Peace Werewolf! Peace Shifter!

Most books that I have read Werewolf and Shifter are one in the same. This book however, has a totally fascinating different set of rules. Werewolves are well, Werewolves, but they are dark. A Solid 4 Star Read

First off, I must say, that I love the title of this book. A Thread of Deepest Black is absolutely perfect for it.

"When the power of the shift rips the human body apart and transforms it into its new shape, there lives a second, less than a second, a mere shimmer of time when the mind is without a home, no body to call its own. Existence is painless in there, nothing but formlessness beyond understanding. A secret place, it contains nothing but the essence of self, a lost self. In the fire of pain, Colton found a whisper of that place, its ghost, its echo, and from that echo he withdrew a thread of deepest black."

Secondly, BDSM is not something that I would normally choose to read, but it was completely necessary for the plot of this story. I, myself, cannot fully understand the need for D/s and flogging and pain in the usual contemporary novels, but like I just said, it worked for me in this paranormal story. So I didn't have any problems with that. Also, there is a lot of sex and I think the first sex scene took me around an hour to read; it was so long. But I truly felt that each sex scene furthered the story along since it was such an important aspect of the plot. My biggest problem with those scenes was the silly cliche dialogue.

Thirdly, my biggest problem with this book: I was confused...a lot! I think the differences between the shifters and werewolves could have been better explained. There are things I'm still confused about and I'm not sure if they were ever explain or if I just still could not understand them. Also, many times, I couldn't tell if it was Killian or Colton who was speaking and found myself rereading because I knew the dialogue was key to the scene. Approximately two thirds of the story is told in 3rd person from Killian's POV and the other third told from Colton's. I would have liked to have more from Colton's POV.

Finally, I really did like this book and would recommend it. I liked the paranormal parts even though I'm still confused and the sex was pretty hot. (less)

I started reading this months ago, put it down, picked it up, several times. I hated it, could not force myself beyond the sixth chapter.
Why?
I could feel how powerful this story could be. How powerfully these characters affected me. And simply put, I did not trust the author.
I did not want to be disappointed by something with such sweet promise.

The shifter and werewolf lore, the world building, is not at all obvious at first. Not coming from these separate and unreliable sources. Trust Killian'...more

I enjoyed the story, but not as much as I thought I would after reading the blurb and the opening chapter. Bonus points for a shifters story without the word 'mating' mentioned. As an active dominant I enjoyed this book incredibly much. I became fully engulfed by the dark world of this novel and emotionally invested in the tale of love between Colton Dècarie and Killian Frost.

The portrayal of feelings, thoughts and sensations was so vivid that it pulled me right in. I have a little different view of Colton. I think he thought he wanted to die but he was really looking for a way out. He could have died an honorable death at the hands of a werewolf any time simply by not fighting quite as hard. Hmmm... I found this tricky to rate. Although I make no secret of the fact that BDSM isn't my brand of kink, it wasn't the aspects of BDSM. I think what it was was that I didn't really bond with the main characters. Their motivation didn't quite click with me until fairly late in the book(which is odd since it's written from their perspective). And the big sex scene in the beginning, while pretty hot, didn't really help me understand them any better, which didn't exactly help the bonding process...more

In Ms. Marlowe's world werewolves have split into two subspecies: werewolves, who crave for human flesh and souls -a source of power for them- and shifters, the good guys, who defend humankind from the bad wolves hunting them and free the imprisoned souls.
Werewolves are clever, scheming and cruel while shifters are naive but much stronger. The two kinds have called a truce, living unconfortably side by side while people -the pure blood- remain unaware; shifters only hunt those werewolves who do not renounce human flesh.
This is why, when shifter Colton appears at his door, werewolf Killian is suspicious and far from happy.

The premise of this novel is excellent: it is a new, original setting which would have born more fleshing out.
Unfortunately both setting and plot are underdeveloped but this is the result of a choice and not of carelessness. Ms. Marlowe focuses on the budding relationship of Colton and Killian and creates two memorable characters.
Killian is not only strong, he is also smart and perceptive while Colton, despite all his power, is a man tormented by guilt and pain but not weak. They develop what seems an S/M relationship but is actually more than that, that is a spiritual journey toward understanding and maturity. Both have a potential which is dormant and help each other fulfilling it.
They achieve this through some of the hottest S/M scenes I have ever read, seasoned by a most unexpected ingredient: a quirky sense of humour. The story is told mainly from the point of view of Killian, the supposedly cruel, evil werewolf and I came to love his quips but I also loved the lucid honesty of Colton.

The truth is that this novel is bursting with romanticism but a romanticism which has to be decrypted through an apparent gloom of bondage and violence: sex scenes take up most of the book and they are harsh, difficult to stomach for the soft-hearted. Ms. Marlowe's world is a dark, dangerous place where it is hard to tell friend from foe, where everyone has his flaws and these flaws are not pretty to look at.

I enjoyed this read but have a few reservations: writing is overall neat and proficient but there are a few lines where it loses focus: just to make an example, there is a sex scene where euphemisms (e.g. essence) are used instead of the plain words (cum or semen) and they ring shallow and false. I would appreciate a revision to make the language even more terse and to the point: sex scenes, especially S/M ones, need be extremely polished not to cross the thin line that divides the arousing from the ridiculous.
A further reservation I have already mentioned: the setting is so interesting and the plot so rich with possibilities that I would have preferred a longer, more fulfilling story. (less)

PROS:
- The story seems quite original to me compared to other shapeshifter stories I’ve read. I was intrigued right off the bat by the specifics of Colton’s and Killian’s abilities, and it took me a while to figure out the differences between werewolves and shifters.
- There’s a lot of sex in the book, and most of it is rough (borderline violent, even), which is not something I’m typically fond of. However, the attraction between the two men is fierce and intense, and for once I didn’t mind reading the sex scenes that occur before the two characters have fallen in love. There’s a passionate connection right from the start; these are two men who clearly need what they can offer each other.
- This is one of the first BDSM books I’ve read in which the sub desires to be punished not because he thinks he’ll get off on it, but because he believes he truly deserves it. It’s incredibly well done, the weaving together of eroticism with true guilt and shame.
- Marlowe does a thorough job of describing action sequences. Sex scenes, fights, and the one hardcore BDSM scene all contain a lot of detail and stretch across many pages.
- I rarely think that the “enemies to lovers” storyline is convincing, but I think it is here. And I have to say: “You smell like burnt matches” (which is one of the first things Colton says to Killian)…is one of the best anti-pickup lines ever.

CONS:
- At times the writing is so spare (that is, light on context or lacking in transitions) that it’s a little hard to follow. More than once I had to go back and reread sections because I’d lost the character’s train of thought or the guys’ conversation had apparently skipped from one topic to another and left me behind. I think some of the crypticness is intentional, because it seems like Marlowe was trying to draw out the revelations about the characters’ abilities a little at a time. I certainly don’t have a problem with that, but I wanted the actual revelations to be a little more straightforward.
- The book contains a lot of echoes (phrases that are repeated over and over). They make the story sound almost conversational overall, but sometimes I found them a little too repetitive. Example: “Killian knew what Colton needed, oh yes he did. He needed to submit. Yes, that’s what Colton needed…”
- The setting is--as far as I could tell--contemporary, and the men’s speech is largely informal. But now and then something formal or archaic will slip into the dialogue (“ ‘Tis nothing, then”), which seemed at odds to me with the rest of the writing.

Overall comments: The only reason I gave this 4 stars is because of the (admittedly minor) writing issues; if I were rating only the romance, I’d give it 5. Overall I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I wouldn’t recommend it for the faint of heart, though: some of the action is pretty bloody, and a lot of the sex is “full of temper and violence,” as the book itself says at one point. There’s also one hardcore scene of (erotic) torture that goes further than many m/m books dare to.(less)

At first when I was reading the book I was really iffy about it. The first sex scene started early and lasted to about 30% and I wasn't really quite sure what was going to happen and where this book would take me and I wasn't really too fond of the characters as well.

Everything was so perfect. The title is perfect, the characters are so well drawn, they have their faults and virtues and they keep truth to themselves until the last page. Even the secondary characters, in their very brief appearances, are great (again, I wish there was more from them too, the Prince, Colton's mother, Killian´s cousin, everyone). The mental images this book gave me are stuck on my mind for good: the black threads, the red ribbon, the red eyes, two wolves hunting each other. Some quotes too, and many of them come to my mind right now.

“(...) And Colton,” he paused to briefly kiss him, “you are mine. But you must know that, just as surely as you are mine…” It was hard to admit the rest.
“What?”
“I am yours.”

Also, I don't think there was any unnecessary sex, or would change any of the intimate scenes for more plot, because I felt every time Colton and Killian were together, being talking, having sex or one whipping the other, there were so many emotions going on between them. Their time together is brief and limited, and the author (and the characters, obviously) make the most out of it. Every sex scene was relevant to the story and character development, pulling them together and making their relationship stronger. Even the bdsm was relevant, and thanks god it was just another element (an important one) of the story, not the whole story. I wouldn't cut any sex scenes, just maybe adding more details to the world, the conflict or the secondary characters. I was left, somehow, craving for an epilogue.

I was stunned when I learnt this is Finn Marlowe first book, and I expect so much more from her from now on. For now, my heart already misses Colton and Killian, they both are beautiful together, complement each other perfectly. Killian, being a wicked, possessive werewolf, is able to give generously and show such tenderness and caring, while Colton is able to keep his innocence and purity even while living in hell.Peace werewolf, peace shifter.(less)

Well, well! I can't believe that a book so...um...dark can be so sweet and romantic as well. I loved the combo. Oh, ho, and the hot-as-hell sex really pulled me in, too. The book was sometimes disturbing (not too much) sometimes gruesome, but mostly fascinating and endearing. An odd combination, but one I welcomed and enjoyed.

When I started reading the first page of A Thread of Deepest Black, I was immediately drawn into the lives of the two main characters. The intrigue, along with the suspense, also begins straight away as Finn draws informative pictures within dialogue. The events in this story were a little different for me, because rather than an intense feeling of lust as the giveaway for these two men to connect, there is, instead, the slow build of tension from many forms of emotion.

Reads kind of like fanfiction, but I don't care! Dubious consent, but it's all good! (We've already covered that dub con bothers me a LOT less in fantasy/ scifi situations.) Too many exclamation points and ridiculously delayed, kind of confusing worldbuilding but I refuse to be bothered by the things I usually mock!

Sooooooo well written. The story was so poetic at times with the discriptions and narration. Its a beautiful story and more so because of the dark edges. This was no insta-love, but rather a gradual deep blooming love and respect between the main characters. And what made it unique was how matched they were in strength and power. Really liked it. I like the theme of the unwanted minority within a minority (in this case two minorities shifters and werewolves, though I admit except for Killians suspicions of what his mother would think and Colton's suspicions of the same no one actually says "ew two guys, yuck!" or anything of the like. What an interesting take on the differences between werewolves and shifters. It took a bit of time for me to figure it out but it was a fun little treasure to help me want to read more in the book. I wouldn't have recommended that it was spelled out in the beginning of the book - it was nice to discover it as I was reading the first part of the book.

I was 60% into another novel (Angel: 1089) and went for a paragraph of this to disconnect my brain so to speak and did not go back to Angel, until I was done reading this. The only word I can describe this is intense and raw. Shifter/were novels are usually a hit or miss for me and this was most definitely a hit. I'm really looking forward for more stuff from this author.
