Peace Werewolf! Peace Shifter!
Most books that I have read Werewolf and Shifter are one in the same. This book however, has a totally fascinating different set of rules. Werewolves are well, Werewolves, but they are dark. Shifters, however, related to the Werewolves in that their basic shape is a wolf, but they can take DNA and learn to shift into any other creature and are light. These set of rules were quite amazing at times, I just wish it were a little easier to catch on right at th...more

A Solid 4 Star Read
First off, I must say, that I love the title of this book. A Thread of Deepest Black is absolutely perfect for it.

I started reading this months ago, put it down, picked it up, several times. I hated it, could not force myself beyond the sixth chapter.
Why?
I could feel how powerful this story could be. How powerfully these characters affected me. And simply put, I did not trust the author.
I did not want to be disappointed by something with such sweet promise.
The shifter and werewolf lore, the world building, is not at all obvious at first. Not coming from these separate and unreliable sources. Trust Killian'...more

Lovers of great BDSM and Shifter stories
Goodreads M/M Romance 2011 Inaugural Members Choice Awards - Theme Enemies to Lovers 2nd
If you are a fan of shifter BDSM books I hope that you'll enjoy this one as much as I did. I really liked Finn's writing style. The intricate word that was unfolded before my eyes as the story progressed was delightful. I loved both the main characters. Both wicked funny at times, both true to their natures as both Dom/sub, were/shifter and men. I liked the glimpses into the politics of the were/shifter reali...more

I enjoyed the story, but not as much as I thought I would after reading the blurb and the opening chapter. Bonus points for a shifters story without the word 'mating' mentioned. The whole book's concept is very interesting – two kinds of shifters, mortal enemies from their very nature, turning not into simple animals, but something else [no more spoilers :)].

As an active dominant I enjoyed this book incredibly much. I became fully engulfed by the dark world of this novel and emotionally invested in the tale of love between Colton Dècarie and Killian Frost.
The portrayal of feelings, thoughts and sensations was so vivid that it pulled me right in. Dominance and submission were depicted so realistically, that I overlooked the single slip from realism in the physical aspect of BDSM - the whipping scene. I have a little different view of Colton. I think he thought he wanted to die but he was really looking for a way out. He could have died an honorable death at the hands of a werewolf any time simply by not fighting quite as hard. Also, he "jokingly" asks Killian if he can help him find another solution very early on - after the first night if I recall.
I enjoyed Killian's humor quite a bit. There was a bit too much sex for me, but it did add t...more

Hmmm... I found this tricky to rate. Although I make no secret of the fact that BDSM isn't my brand of kink, it wasn't the aspects of BDSM. I think what it was was that I didn't really bond with the main characters. Their motivation didn't quite click with me until fairly late in the book(which is odd since it's written from their perspective). And the big sex scene in the beginning, while pretty hot, didn't really help me understand them any better, which didn't exactly help the bonding process...more
As it has been written by other reviewers, this book will not please everyone, especially not lady-readers looking for a clone of the innumerable novellas starring "closeted boy who meets non closeted boy" or "sweet gay guy who falls for his supposedly straight best friend" or... you know what I mean.
Neither will it please those readers looking for conventional romanticism as they will find none, here.

PROS:
- The story seems quite original to me compared to other shapeshifter stories I’ve read. I was intrigued right off the bat by the specifics of Colton’s and Killian’s abilities, and it took me a while to figure out the differences between werewolves and shifters.

At first when I was reading the book I was really iffy about it. The first sex scene started early and lasted to about 30% and I wasn't really quite sure what was going to happen and where this book would take me and I wasn't really too fond of the characters as well.
But then near about 50% I really warmed up to the book. The action started, the book and characters really started grabbing me.

I can honestly say this is the first book I've ever given a 4 to that I felt was lacking in plot and world development! But what WAS in the book was really great! Colton and Killian were perfect together! The paranormal aspects were unique, consistent and thought provoking. The sex was Uber hot! I loved the wolves and the shifters (even though I'm not really sure I fully understood them as they were created in this world). Visually the author created some really stunning scenes! The bdsm aspects...more
Strangely, I really liked this book. I say strangely because there were things I think I should have had problems with, but I enjoyed it anyway. The world building was not extensive, and on a few occasions I thought I'd missed something as there were some references that I don't think were explained. Yet I got it. There was a lot of sex, but it wasn't repetitious and there was enough BDSM to keep it interesting. The plot was actually pretty simple and minimal, but when the characters moved into...more
I just finished A Thread of Deepest Black and have to say Wow! Honestly, it surprised the hell out of me. What a wonderful, twisted, dark, hauntingly beautiful story! I was not expecting something so rich and fascinating for a debut novel. It kept me on the edge of my seat and desperately wanting to know how it ended for the entire morning. Instead of finishing up the proposal I was supposed to be working on, instead of doing all of the stuff I meant to do today, I ended up sitting there reading...more
I never knew this book existed. However a quote from this book enticed me to read it. I'm glad I read that quote. If not, I think I would not have been enthusiastic enough to not read but to finish this story.

Somewhere in my mind a voice tells me this is a 4 stars book, that it has it faults and so, but I sooo don't care about that voice. I enjoyed this book almost irrationally, I was completely drawn by the world this book created from the first page, and just couldn't stop myself from reading. I perhaps wanted some more clarifications, but hey, I wanted more of pretty much everything, I wish the book had been longer, because it has everything necessary to keep the reader yearning for more.

Well, well! I can't believe that a book so...um...dark can be so sweet and romantic as well. I loved the combo. Oh, ho, and the hot-as-hell sex really pulled me in, too. The book was sometimes disturbing (not too much) sometimes gruesome, but mostly fascinating and endearing. An odd combination, but one I welcomed and enjoyed.

When I started reading the first page of A Thread of Deepest Black, I was immediately drawn into the lives of the two main characters. The intrigue, along with the suspense, also begins straight away as Finn draws informative pictures within dialogue. The events in this story were a little different for me, because rather than an intense feeling of lust as the giveaway for these two men to connect, there is, instead, the slow build of tension from many forms of emotion.

Reads kind of like fanfiction, but I don't care! Dubious consent, but it's all good! (We've already covered that dub con bothers me a LOT less in fantasy/ scifi situations.) Too many exclamation points and ridiculously delayed, kind of confusing worldbuilding but I refuse to be bothered by the things I usually mock!
Because it's all about story, connection, and character, and this book has it. I want Finn Marlowe to get an editor who's used to spec fic for his/her next novel so the worldbuilding...more

Werewolves, whips, and pretty men? Sign me up. I was so excited when I received this book through Goodreads First Reads.
This is a passionate story of two men- one a shifter, and one a werewolf- and the forbidden love they face. Wanting nothing more than an honorable death, Colton comes to a werewolf named Killian to ask for death. Considering it, Killian makes a negotiation- he'll consider it only if Colton spends one night in his bed. After that night, their fates cross paths, and they must wor...more

I'm just not sure what to make of this one. Some aspects I really liked, namely the BDSM, but the writing style was somewhat torturous for me. Now I'm not saying this wasn't a good book, there are a lot of people who really enjoyed it. I made it halfway through, maybe a little more than that, then I just gave up.
Nice story, but I didn't know when I started it that it was THAT MUCH erotica. Too much sex, not enough plot. Story could have been 1/3 the size it was without all the superfluous sex.
Alpha werewolf decides to toy with broken enemy. Broken enemy lets him in the hope that werewolf will kill him when through toying with him. Sex. Werewolf gets off on the thrill of breaking and dominating one of the few shifters who could kill him easily. Talks him into more sex. Werewolf forces shifter to release...more

Absolutely thrilling read!! This story was perfect! So deliciously cruel and sweet and red hot. So evil and pure. I can't even say it properly, how this book enticed me so completely. I loved it!
The only downside, if I have to name one, was the endless sex, but that was smoking hot too, so I can't really complain. ^^;

Sooooooo well written. The story was so poetic at times with the discriptions and narration. Its a beautiful story and more so because of the dark edges. This was no insta-love, but rather a gradual deep blooming love and respect between the main characters. And what made it unique was how matched they were in strength and power. The pretty shifter was no demure pushover, but a vicious killer who happened to be wrapped in a stunning package and the evil werewolf was a pacifist (for the most part...more

This turned out to be a fast paced, steamy read, but unfortunately at the beginning I was left a little let down that there was not enough explanation of the lore of this alternate reality. There was werewolves and shifters, but I didn't fully understand the rules for each, so I couldn't enjoy this as much as I would have liked.

Really liked it. I like the theme of the unwanted minority within a minority (in this case two minorities shifters and werewolves, though I admit except for Killians suspicions of what his mother would think and Colton's suspicions of the same no one actually says "ew two guys, yuck!" or anything of the like. The S/M scenes were done very well, more cerebral than a lot I've read. Only really problem I have is not all gay men have huge penis' and not all of us like them huge either but in every b...more
What an interesting take on the differences between werewolves and shifters. It took a bit of time for me to figure it out but it was a fun little treasure to help me want to read more in the book. I wouldn't have recommended that it was spelled out in the beginning of the book - it was nice to discover it as I was reading the first part of the book.

Killian Frost and Colton Decarie are mortal enemies. Killian is a werewolf and Colton a shapeshifter tasked with killing rogue werewolves. When Colton comes to Killian begging to be killed- Killian issues him a dare. Spend the night and submit to Killian and he would consider it. Colton who has never been with a man before reluctantly agrees. As their lust grows Killian realizes there is more to Coltons request than shifter craziness, plus he is getting attached to Colton. I was 60% into another novel (Angel: 1089) and went for a paragraph of this to disconnect my brain so to speak and did not go back to Angel, until I was done reading this. The only word I can describe this is intense and raw. Shifter/were novels are usually a hit or miss for me and this was most definitely a hit. I'm really looking forward for more stuff from this author.
