This is one of the more polished and well-written indie YAs I've read. The Mind Readers is a fast-paced, entertaining read with a likable heroine in Cameron Winters, who knows the most intimate and frightening secrets of those around her. The book moves along at a brisk pace with a plot concerning a murder mystery, a training facility for kids with supernatural powers, and the investigative society who is out to stop them.

OH MY GOSH!!!!!! For 2 or 3 months, I thought The Last Song was the best novel out there. I have been proven wrong! Lori Brighton's YA novel was filled with action, emotional pains, characters that I wanted to hurt -- physically. Once I got closer to the climax, I was practically yelling at the charries for doing stupid .... stuff :). The story's somewhat-hero, the one I yelled at the most, describes Cameron as a "sitting duck" while trying to persuade her into going back with him to Aaron's hos...more

All I have to say is that I cannot wait to read the next book in the series. There's so much in this book that makes me wonder what's really going on in Cameron's world.
The ending was spectacular! I thought I was missing some pages after the last sentence because it was just so simple. Talk about a cliffhanger!!
The guy at the end of the book, I can't remember his name since it's been a while since I've read the book, I hope something happens between them because the other guy she was with was s...more

Initially I was not aware it was a YA novel when I downloaded this to read free to my Kindle. As I read, I discovered elements that indicated that was the case. Even so, I found this to be an enjoyable read.
I needed to overlook some writing elements that could have used some improvement. Trite and constant repetitive usage of phrases like “raking hands through hair” & “I never felt this way before” coupled with multiple examples of reminding the readers of certain facts (like Aaron was rich...more

This review is short, to the point, and will have a spoiler.
I picked this book up a while back because it was available for free. On one hand I thought the world the characters live in -with the two sides and fighting blah blah blah- was interesting. I kind of liked Cameron at first....but then the relationship happened. At first it was ok, but later on. I wanted to kill her. (view spoiler)...more

I usually don’t like mind reading stories because I find it an invasion of privacy and it’s almost always written in an embarrassing way for the heroine who’s POV we’re reading. This story starts out with Cam reading minds which I was kind of ok with but then Lewis came into play and I felt the same as all the other mind reading situations where she’s thinking embarrassing thoughts even though she suspects him of reading minds. Why would you do that? And it’s kind of hard to believe that in all...more

This is the first book I've read by Lori Brighton and I must say I've thoroughly enjoyed her writing style. She has a way of grabbing your attention within the first few pages (an amazing ability to say in the least) and her characters are all very diverse. The plot offered quite a few twists and turns, and as much as I tried to figure out the ending to the story, it was nearly impossible. Cameron is a 17 year old girl who has an extraordinary ability, unfortunately that ability makes her a "fre...more

Wow, these freebie amazon reads are really impressive. This story was so much better than I’d expected. This crazy sci-fi-action-thriller of a book did have some editing issues, but not enough to hinder the flow. I had no problems reading this in one setting, give or take a few cig breaks.
In sum, I had some issues with Cameron, as she was so insecure and needy at times, but I guess I can’t really blame her, especially with how she was brought up – thinking she w...more

I was pleasantly surprised with this book. I got it free on kindle a long time ago, and it has just been sitting on my Kindle bookshelf waiting to be read. I'm glad I finally did!
The protagonist is a 17-year-old girl named Cameron who can read minds. Her grandmother does as well, and, as far as she knows, they're the only two mind-readers out there. Then a new guy comes to her school, Lewis, and much to her surprise, he is a mind-reader as well. He offers her the chance to go away to a...more

OK, so there's this smattering of people who can read minds, and this high school girl is one of them. She lives as a refugee, forever moving about the country so the bad guys don't kill her like they did her father, and so the normies don't reject her as did her mother. She gets taken to an island run by Aaron, where she lears that her ilk are called-- drumroll, please-- Mind Readers. (Note the upper case letters. Somehow it adds to the mystique.) And she learns that she can't trust Aaron or th...more

The Mind Readers was certainly not a boring or bad book, but I'm digging deep into my brain to remember how I felt about it. I really should have reviewed this right after I read it a couple months ago. Anyway...
The beginning of the books grasped my attention and held it, but when Lewis showed up, my attention span wavered here and there. The problem wasn't the characters themselves...it was more along the lines of the cliche's that popped up again and again. I liked Cam, and I lik...more

I gave this book a five. Why? I thought it was a good book and I think this book just pulled you into the scene. The main character is Cameron. In the book she first did not know how to control her powers, but then this mysterious boy Lewis comes into her life. Cameron thought Lewis killed one of her friends but Lewis just came at a bad time. Cameron is the main character because she can read minds but theirs something special about her that she doesn't know. Her mother abandoned her and at a yo...more
Cameron was sick of running, sick of her Grandmother and sick of not being normal. See, Cameron could read minds and she knew everybody's deep, dark secrets. Taught by her grandmother to not act on what she could read, Cameron was torn when a friend of hers was found dead outside a popular eatery and she heard the killer's thoughts. She wanted to go to the police but was afraid to.

There is too much suspicion and doubt reeking in this novel it's driving me insane! The big question is always this: Who to trust? The author injects enough kindness and callousness in each of the characters surrounding Cameroon Winters, that I'm confused where my sympathies should lay. And after everything that has happened, we are back to square one by the end of the book. But that frustrating question refuses to go away-- who to trust? who to believe? Now there's simply no option but to read...more
You know those books that are really good in the beginning, but as you get closer to finishing it, they get really bad? This was one of those books. Not only did the characters completely confuse me (I mean, Lewis was hot, but he was kind of a tool), but I didn't understand how on earth a sequel could possibly be achieved. I mean, I guess for a free e-book it was decent, but I honestly felt like it could have been so much better with more work.

This was an interesting combination of excellent plot and distracting missteps. I'd say this book has amazing potential, but felt rushed to print.
With self-pubs, one of the major themes that comes up in review after review is editing problems (not all self-pubs, of course, and I'm a huge fan of the "genre" as a whole). In this case, the editing problems weren't grammatical. They went deeper than that. The two major problems were consistency and over-telling (as opposed to showing).

I am very undecided with this book. On the one hand, I really like the interesting plot and the characters, but on the other hand, this book is slow at times and hard to really get into and enjoy. First, I will discuss all the cons. This book is really slow to get into and I found thatI only really enjoyed the last third of the book itself. The first third is boring with annoying characters and not much going on. The second third is better, because mre thigs are going on. The writing still feels...more
Over the weekend, I realized 1. the reason I keep compulsively reading bad reviews of Fifty Shades of Grey is actually that I like reading stuff on my phone, and 2. omg, there are free kindle books on amazon!
Ergo, time to put lots of kindle books on my iphone.
This book was free! wtf! This book is way too good to be free! I spent all weekend reading it.

I don't remember where exactly the recommendation for this book came from. In looking through my records, I see that I got it when it was free, so that must have ultimately been the deciding factor in getting the book.
In looking it up, I see nothing but giddy, glowing reviews talking about how wonderful and compelling and blah blah blah. But that's just not the case. Most of the book feels like something I've read before. The heroine is not enchanting but merely a Bella Swan with a bit more mox...more

When I was in the fourth grade my teacher posed a very interesting question. “Think about this long and hard” she said to us while scribbling the question across the chalkboard. “Because…no matter your answer, there are always repercussions.”
The question was: “If you could have ANY super-power, what would it be and why?”
Not such difficult a question right? Wrong. See, the tricky part comes in the second part of her statement, not necessarily the question itself. “There are always repercussions.”...more

This book really made my brain hurt - for a number of reasons. But like a demented, crazy person who can't think straight, I can't wait for more. I LOVED the concept, and I thought the book had a kick-butt end. Having said that, the book can't be more infuriating to read. The book was very chaotic, and basically everything jumped all over the place.
Before I begin, I want to say I don't think Brighton gave me a chance to like Lewis. I mean, he had his moments, but he never made me swoon. It felt...more

so, where to start. i really don't know what to say about this book. it was good and you wouldn't even notice that you are already at the end. a page turner, really.
throughout the story, you would really think hard who are to be trusted and who are telling lies. Cameron reads minds; she uses her power to stay in the good graces of the popular people so she has “friends.” After moving from place to place with her grandmother because she was unable to keep her abilities a secret as a child, caving in to Emily’s every wish seems like a small price to pay to appear “normal.” When Lewis shows up at school interested in her—her! and seems to know about her power, life seems to be looking up.

My thoughts:
I just finished reading this and wish book 2 was already out!
The author does a great job of building suspense and leaves you wondering throughout the whole book - Is Aaron really the "good" guy that Lewis believes he is? I, always the cynic, thought from the start there was something fishy with him - but of course that seed was planted when Lewis and Cameron get to the mansion and there are armed guards at the "gate" to the property - - - that is never a good sign.

In a Sentence: The Mind Readers started out as a mediocre YA mystery but steadily improved to a page-turning thriller culminating in one heck of an ending.

Cameron has always been different, always been an outsider. That kinda comes with the territory when you can read minds. She has integrated herself into the “cool” crowd in high school by befriending Emily, the most popular of them all. All Cam has to do is say the right thing at the right time…and when you know what someone wants to hear, well, it’s not that hard to do.

As a child, thoughts of far-off places and adventure consistently kept Lori up late at night. After graduating high school, she came to the conclusion that there was no better way to seek adventure and nourish her love of history than to become an archaeologist. She went on to receive a degree in anthropology, but digging in the dirt during humid Midwestern summers wasn’t exactly as fun as she tho...more
