okay, so since I'm like a supernerd, I ordered Burned on Amazon back in September, and selected one-day shipping so it showed up on my doorstep the day it's released, today. And then I got home from school and proceeded to read the whole thing in one sitting.

Okay, so the good:

Okay, so the good:
I stayed in the edge of my seat. I just love how Sara Shepard made A so....evil and thrilling and a genius at the same time! As like the other books, fingers were mainly pointed at one person; in this book it was Naomi. But this time, the girls though that A had an accomplice, possibly Graham. This made the plot have more layers, because it's no longer just one person behind everything. And I DEFINITELY did not see that A was the one who killed Tabitha. Was that just me? I was positive that the girls killed her! but nooooo, A revealed in the final words of the book that it was her (him?). So yeah. Shepard has pretty much nailed suspense. And the ending!!! I have to admit I was SO happy that they were going to confess, but wondering if the girls were really going to go through with it. I mean, FINALLY, A would have nothing on them. I guess it's bittersweet that they didn't really kill Tabitha.

The bad:
This is the ONLY book of the 12 so far that I was able to guess correctly a few things that were coming. For instance. The "I" or "J" on the locket? I saw immediately that was a "T" for Tabitha. Saw that one coming right when the necklace came into the picture. And when Jordan jumped ship, I knew she didn't die. The girls were going to be rescued when they were by the cave, how could they be left there to die? It just wouldn't make sense.

The ugly:
I just wish Aria, Spencer, Emily, and Hanna would gain some compassion. I mean, I know that they feel guilty for murdering Tabitha (though they didn't really) but they show nothing towards all the guys (and girls sometimes!) that they dis and dismiss. I'm happy Aria, at least, finally solidified a relationship, and I like Noel. (Watch him end up being A!! MIND = BLOWN.) And Spencer has something good going with Reefer, which I like. Emily and Jordan seemed like they really liked each other, but that relationship isn't going to happen because of the whole Jordan-will-be-caught-eventually thing. But I'm happy Jordan wasn't mixed up in the whole Ali thing (OR WAS SHE? DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN) But I really want Emily to get back together with Isaac (: And Hanna. Of all four girls, I have to say that she's my least favorite. Mike really seems to like (love?) her, and she just kind of brushes him off all the time. And she's just kind of the [insert insulting word here] of the story. But I understand Aria, Spencer, Emily, and Hanna's attitudes. I mean, what perfect little angel will leave the scene of a crime, or keep all of these pretty little secrets?

speaking of pretty little secrets, I CAN'T WAIT FOR Ali's Pretty Little Lies!!!! I really want to read from her perspective!

Okay, so i know I wrote the most on the ugly, but I still give this 5 stars. Why? It's a great bridge for twining together the finale with the rest of the series. And that cliffhanger at the end? PRICELESS.

We were close to the end, right? But no, no someone offered Sara more money to stretch this already paper thin story for another two books. Crushed and Betrayed, set to come out this year I think. Yikes.

Nothing new happens in this book. The girls continue to manipulate people and screw others over for their own benefit and then are shocked when A calls them on their indiscretions.

Sorry Sara Shepard, you've lost a fan. This series has dragged on so long that I can't keep an interest in it any more. It's just the same old same old, in each book. The only things that seem to change are the secrets, lies and who's A now.
Spencer, Aria, Emily and Hannah just sound like whiny brats now, and I just can't be bothered with wasting my time any more.
I think it's time to put this series to bed already.

Spoiler Alert: Thank God the Pretty Little Liars did NOT kill Tabitha!! In fact, poor Tabitha was beaten pretty badly by, whom I guessing is, Real Ali. All because Emily left the door open so she could escape.

But...

What about the security tape? The second person on the tape, since the FBI already nabbed Graham, was a male. Clearly, they weren't talking about Aria so could the new A be a guy?

I liked this book a lot more than the any of the other recent books in the series. It's about time that Shepard finally trapped the girls somewhere with a lot of the possible A suspects. I doubt it is realistic for a bunch of schools to go on a cruise, but I'm poor and go to potlucks, so I just might not know any better. I also like Reefer and Mike a lot more than most of the secondary characters in the series.

If you scroll through each of the books, there's a good chance you'll find a review of me gushing lovingly over it. That being said, this series needs to end.

I'm still trying to figure out if I'm beginning to like this series less and less because (a) it is, in fact, decreasing in quality, o...more Okay, here's the deal. I know I'm about the farthest away a reader can be from the target audience of the Pretty Little Liars novels, but you guys know that it's still one of my favorite series nonetheless. If you scroll through each of the books, there's a good chance you'll find a review of me gushing lovingly over it. That being said, this series needs to end.

I'm still trying to figure out if I'm beginning to like this series less and less because (a) it is, in fact, decreasing in quality, or (b) it's staying exactly the same, and I simply know all of Sara Shepard's storytelling quirks. After some thought, I think it's a mixture of both.

Maybe there was some quality to the first eight books that made me not notice, but as I was going through Burned, I found myself predicting the outcome for each of the characters as soon as they waltzed onto the page. I mean, at this point, any PLL reader should know that if Sara Shepard spends two-hundred pages attempting to make the reader believe a character is A, the big "twist" at the end will be that said character isn't actually A at all.

However, knowing storytelling patterns is one thing, but the plot progression in this series arch (books 9-12) has been laughably bad, and it was most noticeable in this installment. In my opinion, the original series (I'm now referring to books 1-8 as "the original series" since, when this whole mess is over, I'm probably just going to pretend books 9-14 never even happened) worked so well because there was a close-knit cast of characters whom I actually cared about, which is why the deaths and other plot twists were so shocking. At this point, though, Sara Shepard is just tossing in random extras in order to keep the plot moving along. However, I don't care that girl-I-met-thirty-pages-ago not only might have been unintentionally killed by Hanna but that she is also *gasp* the long-lost cousin of girl-who's-been-in-this-series-forever-but-only-gained-any-kind-of-relevance-ten-pages-ago or that boy-I-met-five-pages-ago is the ex-boyfriend of girl-who-was-unintentionally-killed-by-Aria. (By the way, when did it become so easy to kill people? These girls can't walk out to the mailbox anymore without killing someone or, at the very least, maiming them for life.)

This series worked so much better when the plot elements were fairly believable - Aria dating her teacher, Hanna having an eating disorder, etc. It's becoming horribly apparent that Sara Shepard doesn't know where she wants to take this story, especially since Burned didn't even progress the series' overall plot, except for a small development about Tabitha's death at the end (even though she, like so many others, was just an extra randomly thrown in order to create some kind of storyline). 'Tis a sad day when I have to give a book in one of my favorite series a two-star rating.(less)

Then it's released and I go to check it out on Goodreads, and it turns out there are more books coming?! Seriously?! This is getting ridiculous, just finish the damn series already and given us a solid conclusion and some satisfying answers!

The new Pretty Little Liars books (meaning those released after the original 8) are becoming more and more farfetched. I mean,...more I was so excited for the release of this book, marking it as the final instalment of the Pretty Little Liars series on my calendar. Then it's released and I go to check it out on Goodreads, and it turns out there are more books coming?! Seriously?! This is getting ridiculous, just finish the damn series already and given us a solid conclusion and some satisfying answers!

The new Pretty Little Liars books (meaning those released after the original 8) are becoming more and more farfetched. I mean, PLL is an outlandish farfetched concept to begin with, but at this point it's a complete joke. With Burned, I can safely say that this series now sits on the level of Kate Brian's Private series, which is the series I use as a benchmark for stupid-outlandish-plots-that-the-author-concocts-just-for-the-sake-of-publishing-more-books-and-raking-in-more-money. The Private series even had its own ridiculous Castaway book where Reed was trapped on a deserted island as part of a murder plot, and this book is the PLL equivalent of that!

The new secrets that the girls are hiding are just fucking insane. Hanna was involved in a hit and run over the summer, and had walked around for months, casually wondering if her passenger had died. A few months later she finds out that her passenger didn't die, but is now saddled with permanent mobility issues. But hey, that's no big deal in the world of the Pretty Little Liars!

As if Emily's scandalous pregnancy and entanglement with Gayle in the last novel weren't enough, in Burned she becomes romantically involved with a thief that's on the run from the FBI! And it doesn't end there - Emily seriously contemplates running away with her to Thailand, but has her plans foiled when the FBI storm the boat, and her thief girlfriend literally jumps overboard.

And let's not forget the crazy hijinks from the previous books - Hanna practically posing for child pr0n and getting caught stalking a classmate, Spencer framing her friend for drug possession and then accidentally drugging her future Princeton classmates, and Aria doing something scandalous in Iceland that we don't yet know about.

I hate that the Liars are now entangled in crimes that could land them in jail for life. It was bad enough when they'd blinded Jenna and kept quiet about it, but now they're half responsible for the murders of Tabitha and Gayle, involved in hit and runs and the framing of friends for serious crimes. I want to go back to the day where the Liars only had to worry about 'A' spilling comparatively superficial secrets, like Emily being a lesbian and Aria's dad cheating on her mother.

And it's not just the secrets themselves that are ridiculous, but the fact that the girls are supposedly holding it together during this time. If you've got a group of girls that are being tortured by a stalker, and who may have accidentally killed someone in Jamaica, how is it possible that one of them hasn't had a major breakdown already? Kate Brian's Private series might have been rubbish, but her Privilege series is on the ball with this kind of stuff. In that book we see a classmate completely go off the rails from witnessing a murder and helping to cover it up, but somehow the Liars are only a little bit stressed about the possibility that they've taken lives. WHAT THE HELL.

That being said, I'm still intrigued to find out what this Iceland secret is that Aria's keeping. Hopefully it's something a little less dumb and outlandish than accidentally-maybe murdering someone, but who am I kidding. We'll probably find out that Aria met this suuuuper cute guy who she cheated on Noel Kahn with, and who convinced her to sacrifice 18 virgins in the name of Xenu. Or Shepard will pull a Kate Brian and randomly introduce aliens or magic even though it makes NO sense.

Overall: Gahhh Sara Shepard, just end this series already! I'm no longer gripped by the mystery of A, convinced that it's a different person in each book. I don't even really care about the identity of A at this point, I just want the series to end, with a big explanation and plotarcs tied up in neat little bows. Stop dragging out this series for the sake of money, and give the readers something that's remotely satisfying. Just fucking tell us if Ali's still alive and if she's A, and how the fuck she's been managing all this. That's all we want. (less)

But, picking up another Pretty Little Liars book after not reading one for about six months is kind of like going back to an old friend's house, sitting in front of their fire place, and having a homemade snack. So, this was the first actual gap I've had to sit through between two of the books. It was an interesting experience. But, picking up another Pretty Little Liars book after not reading one for about six months is kind of like going back to an old friend's house, sitting in front of their fire place, and having a homemade snack. It's really nice and I wish I could convey to some of my friends how good these books are. They are kind of petty and sometimes unbelievable, but still light, addicting, and fun. I'm a lot more tolerant with the plot holes in this series than with anything else, actually. No matter what, the books are interesting.

Burned was not a let down. After reading a lot of the Pretty Little Liars books, you can start to predict the way the characters think and how the action will happen. That was definitely evident for me in this book and it was really my only complaint. The girls spent a lot of time suspecting people of A, but having gone through this same scenario many times with previous books, I knew from the beginning that they were going to be wrong. This is kind of the case with each novel in the series, but I felt they spent a little more time than normal accusing people of being the stalker. Maybe that's just me, but whatever. Either way, for every twist I DID expect, there was another one that I couldn't predict. It was enough to keep me on the edge of my seat and really surprise me from time to time.

I'm really excited with the direction that the series is going in. It's a little different than the early books, but it has to be- they can't tell the police about A, because no one would believe them. So, they're forced to take some matters into their own hands. Each character is a lot more paranoid than they used to be and you can start to see how the events that have taken place over the past couple of years have affected them. In the end though, it's still the same old series that you're used to if you've been following the books until now. But it's reaching that high point again where A is becoming more violent and I'm wondering if this time one of the Liars will actually be hurt by him or her. A lot of the clues at the end of this novel got me curious too and alluded to Ali still being alive, which I think would be the most plausible and interesting direction for the plot to go. With the PLL books in the past, you've always found out who A was in every fourth novel (#4 & #8), but this time we didn't. Sara Shepard has said that there will only be two more books, so I'm thinking it's going to be one crazy ending, if it has to be extended for more books. We'll see.

Either way, this is another great edition to the PLL series! I'm really aggravated that we have to wait until June for the next installment, but at least Ali's Pretty Little Lies will be out soon- I'm definitely looking forward to that. If you've read these books in the past, I would highly suggest you pick up Burned. For me, the series is still interesting and hasn't gotten old, which is hard for a series spanning over twelve books to do. Props to the author.

For me, one of the series that does it is the Pretty Little Liars series and as soon as I discovered that Book #12 Burned was available I knew I just had to read it.
You would think that the foursome would know never to stray far from Rosewood as even out in the middle of nowhere , "A" can find them. In Burned , we learn that before the Cruise in which the four girls are going to take is that Hanna took a girl home from the club, only to have the car crash and Hanna calling the girls helped put Madison in the drivers seat and fled the scene. Now on the Cruise , we discover Emily is trying still to be forgiven from her parents when they discovered that she gave birth last summer - what will happen when Emily stumbles across a stowaway who happens to be a rich escaped convict ? When she offers Emily the chance to disappear - will Emily take it or will "A" call the authorities about the stowaway before Emily can ? Aria , signing up for a scavenger hunt ends up getting paired with a boy from another school - what happens though when it turns out that Aria's new partner is none other than Tabitha - the girl that they "killed" in Jamaica ? Does he know more than he is letting on about what happened that night in Jamaica ? Hanna and Spencer will be in for a surprise as remember Naomi - from the previous Pretty Little Liar books . Well, Naomi will turn out to be Hanna's roommate and even worse is that Naomi turns out to be none other than Madison's cousin - does Madison know what really happened that night and has she shared it with Naomi ? Spencer's hunky friend from Princeton - Reefer is also on the cruise but what will happen when it seems that someone else wants Reefer all to herself - will Naomi win Reefer all to herself when "A" starts threatning Spencer to stay away or else ?

I liked that this book was a little different because it was set on a cruise ship. I mean, who doesn't love a good mystery on a cruise ship? Really the only thing I dislike about this series is how far apart the books come out! Especially because there is so many of them, it's hard to keep up with what has happened since the last book. So I usually find myself looking up the synopsis and re-readin...more As always....this was another PLL book I couldn't wait to get my hands on, and I couldn't put down! I liked that this book was a little different because it was set on a cruise ship. I mean, who doesn't love a good mystery on a cruise ship? Really the only thing I dislike about this series is how far apart the books come out! Especially because there is so many of them, it's hard to keep up with what has happened since the last book. So I usually find myself looking up the synopsis and re-reading the last books summary so I remember. I really love this series but I am beginning to wonder how far the author is going to take it. There were an original 8 books to the series, but once the show became really big, she decided to write an additional 4- making a total of 12. So this book was the 12th (keep in mind she wrote a novella between books 4&5 that I read and she has a prequel coming out next month) AND she announced a 13th book coming out next summer. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE this series, I just feel like the author is going to try to milk it because of it's popularity, and I feel like she is going to lose her edge by dragging out the series too long. Like I said, I loved this book but there were a few parts where I was like "geeze, when the hell are we going to find out who A is?" or "Wow...that is kind of unbelievable"

There was one part towards the end of the book where the girls are stranded in the ocean and they hear a sharp piercing menacing laugh that sounds like Ali's. Okay, come on now...in the middle of the ocean? Where could "A" or Ali have been hiding? Some parts are just over-done and I kind of had to roll my eyes at some parts.

To back up a little...I will give an outline of the book.
The Rosewood Day high school is sending their kids on a cruise, you know...because so many schools actually do that. They have to choose one class to take on the cruise that will be their final exam grade or something. The story starts off with them boarding the cruise ship. Emily is sad, as usual, because she FINALLY told her parents about the baby that she had. Her dad is furious and her mother can't stop crying over it. Poor Em. I really like her, but she is so damn sad all the time, and so negative. Reading her POV's throughout the book always make me sad for her. Then Emily meets a girl named Jordan who sneaks on the boat (I have been on a cruise, realistically there is no way to sneak onto a boat) but of course she does and then later we find out that Jordan is wanted for being a thief, stealing HUGE things all over the world like planes, cars, boats, etc. I am betting she is about Emily's age, so how she became at large I have no idea, but hey- whatev. So Emily falls for this girl Jordan and then of course she is heartbroken when she finds out what Jordan has done, and when the FED's swarm the ship when it docks, she jumps off the side (and miraculously survives, because that happens)and sends Emily a postcard a few days later-promising they will reunite. So that is Emily's adventure on the boat. Then there is Aria- her and her boyfriend Noel are on the ship together but both of them decide to do different activities. Aria chooses an Eco-scavenger hunt while Noel chooses to do surfing. Aria meets a guy named Graham who she pairs up with. Turns out Graham is Tabitha's boyfriend (Tabitha being the girl that Aria accidentally pushed over the balcony of a hotel in Jamaica the summer before) so when the girls start receiving texts from A when they board the boat, everyone assumes it is Graham. Aria doesn't believe it though, until Noel finds a necklace in the sand and gives it to Aria and later she finds out there is a picture of Ali and Tabitha in it- that's when the girls figure that Tabitha and Ali were friends when they were in a mental hospital- Aria begins to believe Graham is A too, and she thinks he is out for revenge. So Aria's story has quite a bit of drama. Hannah's story ties in with Aria a little. Naomi, a popular girl, befriends Hannah. Hannah finds out the drunk girls who's car she accidentally crashed turned out to be Naomi's cousin. The whole beginning of the book is about that night. Hannah meets a girl in a bar named Madison and she is too drunk to function. Hannah loses control of Madison's car when she offers to drive her home, and they crash. Hannah who is terrified of being in trouble calls her friends to help her move Madison into the passenger seat and to bail. So of course with THAT big secret looming over her Hannah finds out Madison and Naomi are cousins and instantly begins to believe that Naomi is A! When Hannah sneaks on her computer she even finds an album with pictures from Jamaica! Now all clues are pointing towards Graham and A. Of course Sara Shepard has a great way of always leading us down the wrong path. I am thoroughly excited to find out who A will be, because we find out it isn't Naomi. Of course we find that out after Spencer too thinks she is A, after Naomi tries to steal Spencer's new boyfriend, Reefer (who is introduced a book or two back, a guy she meets at Princeton). Naomi does pull some stalkerish moves by making Spencer slip, putting gum in her hair, and sabotaging her bed, but not because she was A....just because she is a crazy bitch. So Spencer's whole portion of the story is about her trying to hide hers and Reefers relationship from Naomi, because nobody steals A's man!

So it was a pretty entertaining book. Each of the girls found some decent trouble to get into, and in the end we still don't know who A is. We still suspect it is Graham. When he recognizes Aria wearing his dead girlfriends necklace, he chases her and they make it down to the boiler room and there is an explosion. The boat alarms sound and then everyone is supposed to get off the boat. All the girls meet up and decide to take a life boat and go bury the necklace at sea so nobody links it back to them. So of course they go out away from the boat and away from where the rest of the classes and students are filing, and they get stranded in the ocean. How? Well when they swam into a cavern (all 4 of them because nobody was the lookout) SOMEBODY pops their life boat. They weren't in the cavern very long yet somehow someone was able to come up, unannounced, puncture the boat, and then leave. Or the boat was punctured before they left the ship and it was sinking slowly. Like I mentioned above, that was kind of a unbelievable part. But hey, it's all fiction! I can admit I love my cliche high school books with a twist or horror and mystery. It's my guilty pleasure. ;) The end of the book they decide to finally confess to what happened to Tabitha. But then a news report shows that Tabitha was killed by blunt force trauma to the head. So Aria finds out that after all the racked up guilty she has had for so long, her push didn't kill Tabitha...but WHO did? Who killed Tabitha, who killed Gayle, who stalked the girls on the cruise? Who?? This suspense is really starting to kill me.

SO, next month comes the pre-quel before the series starts- with Ali's point of view...and then next summer comes the next book in the series. Wonder if it will be the last? Hmm.

I was really hoping this would be the last book but it's not.

Honestly speaking the main body of the book is exactly the same as the other pretty little liars book albeit some new names. Emily gets a crazy girlfriend again, Hannah is trying to be friends with the popular crowd, Spencer is running after another perfect guy and Aria is still kooky. Throw in A and you have it.

I say it every time I read one of these books: I love this series! I have so much fun reading that I am willing to overlook the numerous implausibilities and just let myself go along for the ride with Emily, Aria, Spencer, and Hanna.

I loved that the book was set on a cruise ship – it was a really fun way to mix things up.The big mystery still revolves around who ‘New A’ is, and keeping the incident in Jamaica a secret, but things get more complicated when Hanna is involved in a car crash at the beginning of the story. She calls the other girls for help and now they have one more secret to keep – and of course, A knows all about it and seems determined to torture them with that knowledge.

So there were a number of mysteries in this book, many of which are still unresolved by the end, but I definitely was able to eliminate a couple of A suspects from my list! However, this book definitely raised the possibility of a duo or group of people working together as A. Interesting…

By now, I definitely know what to expect from this series, and it never disappoints me. Twelve books in, I feel like there isn’t much left for me to say that I haven’t already about much I love these books, and so my reviews in this series have become shorter and shorter. As always, I’m eager to see where the next book takes things!

Ok, I went into this book thinking it was the last one (it isn't) and though I don't want this series to be over (it's my guilty pleasure extremely silly and implausible yet addicting young adult read) I really just need to know who the last A is. This series is basically a giant cock tease.
