In my opinion the author assesses various aspects of his life appropriately, but leaves some areas grossly underrepresented or wrongly assessed. For a concrete example of this, Capote's adolescent experiences of being the victim of coerced sex by boys, is playfully written off as relatively innocent forays (spellcheck) into sexuality. Since when is coerced sex relatively innocent? I guess he's thinking boys will be boys. His experiences with a pedophile teacher, I felt, were also grossly underp...more

if you are going to read one book on capote, this is it--please excuse the hackneyed phrase, but it will make you laugh and cry. I honestly feel like i understand truman and i wish i wouldve known him. quote by Truman Capote from Conversations with Capote by Lawrence Gorbel:
"This man Gerald Clarke who's writing this book about me--do you know him? He's one of the lead writers at Time magazine. He's really a very good writer. His book, it better be fantastic, because he's worked on it for ...more

Man this is a good bio but you have to be patient- it's over 800 pages. It's worth it- you really get a sense of who Truman Capote was, and the period during the Kansas murders is intense but is not the most intense period. In fact, I'd say that AFTER writing the masterpiece In Cold Blood it was more difficult for Truman to come down from that acclaim- hence, Answered Prayers. Also, Truman had some fascinating friends (Babe Paley, Kennedys, etc), most of whom he never spoke to again after he wro...more

recommends it for: people who have read In Cold Blood but not seen Capote, the movie! It's an in-between essential!
When I said In Cold Blood was my mom's favorite book, I forgot that there was actually a raging battle on her shelf of favorites between In Cold Blood and Capote. Obviously she is someone who likes ol' Truman a lot. Anyway, I agree with her. Capo

I greatly admire Gerald Clarke's biographies. He combines the art engrossing story-telling with the compelling insight of a competent psychologist. Capote comes alive and stays alive in this wonderful book about an endlessly fascinating and compulsively self-destructive man, who would not be denied himself at any cost.
By the way, Amazon is currently offering this book for $5.99.

I don't usually read biographies, but this one pulled me in. It's a big book, too! I'm impressed that I got all the way through it. That must be a testament to the writing.

Capote's life is just so interesting to begin with, and Gerald Clarke gives us a detailed look at it, capturing both Capote's triumphs and failures. What a life.

A definitive biography: how to meld research (in the most detailed forms) into something of a page turner (which is hard to do because Capote could be such an odious, self centered twit). I recall a former girlfrend reading portions out loud on a bad car trip, and our mutual amazement sure lowered the level of tension. ;-)

Dude had a pretty sad life. But I think he exacerbated it, especially towards the end. The best part of this book was the part about him writing In Cold Blood, which was the part that the movie was based on. Interesting. I love reading about authors that I love because it sheds a lot of light on what they write.

Long but informative if one is interested in Truman Capote. It was amazing the people that he knew, who were his friends, i.e. his Black and White Ball for Katherine Graham. Also the way he lived his life even back in the day when gay/lesbian people were not accepted and in hiding.

Engaging and easy to read, five hundred pages seemed like half that.

Without every having read a single of his novels, or seen him, (except without knowing it was him, in "Murder by Death"), Capote exerts his charm, intrigue, and caprice, once removed, in this book.

Gerald Clarke is a pretty good writer, and man, is this book full of great gossip. My favorite story is the one about how Robert Frost had Truman fired from The New Yorker. Anyway, if you like gossipy biographies, do pick this one up.

Perhaps like Capote's life, I had to stop reading as his focus and vitality crumbled after writing In Cold Blood. This biography is well written and very detailed. An excellent view of a compelling personality.

would have given it five stars but it was so damn long that at times it was too much of the same thing. still loved it and am so glad i read it, but that's a lot of capote to take in all at once.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Capote is an interesting person, and I'm also a Harper Lee fan. The book is lengthy, but I found it to be a page-turner just to see what Capote was up to next.

Best bio ever read! Makes you feel as though you are sitting in the same room as Capote getting a glimpse of his facinating life. Movie based on a small portion of this book. LONG BOOK.

I loved Gerald Clarke's biography and think it is one of the best biographies I have ever read. I enjoyed reading about Truman's early childhood in Alabama.
