which sets up nicely the tone for the entire book.
Lasting impressions: Although this was an interesting book, I'm not sure it has the punch to make this one everlasting for me.

This story is tense, raw, uncomfortable and should appeal to your typical angst-ridden teen.
Nan is a slightly confused, needy girl who forms an unhealthy friendship with a new girl she meets- an association which results in alcohol addiction, blackouts, family tension and a trip to rehab. And then things get really bad....

Burnout is the story of Nan, a teenage girl who wakes up the morning after Halloween with no recollection of the night before. Recommended by one of my teens at the library and so far removed from what I usually read that it's hard to judge.

Who am I? What did I do last night? Where am I? Am I dead? These were the questions the young lady in this story was constantly repeating to herself. Dealing with the pain in her life by drinking so much alchol that she became numb to her emotions and was able to drown out the screaming inside her heard. Peace was what she was looking for, but could only find it in the bottom of a drink and then came the memory loss. This was a pretty good book that looked into the life of a young person who has...more

I read Burnout during a readathon a few weeks ago and I cannot stop thinking about this book. It is terrifying. Seriously. In many ways. Nan has just woken up from a night of partying (which she doesn't do anymore or does she?) and she can't remember what happened. She's in a too small dress, her face is painted like a skeleton, which on the surface would seem humorous like a bad prank being played after passing out. But I know that's not the case. As I read I was afraid to find out what happene...more
Nicely done cautionary tale of teenage alcohol and drug use, set in NYC. The relative freedom of NYC teens allows them to engage in pretty risky behavior, but fortunately no one dies at the end. There is a contrast between Seemy's physical and almost perfect beauty and her drive to be self-destructive, while Nan's supposed doesn't-fit-the-ideal body belies her inner beauty and strength.

Nan has recently turned her life around. She went to rehab to stop drinking and has decided to put a real effort into school. So when she wakes up on s subway car wearing a Halloween costume and makeup and can't remember the last 24 hours she starts to freak out. She knows she wouldn't have started drinking again. She continues to black out for moments and realizes she may have been drugged. She has to find out what happened last night and she may be in more trouble than she realizes.
Process:
1.Pick up book with cool cover.
2.Let it sit for a bit.
3.Finally open it.
4.Discover it's a ghost story.
5.Decide to try and read it anyways.
6.Get completely disoriented and put off by two ghosts (or not, they talk in italics, but what does that prove?) making out and wait awhile for the author to explain things, but she doesn't give any context for her boring characters
7.Return to library

Confusing, raw, and emotional, this not a book for young children. The author does, however, capture the feel of a blackout. The reader is right there, trying to reconstruct the last twenty-four hours. The heroine, Nan, wakes up in a subway car wearing clothes she doesn’t recognize and not knowing how she got there. The beginning is slow and confusing, but the reader who trudges forward will be rewarded with a revealing look at the emotions and problems of teens.

I thought that this book was very good and it told a good story, classic but true. I got recomended this book by the libarian and she told me to try it out and tell her what i thought about it because i was the first one to check out the book and i came back with a good review, so i really do recomend this book to anyone who likes a fast read, but a good one.
This book is odd, we start out with a girl waking up on a subway with no idea how she got there or how she ended up in a costume and make-up. But slowly she starts to retrace her steps trying to figure out what happened to her, and where is her friend?
First let me say that this book is rather small and a quick read. Which can be a good thing depending on the book but this book felt too fast, like we where rushed through it. It's told in a series of flash-backs mixed with present day trying to f...more

It was very engaging and I felt like I was literally inside the character. I think this is a perfect story to show to teens to stay away from potential dangerous addictions. There is some self-discovery and character development. And it is very realistic because it doesn't put baby-happy stuff. It shows the face of people who deal with similar situations.
Nan wakes up in the subway, not sure if she is dead, asleep, or dreaming. She doesn't know how she got there or why she's dressed the way she is. She also doesn't know what has happened to her best friend.
Will appeal to reluctant readers, but is better for stronger readers as there is a lot of inference making involved plus many time/period transitions.

Short, not sweet, but really powerful. I was very captivated by the mystery and nightmare of the story. It did a great job illustrating every scene so i could understand the teenage substance abuse culture Im unfamiliar with and still connect to emotions like Nan's confusion, lonliness, and strong thirst for Seemy's friendship, that I do understand. If you liked "Speak" or "Every me, Every you", give this one a whirl.
Overall:
I had originally checked this book out by mistake. (I thought it was Shut Out by Kody Keplinger) It turned out to be a happy mistake. I really enjoyed Burnout. From the characters to the plot, I was fully entertained. I don’t understand why I haven’t heard about this book anywhere else. I found it to be an interesting and thrilling portrayal of a girl struggling to find the strength to look into her past. I give it 4.5/5 stars and recommend it to fans of contemporary fiction. I received this book as a goodreads giveaway. The story unfolds over the course of 24 hours. Nan, a teen looking for acceptance, love and friendship, becomes friends with Samantha (Seemy) and quickly spirals into a world of drinking. After hitting bottom and going through rehab, she wakes up on a subway completely blank as to how she got there. On her chest are the words "Help Me", her hair has been cut and she is wearing a too-small Halloween costume. What has she done? As Nan stumbles through...more
