I just finished doing a reread with my daughter with this one and realized I hadn't ever reviewed it the first time through.
This is a companion novel to It's Raining Cupcakes and features Sophie, Isabel's best friend. We get a good bit of Isabel as well and learn whether she won the cooking contest in NYC.
In this book Sophie has acquired an agent and is trying out for a commercial. But this commercial is for a company that could put Isabel's families cupcake shop out of business, so what does...more

Another Sweet Treat from Lisa Schroeder!
Twelve-year-old Sophie yearns to be an actress. When she’s offered the opportunity to appear in a television commercial, at first it seems like a dream come true. There’s just one problem––the commercial is for Beatrice’s Brownies, the successful chain that just might put the cupcake bakery owned by her friend Isabel’s family out of business! Can Sophie follow her dreams without losing her best friend?

I enjoyed It's Raining Cupcakes last year and was pleased to learn that Lisa Schroeder wrote a follow-up to that book entitled Sprinkles and Secrets. How could I resist another cute, delicious-looking book cover?
Sophie is a 12-year-old girl living in Willow, Oregon, with her parents and little brother Hayden. More than anything, she wants to be an actress. While her best friend Isabel excels at baking (her family owns the local bakery It's Raining Cupcakes), Sophie possesses talents that could t...more

Although with the same characters as It's Raining Cupcakes, this middle-grade novel also stands on its own. Sophie, who is 12 years old and has always wanted to be a model, gets called for an audition for a commercial! It is all very exciting, until she finds out that she would be promoting a sweet shop that is in direct competition with her best friend Isabel's mom's cupcake shop. Sophie is torn between her desire to pursue her dream and her loyalty to her best friend. She knows an audition doe...more
After reading "It's Raining Cupcakes"-- the girls in my class tried many of the recipes, and immediately searched online and found out there was a sequel. They begged me to buy it, I got it over Christmas, but before I could bring it to school, one of my students got a copy in Jakarta. I can't wait to hear what she thinks on Wednesday when school starts up.
I liked this one better than the first, primarily because I liked the Sophie's mom better than Isabel's. I love that Sophie makes some really...more

This is the first book in the series I have read. I think after reading this I will check out the others as well. This might be a good series to have in the classroom for some of the girls. You could probably introduce it to students who are reading on a 4th grade level and up. I like the fact recipes are included in this book. I could always use it as a tie to math or science because of it. In this tween drama, 12 year old Sophie has caught her big acting break, but what will it cost her. The a...more
I didn’t realize this was a companion novel to It's Raining Cupcakes but I don’t feel like a misunderstood anything not having read It’s Raining Cupcakes.
Anyway, the main character is Sophie and she wants to be an actress. She is thinking about this more because he best friend Isabel just entered a dessert contest &is away for the contest. Just when she gets back Sophie gets a call from an agency followed by a audition. Everything is great until she discovers it for a competitor for Isabel’...more

Sophie and Isabel are best friends, but they each have their own passion. Sophie's passion lies in acting; Isabel, baking.
Sophie has been offered an opportunity of a lifetime - to star in a national commercial. The company she would represent happens to be the rival to Isabel's family cupcake shop.
Sophie cannot bring herself to tell her best friend, but can she bring herself to give up such an opportunity? Can their friendship survive the big secret?

This companion to "It's Raining Cupcakes" is the story of Isabel's best friend, Sophie. Isabel is off on her trip to New York City for her baking competition, & Sophie is feeling kind of depressed & maybe a little jealous, but then something amazing happens: the mother of a friend from theater camp who happens to be a talent agent contacts Sophie about signing a contract & working to get her in front of a camera, possibly starting with commercials & working her way up to a real a...more
This is the sequel (I refuse to say "companion book" because it's clearly a sequel) to It's raining cupcakes. It's raining cupcakes was focusing on two BFFs (Isabelle and Sophie) and was narrated by Isabelle.
Here, the author had the clever idea to give voice to Sophie instead, so we hear everything from another point of view. I liked that a lot.
They also introduce a third friend (Lily) who should be the narrator in book 3 (bring it on!).

Imagine having a dream of becoming famous and now you have a chance to, that might hurt your friendship with your best friend. Well, that’s what happens in Sprinkles and Secrets by, Lisa Schroeder.
As I read this book I was astonished by how relatable it was. It made me feel like I was sharing the troubles of this young girl. This book is full of details and is a unique way to keep the story going form the first book, It’s Raining Cupcakes. The two books have different point of views, but they pi...more

In this sequel, once again Lisa Schroeder has captured tweener angst very well. Will my best friend hate me if I'm like totally selfish and think of my own needs before hers? The torment of twelve-year-old Sophie as she struggles valiantly to be okay with not being a self-sacrificing girl-doormat brought back the best and worst of seventh grade for me. Shudder.

marked it as to-read
I had read the first book to this series (It's Raining Cupcakes) over the summer, and I really enjoyed it. The first book really interested me, and was a very good story. I noticed on the back that it was part of a series, and have been meaning to read the rest. I have recently ordered this book, so I will get a chance to read it son!
I really enjoyed this book! I never wanted to put it down! It's about a girl who has a dream of being a famous actress, and gets a part in a commercial. She's really excited- until she finds out that the commercial is for the buisness that might make her best friend's cupcake shop have to close down...
It's probably more a 3.5. It's a cute book with a great message about friendship, forgiveness and loyalty to those you care about, but the way the characters spoke and some of the things they said were not like any 12 year olds I know...way more grown up sounding and sometimes even bordering on corny.
It was still a fun read, and my daughter really enjoyed it. She said she'd give it a 5, but she pretty much loves everything she reads and is very generous with her ratings :)

Sprinkles and Secrets is a wonderful book about friendship, loyalty and not least of all - chocolate! Twelve year old Sophie finds herself in a tough spot when she has to choose between making her dreams of becoming an actress come true or hurting her best friend's feelings. It's a wonderful book for young girls, or anyone who has ever had a friend and been afraid of losing them.

“What's your favorite movie?...that should be our question. When we don't know what to say. Movies are a safe topic. What's wrong with the standard 'how's it going?' because all you get is 'Okay' or 'Fine', and then what? You're back where you started. It's a useless question. Like anyone is going to tell you how it's really going.”
