This book is about secret society and Da Vinci Code-like adventure, i.e. travelling to several countries to seek for some historical stuffs). The action is a bit better that DVC because it involves a unit called the Sigma Force (scientists with special ops capabilities and hi-tech gadgets (I think it's kinda corny, btw). The characters are....not memorable.

The story begins with a robbery of the bones of the three wise men (the ones visiting Jesus when he was born, also called as Magi) by the v...more

This is the first book by James Rollins that I was going to read, then I learned that there was a series, so I read the first book, "Sandstorm", first and then returned to this. You don't really HAVE to read the first two books in any order I think because there is little that is actually spoiled in Map of Bones, most of the previous book is referred to in passing and is more helpful to having a believable world than anything. Not that the world of Sigma Force is all that believeable, ...more

Quite decent but his fantasy runs amok on science: I found the book quite ok. Its written in a fast paced and entertaining style and one doesnt get bored anywhere. The story is sympathic and generally offers enough interesting features. The characters are described in a good way, though in depth character studies are not the strength of the author, nor does one miss that in this book however, given its an action driven story. <br />The author plays around with quite some scientific terms a...more

I wouldn't have read this one if I wasn't supposed to translate it.
Apparently it is widely compared to Dan Brown's The DaVinci Code. This book is perfect for a summer read if you're looking for something with an intense plot and not much else.
I was annoyed with the author's attempt to make the book more authentic by using sentences in foreign languages (German, Italian, French, Portuguese). If you do that, at least do it right. Apart from German which I don't speak, there were huge mistakes...more

Another exciting story by James Rollins. I've noticed though that he has a formula for writing that he follows pretty strictly. I think the reason I still like reading them is in spite of the similarities, all his stories also have a mystery element where you don't know where its going next. Its kind of funny too though how there is always a character who can figure out the mysteries in a short time. But that is also what makes it fun for me, it seems that the author is aware of the humor in thi...more

This was my second James Rollins book and I'm excited to read another. His novels read like "beach read" thrillers, but not those you'd feel embarrassed about toting around a public poolside. I'm a fan of fun mystery series like the ones written by Jeffrey Deaver and Harlan Coben, but with Rollins' books, I actually learn something. I also love his author's notes following the texts that recommend many of the sources he used for his stories. I don't imagine it's possible to read a ...more

70 RMB from Carrefour Gubei, Shanghai.

15/11/07 Will probably start this today. I had to buy it when I read on the back that it involved people trying to steal the magi's bones from a German cathedral. I've visited the Kölner Dom many times and after paying for the tour several times, I knew enough about the cathedral to do a pretty good job as tour guide for our visitors.

24/11/07 Read over the last two days. Enjoyed the book but thought it got a bit shaky towards the end which is o...more

Overall, this book was well written and the author's knowledge of the concepts and history integrated throughout the book is evident. Characters are well developed, but there was one major flaw that I found which affected my perception of Map of Bones. By the time I got to the end, I had no idea what the purpose of the whole adventure was. I couldn't remember what the main characters were looking for. I asked my friend, who recommended this book to me, about whether she knew, and she too couldn'...more

james rollins tries hard to present us a thriller in the combined genre of dan brown and clive cussler.the story itself is an amalgamation of novels written by dan brown, clive cussler and the movie national treasure into one.i would say he succeeds in presenting a very good thriller.the science thrown in with religion makes an interesting read.i would though give 5 stars for the research on part of the book.in the end its a 4 star book.entertaining with lots of science, religion and action

Well, guess what?
When I read the back of the book, i tought, this book is sure will rock! After I have finished read its early chapters, my feeling's unchangeable. Another fast-action-packed novel.
Then... for the rest of its chapters... a cliche novel? Good guys always loose first? Love between main characters? too-much-action-movie-like narrating? And how the book's ended? Another cliche?
But inspite of that, this novel is riches of contents (a combination of myths, religion and science a...more

why i recommend this book? imagine michael crichton and dan brown together? yup, its religious scince fiction. making d legend sounds scientific enough for us understand. it speaks about 3 magi bones (3 king or holy person that finds jesus and admit him as d son of God) that actually not bone at all. but the pure or single atom of gold. juz like carboplatin, d pure platinum for chemotherapy. james imagination is that this single atom affect ur body, and life. he mix it w legends and thriller. if...more

I quite enjoyed this book. It's like Da Vinci Code and Bourne novels combined. It starts dramatically with one of the Sigma Force members (Grayson Pierce) almost getting killed. Next, it jumps to a massacre in one of the cathedrals in Europe where a female lieutenant (Rachel Verona) leads the investigations. These two team up with a couple of other support team members and travel Europe to find out the reason for the killing spree in the church. Along the way, we discover several villains a...more

This is the first book I have read that equals the suspense and drama of DaVinci Code and other Dan Brown books. It is a thriller that is full of mysteries and clues and puzzle solving. The characters are very smart and very adept at evading danger and saving old historical church treausres and documents as well as figuring out questions that have been asked for centuries. I loved the historical background and the link of the past to the present in solving the mysteries of the bones.

This book was recommended to me by a lady on the bus. I was rereading Angels and Demons by Dan Brown, when the lady leaned over and mentioned Map of Bones being very similiar in style (taking a piece of history from science and religion and finding an adventure within modern times). It was no Dan Brown but a fun read. I read it quickly but found it a little out there at times. It was book you can definitely read on the bus to work (put down and pick up later in the day).

Wondergirl
This book was hardcore action from beginning to end... which, to be honest, was kind of exhausting after a while. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but there comes a point where, alright already! Author does extensive research into subject material, though, and I found myself interested enough to google some topics on my own to distinguish the fact from fiction. I'll read another of his books, but not yet. I don't think I have the stamina for back to back reading!

In the vein of the Da Vinci code, but a little more academic and not quite as controversial. A bit violent for me, but we listened to it while on a long drive, so it does at least keep you entertained. I am a little unclear about what happened at the end of the book, because the last CD kept fritzing out. I of course enjoyed all the art historcal and historical references as they ran around Europe and Egypt tracing the clues :) Mostly a good beach read.

I really disliked this book. It was very davinci code-esque, except that the entwined "romance" was straight out of a cheesy romance novel. Worse yet, I listened to this as an audiobook instead of reading it so I couldn't skim past the scenes that were so awkward they made me squirm.

I did enjoy the mystery, which almost made it worse. Were it not for wanting to find out "whodunit" I never would have endured the last half of the book!

Honestly the book was well written, and I liked the hero character development and interactions. The author emphasized his research into science and history, but didn't understand his research or decided to go the fantasy route after all. It was a huge distraction to the story and lost him a star there. The other star lost was for adolescent villain development. And I just almost never give 5 stars.

A bunch of people are murdered in a church using some crazy new secret weapon and steal the bones of the Three Magi. The hero of the story teams up with some helpers to find out how the new weapon works and try to keep the bad guys from using it.

Obviously a rip-off of the DaVinci code, but its done well. Very suspenseful. If you liked Dan Brown's books, this is a good one to read.
