This book truly convinced me that Pretty Little Liars is far superior to The Lying Game. Sorry, Sara. I was originally rooting for The Lying Game, being as it was the underdog, but Pretty Little Liars just towers over its opponent.

Shepard does the quadro-narration thing very well. It seems like a difficult thing to do, but she pulls it off, and she does it well. I don't ever confuse the girls with one another, which often happens in books with multiple narrators. (I heard that Dearly, Departed i...more

Yet another nail biting book in the Pretty Little Liars series! I have so much fucking love for these books and the unforgettable characters Sara has created. Its very unfair what these four girls go through.

It's a sad day when you start to slowly realize that one of your favorite (guilty pleasure) series is slowly starting to wane in quality. It was originally supposed to be four books, but anyone who reached the end of Unbelievable knew that there was enough life left in the series that adding four more books just seemed natural. This was really disappointing. This is one of the worst I've seen from Sara, I'm sorry, but when are these girls ever going to effin' learn? Seriously, It's the same thing every damn time. First, the secrets are just becoming ridiculous. Really? Noel's dad being a crossdresser and Emily having a baby was one of the most insane and unrealistic i've read so far. Why are we still beating this dead horse?

I started reading the PLL series in '08 and I loved it. Every time I got a new PLL book, I'd stay up all night reading it in one sitting. I thought the ending in Wanted was perfect: open, a little creepy, still leaving you with the feeling that Someone Is Watching You. Scene.

I loved it as usual. I love the story Sara Shepard has spun between these girls and their personal stalker. You get to know each individual character as the series progresses. Another thing is that Shepard does a fantastic job of throwing in twists and turns you never see coming. But no matter how many issues and plots are going on in one book, they all get solved at one point or another. Aren't these covers just the cutest? I mean, come on, it's so easy to fall for that pretty cursive script and pastel palette! Und auch jetzt kann ich einfach nicht davon lassen und bin so froh, dass Sara Shepard sich dazu entschieden hatte, doch noch ein paar Teile raus zu bringen, bevor sie sich dazu entschließt, die Geschichte um unsere Lieblings-Liars ganz Ruhen zu lassen.

Ich liebe ihren Schreibstil. Er hat so was mysteriöses, etwas total freches und jugendliches. Du versuchst die Geschichte mit den Händen zu fassen, aber du schaffst es einfach nicht, weil sie dir zwischendurch immer wieder durch die Finger hindurch gleitet. In dem einen Moment glaubst du, du hättest das große Geheimnis um A gelüftet doch nur wenige Sekunden später stehen wieder andere Türen offen, andere Vermutungen wurden angestellt und wieder hast du etwas ganz anderes im Sinn. Sara Shepard schafft es, ihre Leser so sehr zu verwirren, dass ihnen gar nichts mehr übrig bleibt, immer und immer weiter zu lesen. Eigentlich ein guter Schachzug, wenn man seine Bücher auch verkaufen möchte. Es ist eine Sucht die entsteht, sobald man mit dem ersten Band anfängt. Es gibt kein Weg zurück. Das ist es, was diese Bücher meiner Meinung nach aus macht. Sara Shepard ist einfach eine wunderbare Autorin und ich beneide sie total um ihr schriftstellerisches Talent.

Zu den Charakteren muss ich glaube ich nicht groß etwas sagen. Sowohl die vier Pretty Little Liars als auch sämtliche anderen Protagonisten, welche, die bereits von Beginn dabei sind und welche, die erst neu dazu gekommen sind, entwickeln sich von Kapitel zu Kapitel, von Buch zu Buch weiter. Es macht unglaublich Spaß ihr Leben quasi an ihrer Seite "mit zu erleben". Man fiebert richtig mit, malt sich aus, was man selbst in der Situation getan hätte.

Ich finde zu diesen Büchern kann man nicht viel sagen, da man einfach zu viel verraten würde. Gerade solche Bücher muss man einfach selber lesen, man muss diese Gefühl erfahren; man muss einfach selbst herausfinden, ob diese Bücher einen in den Bann ziehen oder nicht. Wenn man vorher zu viel weiß, ist der ganze Zauber verflogen ... deshalb bleibt es nun auch bei dieser für mich ungewöhnlich kurzen Rezension. Ich möchte euch nicht zu viel verraten und hoffe, dass ihr selbst auch zu den Büchern greift und euch fesseln lasst von dieser unglaublich aufregenden, actionreichen, geheimnisvollen, verrückten und romantischen Geschichte von Sara Shepard.

Fazit:

Ein totales Muss für jede Leseratte. Ich kann diese Reihe nur empfehlen und hoffe, dass noch ganz viele andere Menschen diese tollen Bücher entdecken und lesen werden. (less)

These girls are so stupid. This book is the point where I really can't justify any of their actions any more. I know that this is supposed to be the book where they realize that A lets them dig their own graves a lot of the time, but I feel like they should have came to this realization a long time ago.

Hanna's A problem is entirely her own stupidity. I was dying of second-hand embarrassment the entire time. He isn't interchangeable with all of the other male characters.

Spencer also gets herself into trouble. Why can't they just mention that they have stalkers? The people at the party would probably have thought it was cool.

I actually did kind of like Aria's plot. We at least got a little bit of closure about her family situation. It's nice that her awful parents at least attempted to explain their behavior, even if it is several books too late. It would have been a lot easier for her to maybe hint that Noel was keeping a secret, but it at least is the mildest case of the girls being idiots.

Emily's secret is the main plot of this book. It was kind of stupid the whole way through. I have a hard time seeing how Emily could have effectively kept any weight gain from showing, especially as an active swimmer before and after her pregnancy. Emily is surrounded by terrible parents that happen to be rich, and I don't think the same person that knows Spencer would be that easily swayed by a wealthy parent. Also, there is no way that the police would not know about A after the end of this book if it was remotely realistic.

My biggest problem with the book is that there wasn't really any suspense, and it didn't seem like the girls were in any danger until the end. The parents in this series swing so rapidly from villains to saints, that I knew that Emily's parents would conveniently be completely fine with her having a baby a few books from now. It didn't make any logical sense for (view spoiler) to be A, because it didn't fit into the timeline. This A seems content to just taunt the girls as they do stupid stuff all on their own, so I just didn't really expect A to do anything proactive.(less)

I thought this book was mediocre, because all the events that happened seemed kind of repetitive of all the other books in the series. A has attempted to break Aria up with Noel, ruin Spencer's academic career, tell everyone Emily was pregnant, and mess up Hanna's social life several times in the previous books. But the suspension of who A is really gives the storyline more depth rather than the things the girls are dealing with. One reason I thought the book could've been better was when Mike and Hanna broke up, she should've left it at that instead of going through all the trouble to get Mike to dump Colleen. Hanna has to learn how to move on. Another reason this book was okay was with Aria: if she'd told Noel about his dad, they never would've broken up. Relationships are about trust and not keeping secrets. Third of all, Emily could've gotten much more help if she told her parents she was pregnant with finding a good adoption family. I think keeping a secret that big from her parents will cost her something important in the next book. Lastly, if Spencer never put the drugs in the brownies in the first place, A would never have the idea to put a bunch more in them. It was an atrocious idea in the first place to even think of doing so. All in all, this book was decent, and a little dull, but I'm planning to read the next book, Burned, to find out who A is.

Not so fast.

There is a new A and "New A" is wreaking havoc all over again.

These poor girls can not keep themselves out of trouble. One wrong step, even a misstep, and New A catches it and the blackmail game begins all over again.

In this latest installment, the girls are older, but, sadly, not any more mature. Minus 1 star from me.

I’d like to start off by saying I haven’t been too impressed with the PLL series – its just one of those series where you need to find out what happens in the end. Basically, I love to hate the Pretty Little Liars books. When the ABC show came on the air, it inspired me to start reading the series. I worked my way through the first 10 pretty quickly, and I just felt I needed some closure to the storyline so I decided to pick up #11. The way it ends, it doesn’t seem to be the end of the series but who knows.
Overall, I don’t think Sara Shepard has a very unique style of writing, its very similar to many other YA books out there. I find that it can get a little cheesy, and she drops brand names too frequently for my liking (especially in the early books).
Aria, Hanna, Spencer and Emily are the main characters throughout the series. The girls are likeable enough, but I didn’t feel there was much character development in this novel and it was lacking any significant emotional issues for any of the girls. They continue to make ridiculous decisions that end up with consequences or tragedy, which I’m getting pretty sick of. The problems that plague the characters in this book were just downright silly. I mean, Noel’s dad dressing in drag? What?? Emily having a baby and her parents never finding out? SERIOUSLY? Ok and all the stuff with Spencer and the Princeton Eating Club is so stupid I could hardly even read those parts.
This book was a super fast read, I think it only took me a couple of hours to get through. At 306 pages it is a decent size, but the story moves pretty quickly. Once the book was over though, I felt myself thinking back and wondering what the actual point of this book was. I felt like nothing substantial had happened. I didn’t find it as exciting or dramatic as her other books in the series. Personally, I feel like the series should have ended with something like 5 or 6 books and Shepard is just being ridiculous stretching it to 11. I truly believe this addition had much too weak of a plot to support an entire novel.(less)

I have to admit: I was a little annoyed when Sara Shepard decided to write more of this series after the great, supposed to be, ending in Wanted. However, I kept reading, and I'm glad she continued because, as crazy as they all are, I can't get enough of these characters. I watch the TV show, too, and, while I enjoy that, the books are MUCH better, of course. (I just have to think of them as two separate things.) It should come as no surprise that I loved this book. The girls are still being stalked by a new A because of what I’ll call ’the incident’ in Jamaica (and if you don’t know what I’m talking about, I don’t want to spoil it for you, because I know you’re going to go read this, right???). On top of that, they each have their own struggles: Spencer trying to get in with the right crowd at Princeton; Hanna wanting her ex-boyfriend back; Aria learning a secret about her boyfriend Noel’s family; and Emily…well, if you’ve read the previous book, Ruthless, you already know Emily’s secret, but it plays a major role in this book.

I feel like there’s nothing new for me to say about this series, because I love every book, and get totally wrapped up in the stories. As always, my favourites are Hanna and Spencer – I feel like in some way I’ve always wanted to be like them: Spencer is driven, intelligent, and achieves pretty much everything she sets out to achieve; Hanna is pretty, popular, and powerful – but the best parts of these books, for me, are when the girls are all together, helping one another through a problem or running for their lives from A, or trying to figure out just who A is this time. They are each well-developed characters and by now I just feel so attached to them and like I know who they are. Sara Shepard has kept each girl’s actions consistent with her character throughout the series. I never stop and think to myself that the Spencer I know wouldn’t do/say/etc. that!

Of course, I have about a hundred guesses as to who A might be in this latest arc, but the beauty of this series is that I’m always wrong! I’ve never faulted the books for being predictable. It’s just too much fun to jump in and enjoy the ride.

As long as Sara Shepard keeps writing these books, I’m going to keep reading them! A little birdy (ahem, Wikipedia - beware of potential spoilers) told me that the 12th book in the series, Burned, is set to come out in December of this year (although I thought I read somewhere that it might be the last in the series - please no!). I’ve spent quite a while trying to figure out my attraction to these books; they’re certainly not my usual YA fare. One of the possible reasons is that Sara Shepard has mastered the art of surprise. I know that there’s an A, I know the girls are going to do something dumb to keep her quiet and yet I’m frequently surprised by what A has in store for them next and the lengths to which the girls will go.

Aside from HP (Harry Potter, my ultimate love) This is the best book series I have ever read. I got this book the day it came out, and read it in a little less than 2 days. I am actually a little bummed now because I am so used to taking a while to read a book that I keep thinking "Where is my book?" and then I sadly realize I did indeed finish it. I am also heartbroken that this is almost the end of the series. The last one comes out this December. I started reading this series in the Fall of 2010 when there were only 8 books, and then after the TV show kicked off and it got so popular, the author added four more. I was stoked for the extra 4 books and I'm really looking forward to the last one (and dreading it also, if that makes sense.)

This book had a lot of in depth background on Emily and her baby, who is actually a big character in this book. Being a teen mom myself, I really related to Em in this book. As usual, I thought Hannah was a bitch. I loved Aria, but Spence (my fav character) disappointed me in this book. In a nutshell the girls are still being taunted by this new A. A girl name Gayle who Em promised her baby to and then changed her mind, becomes a prime suspect for being "A". Turns out Gayle is Tabitha's mom (the girl the the 4 some accidentally killed) and at the end of the book Gayle is killed too. So we still have no idea who "A" is. My theory of course is that Ali got out of the house at Poconos because Em left the door open, and Ali has been behind this all along. Of course though that would be too obvious so I am not sure if the author would make it that apparent. Wouldn't it be nuts if all this time we thought Courtney had taken over Ali's life and maybe just MAYBE Ali was the crazy one this whole time? And Ali is really Courtney and Courtney is "A" trying to get revenge from psycho Ali? Or Maybe "A" somehow pulled off this Tabitha girl and Ali really was Tabitha. SO many possibilities, it makes my head spin.

LOVE this book, and I am sure after book 12 comes out, I will be re-reading the entire series!(less)

Is the usual roller-coaster with the liars. Ups and downs.

Let me start with Spencer. She is living the glamorous life of being accepted to Princeton, but A is not happy with it. She ruins her chance of being accepted by a elite group after a pot incident. Poor Spencer when will she be able to relax and enjoy a warm afternoon just drinking a cold ice tea.

Hanna, this girl is just desperate. In Stunning we see Hanna touching her inner A as she fights to win Mike back. A makes a fool out of Hanna as always. Hanna goes into stalking mode, but it was a set-up by A to humiliate her at the end.

Aria, she was the less taunted by A, but it doesn't mean she won't be on the final book. Aria is still hiding her big secret, something she did in Iceland and only Hanna knows about it, and of course A. I have some predictions she had sex with a dude on the next room. Might be wrong my theory. On Stunning, Aria sees another side of her boyfriend's dad. At first I thought she was going to start a forbidden relationship with him. As usual the author makes us think that with the summary but it wasn't the case. Noel's father is a cross-dresser. The dude likes to dress as a women, we don't get answers about why he does it, maybe we will on the final book. A forces Aria to break up with Noel, but at the end they end up back together. A will not be happy and she will expose Aria as a liar on the final book with Noel. I think she might not end up with Noel after the finale.

Emily, poor girl. I used to dislike her on the first two story arcs. I have grown fond of her. Being pregnant at seventeen sucks, and more when you don't have much people on your side. Emily's story line was the main one of the book. At first Emily was to give her baby in adoption to a family named the Barks, but when another route, the money route. Its here things get crazy after she goes back on her word. The author makes us think Gayle, the women who wanted Emily's baby was A. I didn't fell for it, I know the author tricks, making us think a certain person is A but at the end she is not.

The book ended with a bang, another death and the liars not even close to discovering the identity of A. Burned the epic conclusion to the series will come out December four. Six months, six freaking months away. I just hope the author finally closes this chapter of her life and no more Pretty Little Liars. Maybe she can start a Spin-Off series with different characters, a copy-cat A, just like the Scream series. I mean all A's after Mona are copy-cats. Can't wait, and hope this time we see them finally graduate from High School and get the happy ending they deserve and that they start behaving. (less)

Things with no explanation:
-Isaac telling Emily they needed to talk... and then the author just leaving it at that. Are they going to get back together? Is he going to chew her out for not telling him about their baby? Same thing with Emily's parents, is she going to tell them? The main storyline always ends with a cliffhanger. Can't you at least resolve the subplots?
-Hanna's car accident and Aria's trip to Iceland, both over the summer. Both are alluded to with no de...more This series is a trainwreck.

Things that were ridiculous and/or made no sense:
-How the police knew the girls had gotten a TEXT telling them to come to Gayle's house because the baby was in danger. When the girls told the story to the police, they said they had gotten an "anonymous tip." They did not say what kind it was, and the police never asked. Anonymous tip does not automatically equal text.
-Mike being confronted with video evidence of Hanna stalking him and deciding that it's "kind of amazing." I could understand him being freaked out but forgiving her anyway, but what guy in his right mind thinks his ex-girlfriend spying on him from behind bushes, following him in parking lots, and trying to sabotage his new relationship is "amazing"?
-Hanna trusting A and then being surprised when it blew up in her face. Are you seriously dumb enough to think that A is even remotely on your side? Will you never learn?
-Spencer is smart enough to get into Princeton but apparently not smart enough to know that, despite the fact that the 1950s are over, people still have potlucks, and NO THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT YOU LITERALLY PUT POT IN THE FOOD! WTF!!!

I think my favorite part was when they walked into Gayle's house and it "smelled oddly of nail polish remover." I'm just glad it wasn't VANILLA EFFING SOAP.(less)

Slight spoilers ahead...

These books always fly by and are fabulously suspenseful - now that Private and Privilege by Kate Brian are over (nnoooooo, whyyyyyy), Sara Shepard is the only one who is currently providing this soapy teen noir type of series. I wish there were more out there!

This one had some pros and cons. Emily's story was so harrowing that the others' plot-lines just seemed a bit trivial in comparison. Aria in particular seems to be getting stuck with the worst subplots these days -...more
