Oh... my... God! Holy...I am freaking out! This is the second installment in the Vampire Academy series. Are you kidding me?! This book looks like the last book in the series! Gosh, what will happen in the other four books? I loved this book, it was so entertaining and amazing.

The first book in this series left me feeling a big Meh. It’s confusing, nonsensical premise was distracting, though I felt in some ways it managed to distract from what was essentially a weak plot and simple story.

Oh. My. Goodness. Rose Hathaway is back, and she’s the reason we have the word BADASS. Frostbite, the second instalment in the Vampire Academy series, is rather obvious evidence that there is a real reason this series is so colossally popular.

I cannot, for the life of me, figure out what the big deal over this series is. It’s recommended all over the place, the star average for this is really good, and it’s really popular – maybe I got my hopes up too high? I read the first one, was indifferent to it, and then I heard about this series everywhere. It was a series that got better as it went along. There was character development. The heroine was multi-dimensional. Good, strong romance. Interesting characters. So, after a year, I picke...moreI cannot, for the life of me, figure out what the big deal over this series is. It’s recommended all over the place, the star average for this is really good, and it’s really popular – maybe I got my hopes up too high? I read the first one, was indifferent to it, and then I heard about this series everywhere. It was a series that got better as it went along. There was character development. The heroine was multi-dimensional. Good, strong romance. Interesting characters. So, after a year, I picked up the second one to see if I had missed something and ... eh.

On one hand, I do see some positives, like the vampire lore. Most paranormal teen books are painfully simplistic, and I’m glad to say this book does have some world building going on here. I know nothing of vampires, so when I was researching fictional creatures and came across the types of vampires that were in these books, I was quite impressed. Using real mythology to work in your story and giving your own twist on it in a modern setting? Not bad, Mead. If I’m being painfully honest, I thought she just made those words (Strigoi/Dhampir etc) up completely. But hey, come on, some authors don’t even know what happens to vampires when they walk into the sun, not naming any names.

And .... that’s pretty much what I liked.

I have to laugh when I hear the characters of Vampire Academy being called complex or “deep” – I mean really. Come on. Read a real book. I get what the attraction to Rose is – big mouthed, outgoing, snarky – the exact opposite of the whiny dish mop YA heroines we’re used to, amirite? No, let’s instead make her ANOTHER stereotype and now she’s oh-so-original! Don’t actually bother to make her a three dimensional character, that would be SO MUCH WORK. Just make her the exact opposite of the dish mop heroine, and teens will totally fall for it because she’s so speshul and different – except they DO fall for it! URGH. Rose is just so exaggerated I don’t even really hate her; there’s not enough of her to feel much of anything for. She’s just too obnoxious, too loud, too self-absorbed to really be taken seriously. And to top it off, she’s kind of an idiot. This girl is some kind of guardian for a PRINCESS and she’s about as slow as a heard of turtles racing through peanut butter. Mead has a hard time planning surprises well, because nothing comes off nearly as shocking as it is intended because any semi-discerning reader is smarter than Rose. The secondary characters are all right I guess – I like the witty remarks and all, although none of them make me laugh out loud. Still, it’s nice to have a group of teenagers speaking like teenagers for a change without quoting Latin and Shakespeare. Except Dimitri, who’s about as fun as watching “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” without a bathroom break.

Speaking of which, this series is soooo predictable. Can someone please tell me why all teen authors do this? I wouldn’t mind a love triangle, I really wouldn’t, if there was actually a point or at the very least a surprise along the way. If we have three interesting, complex characters, and you like all three of them, then a love triangle can make you ache for them. If you have a hard time choosing between the two boys (or girls, I suppose, but you never see a girl-boy-girl love triangle) then that’s a sign you did it RIGHT. If you don’t know who the girl is going to pick because both boys are so awesome and she sincerely loves them both, then you’re doing it right. WHY DOES NO AUTHOR EVEN ATTEMPT TO DO THIS? Answer: because that would actually require some tough decision making.

How do YA authors REALLY write love triangles? You’ve got the main girl, the soul mate, and the poor other guy who you know is going to either end up miserable and alone, dead, or hooking up with some secondary character you barely even remember the name of by the end. I haven’t even read the rest of the series and I don’t have to – I KNOW Rose will end up with Dimitri. I know it the way I knew Bella would end up with Edward, Clary would end up with Jace, Ever would end up with Damen, Luce would end up with Daniel, Tessa with Will, Donna with Xan ... just a few off the top of my head (some of these series aren’t done and I have no intention on reading them, but trust me, I KNOW – I HAVE NEVER BEEN WRONG YET). Even the Hunger Games, which on most days I think is a good series, was painfully obvious with the love triangle – did Gale ever really have a chance? The author can never help but hinting at who her favourite is, and when you know who the favourite is, you’ve got who the girl will end up with. When you know who ends up together, it’s boring. It makes the angst pointless and annoying to read because you know everything is going to end up alright. She’ll end up with the lame, mysterious, brooding guy, because she always does. Screw the guy with a personality and sense of humour.

(Sidenote: Have you noticed the readers always seem to like the underdog guy? I wonder why that is. Maybe the author is so busy trying to make everyone love the brooding guy, and she isn’t trying to make the other guy swoon-worthy, that his personality comes out easier. Because Brooding Guy never seems to have a personality.)

The writing is terrible by the way. I know, I know, it’s written in the narration of a rather dimwitted teenage girl, but it’s still irritating. The prologue, explaining the story so far was so corny I was grimacing the whole way through. It gets a bit better after that but everything is explained – unfortunately – through Rose, so naturally, it’s all telling, no showing, explaining the most obvious things, the vocabulary never extending past that of a sixth grader and ruining sentimental moments with cheesy, misplaced comments only a stupid teenage girl would say.

Look, it’s not the worst book in the world (silly, “Marked” is!) but I can’t slog through what, four more of these? I know what’s going to happen in the end, so I don’t see much of a point in going through hackneyed, predictable trials of these bland characters when I KNOW. Will Rose and her mother reconnect? Will Rose's father be revealed? Will Lissa end up a powerful royal? Which boy will Rose end up with? Will good conquer over darkness?

Gee, I have NO FRIGGIN IDEA.

This book was a firm reminder of why I value my time on Goodreads. Without my terrific GR friends and their ~~harrassment~~ guidance, it would have been a very long time before I attempted to continue this series - if at all.

This time around I was easily able to forget about my previous hang-ups and can see how this series is considered addicting. Once I sat down to read, I lost all concept of time and devoured this story.

I felt like the second installment was better from the first since you kind of drawn to this vampire world and you already know the structures and rules and stuff. Besides unlike the first one, the story is less like Gossip Girl wherein the story for the most part evolves in these gossips between Lissa, Rose and Mia, and well the plot kind of improved in my opinion.

This book was intense! I've already come to the conclusion that I'll read anything that Richelle Mead writes. I think that if you're a fan of either of her other two series you'd like this one a lot too, even though it's a teen series.

This doesn't read like a normal teen series though. There is some of the normal stuff that teens have to deal with; peer pressure, the requisite blond "mean girl," and sexual frustration, among other things. The difference here though is Rose is STRONG. She doesn't take crap from people, she sticks up for her friends, and she's smart. I'm sick of reading about simpering teen girls that let the popular kids walk all over them. Rose doesn't let anyone bully her, but she knows when to pick her fights and when to back down. Rose is funny too, she's such a smart ass and I love her for that.

This book picks up after the end of the last one. Lissa is still being medicated to keep her dark thoughts away and her powers tamped down. Rose has slowly caught up to the rest of the novices in her studies and is about to take a test that she should have taken the year before. She and Dimitri take a trip to visit to another guardian who will administer the test to her. When they get to the house of the guardian and the Moroi that he protects, Rose and Dimitri find everyone dead, killed by Strigoi. They go back to the academy and it's decided that there's safety in numbers so for Christmas break everyone goes to a ski lodge together. Unfortunately though, there's another attack on one of the royal families and the guardians and Moroi struggle for an answer for keeping everyone safe.

We meet a couple of new characters in this book, Adrian Ivashkov being my favorite. At times I was thinking that Rose should forget about Dimitri and just go for Adrian, but that's my love for bad boys speaking. Once everyone gets to the ski lodge, the story really picks up and the ending was pure craziness. I cried for about 10 pages near the end, it was all just really sad and intense.

I loved everything about this book, I honestly can't find any faults with it. Even though the end was sad, it didn't make me like it any less. I'm scared to read the next one though, I've heard some people say that it was heartbreaking. But I love that Mead can pull those emotions from me and I'm excited to read the third book regardless.

'Frostbite' is the second book in Richelle Meads' Vampire Academy series and it is just as good as the first. Things begin roughly where the first book finishes.

I did find Rose a little bit whiney in this book, but she redeems herself at the end by discovering a few things about herself and those around her. She matures. She also loses a very close friend to the Strigio that affects her deeply and makes her grow up quicker than maybe she would have. Her relationship with Dimitri is still simmering and it's still fun to read. Dimitri brings a mature edge to the book which I love and breaks up the bouts of teenage angst, which is a little more evident in this book.

However, Rose is still full of independence and determination and I love this about her. She also has to deal with her best friend Lissa dividing her attention and giving her boyfriend Christian half of it, which makes Rose jealous and the realisation she may not ever be able to have the same with Dimitri upsets her.

Rose also has to contend with the return of her mother. I understand Rose's anger and resentment towards her mother. She hasn't seen or heard from her in five years and Rose is mad, seething in fact, and I don't blame her.

Dhampfir women either stay at home and raise their children (and sometimes succumb to becoming a 'blood whore') or become Guardians. In the case of Janine Hathaway, she became a world-renowned Guardian and one of the best. Because of this Janine had her own Moroi to protect and therefore couldn't bring up her child.

Although, I understood Janine's motives, I felt as though Rose's feelings were pushed aside and even her friends couldn't see it from her point of view. There was really no reason why contact had to end completely for so many years. There is email and mobile phones!

Rose finds it hard to articulate her feelings towards her mother and so becomes hostile and says things in a childish way. However, by the end of the book Rose has learnt a lot and she begins to see things from her mother's point of view as well as her own.

The tension is high and the pace fast in 'Frostbite'. There's quite a bit of action too which I really enjoyed. Lissa and her relationship with Christian is also heating up, much to Rose's discomfort having found that she can dip in and out of Lissa's mind without much control as to when and finds herself in a compromising position on occasion....The relationship between Rose and Dimitri is also deepening even though they still believe they can't be together *sigh*

VERDICT:

'Frostbite' is a great second instalment and I can't wait to continue the series. I'm also falling for Dimitri big time...(less)

This is a satisfying sequel, because the thing is, Richelle Mead could have gone very obvious with Rose. It would have been easy street, and would have probably still worked, as Rose threw in a quip here and there, kicked some ass, got in trouble, got saved, learned her lesson and then got the boy.

And while Rose may do all those things, she does them in her own way and her own time and becomes a fully fleshed girl whose mistakes you might cringe at but you unders...moreThis is a satisfying sequel, because the thing is, Richelle Mead could have gone very obvious with Rose. It would have been easy street, and would have probably still worked, as Rose threw in a quip here and there, kicked some ass, got in trouble, got saved, learned her lesson and then got the boy.

And while Rose may do all those things, she does them in her own way and her own time and becomes a fully fleshed girl whose mistakes you might cringe at but you understand. That's Rose. So watching her grow, learn and change is an absolute pleasure. Everything about her you believe, whether she drives you crazy or not, you believe because she becomes that real to you.

That being said, this is another great entry to the Vampire Academy world. Lissa and Christian's relationship is another thing I love about the series, seeing two social opposites navigate a relationship. Christian Ozera is an outsider to the Royal Moroi world even though his last name sits amongst the ranks. In this story we get to see that Christian is just as much of a hero as his dhampir counterparts, and that he can hold his own on the smartass train.
Speaking of said train, this is the book where we meet Adrian Ivashkov. Standing amongst a cloud of clove smoke with a charmer's grin, Adrian brings the devil-may-care attitude to this group of teenagers that have had to grow up way too fast. Adrian pulls out all the stops with his Rose flirtations, seeing things brewing between the characters that the others can't, which adds a bit of mystery to who exactly this guy with the perfectly mussed hair is and what exactly he's going to bring to the party. Because, without a doubt, if Adrian is around there is a party not too far behind him.

Then there's my Dimitri Belikov. Who apparently also goes by Dimka. Stop stealing our heart already. Okay, i'm lying, don't you ever stop. After the end of Vampire Academy we know the feelings Dimitri is battling when it comes to Rose, which makes their interactions that much more intense and delicious. Tasha Ozera, Christian's bold aunt, is now also on the playing field as a Strigoi attack brings everyone together at a ski resort for the winter holiday, inviting a whole host of characters into the academy world. Like an unexpected family member that is going to bring the fight right out of Rose.

The stakes (excuse the pun) are even higher in this go 'round, because this fight is even more lethal than anything Victor Dashkov gave. Rose and her friends working together against a common creepy-as-hell enemy gives us our first glimpse into what these kids can do and what they've learned from the academy. Christian will surprise you. Mason will break your heart. Dimitri will steal it. Other characters will shock you, but it's fierce and it's awesome and will give you a paper cut if you're not careful.

The story picks up right were Vampire Academy left us. Rose and Lissa are still at St. Vladimir’s. Lissa and Christian are now together and Rose is still in love with her mentor/tutor, Dimitri. When a massive Strigoi attack halts everyone’s plans to travel home, St. Vladimir sends its students to a posh Idaho ski resort, so families can come together in a safe place.

At the beginning of FROSTBITE, there is a massacre of a royal family and their guardians. Rose sees the aftermath when she and Dimitri, her trainer and mentor, go to the house to meet a legendary guardian for a test Rose must take. This massacre turns the Moroi world upside down and puts everyone on full alert. The Strigoi are behind the murders. Strigoi are vampires that kill when they drink blood. They are stronger than the Moroi and strike fear in everyone. The most frightening thing about these killings though is the fact that there is evidence that humans have been involved. With humans assisting the Strigoi there is virtually no safe place for the Moroi. The daylight isn’t even a safe place to be since humans are free to move around in the sun.

With security at its highest level, St. Vladmir’s Academy makes the decision to require everyone go to a Moroi ski lodge for Christmas vacation. By keeping everyone together in one place, they are hoping to keep everyone safe. The exclusive lodge is large enough to accomodate even the students’ family members so everyone seems excited about the decision.

During this luxurious vacation news of another massacre rocks the lodge. A group of headstrong students run off to follow a lead about where a group of Strigoi are hiding and Rose takes off after them so she can bring them back. Rose has learned a lot since the last book. She has developed SOME self-control and has seen first hand what these Strigoi can do and knows her friends won’t be able to handle them.

The events that take place on her rescue mission change her perspective on life and about what it means to be a guardian. Rose’s relationship with Dimitri is as complicated as ever and provides romantic tension throughout the story. The ending is a little too quickly wrapped up with not much discussion of the deadly group of Strogoi still roaming around or the ramifications of Rose leaving the protection of the “school”, but overall FROSTBITE is even more enjoyable than Vampire Academy, the first book in the series.

Roses growth through this book is refreshing, and also seemed realistic.

I really love this series. I think it's a great series for young adults to sink their teeth into (pun intended).

I think Rose is not only a good strong heroine, but she is an honest one. She isn't perfect, she's flawed and not really afraid to admit it.

Dimitri is sexy as heck and always trying to do the right thing. I love that he, too is an honest character. He tries to do the right thing, yet sometimes gives in and does what feels good instead.

I loved both the central characters. Rose and Lissa. Though it's Rose's show all along . Lissa is major part of her life. Or let's put it that they are inter connected by bonds forged by magic .I loved understanding that bond and the mythology surrounding it. Rose's attraction to Dmitri was totally understandable. Finalmente le cose si smuovono!

Ecco quale è stato il mio pensiero a fine libro.

Devo ammettere che all’inizio ho avuto qualche tentennamento, le pene amorose di Roza (per Dimistri) stavano approdando al solito triangolo strizza cuore… diciamo proprio che ero molto diffidente.

Ecco quale è stato il mio pensiero a fine libro.

Devo ammettere che all’inizio ho avuto qualche tentennamento, le pene amorose di Roza (per Dimistri) stavano approdando al solito triangolo strizza cuore… diciamo proprio che ero molto diffidente.

Il profilo psicologico di Rose e di tutti i personaggi che le stanno intorno è decisamente curato senza scendere troppo nel melenso. Credo che questo sia uno dei punti di forza del romanzo, nonostante sia una young fantasy per teenager.

Riusciamo a immedesimarci nei panni della Mezza-Guardiana (ancora non ufficilizzata, anche se ha iniziato da un bel po’ a fare il suo lavoro a tutti gli effetti) e a comprendere le sue paure e le gelosie dettate dalla giovane età, dall’essere donna.

Molto bello e particolare è il confronto fra Rosa e sua madre. L’autrice risce da gestire con obiettività la sua protagonista mostrandoci quando sbaglia, perfino con la madre che è a tutti gli effetti un tantino assente (decisamente!).

Lo sfondo generale su cui si sviluppa la storia è a tutti gli effetti la solita scuola/accademia/riformatorio quello che c’è di bello è la cura dei personaggi, le relazioni fra loro e lo svilupparsi della “trama/intrigo”.

Vengono introdotti nuovi personaggi dai caratteri forti, ben delineati e perfettamente integrati con le “vecchie presenze” del cast narrativo.

Adrian Ivashkov è un personaggio affascinante, intrigante e ambiguo per tutta la durata del romanzo, alla fine comprenderemo, forse, il personaggio. Ci sorprenderà sicuramente.

I cattivi, gli Strogoi, sono proprio fatti bene e soprattutto per niente scontati. Anche se conosciamo bene il loro scopo finale (sterminare tutte le famiglie reali dei Vampiri) non sappiamo mai quale sarà la loro prossima mossa ed è per questo che il libro è interessante e mai noioso.

In conclusione, credo che questo libro rappresenti un esempio lampante di quanto importante sia lo stile dell’autore anche quando i temi trattati sono, magari, piuttosto sfruttati e comuni.(less)

After reading the first book in the Vampire Academy series, I could not wait to read the second one. Something new is waiting for Rose Hathaway as we find out in the first chapter. Her hatred of the Strigoi increases greatly after she learns of a horrific attack on a royal Moroi family. It puzzles her how the Strigoi, though strong, could have overcome the experienced Dhampirs guarding that family. Her desire to fight and kill the evil vampires is at its highest.

Rose seems a tad more serious in this book. I suppose it is from her brush with danger while protecting Lissa from where we left off in the first novel. Not to mention her ever-absent mother is coming along on the trip and Rose is not excited to see her. She does have her beloved quick wit, which is my favorite part of Rose’s character, just shown less often. I was happy to see her friendship with Mason grow a bit, even though she can never seem to decide what to do about his crush on her. She also has the added frustration of an older woman setting her sights on Dimitri, her star-crossed crush. This, coupled with Mason’s flattery, puts Rose in a jealous and rash state of mind.

The reader gets to explore more in depth the culture of the Moroi Royals. There seems to be a democracy among the 12 royal families although they are lead by a queen. The discussions that took place in this book set up a great deal of possibilities for the story to continue. Rose also meets another member of the Royals: Adrian Ivashkov. He is very mysterious and has a peculiar interest in both Rose and Lissa.

The action does not begin until the latter part of the book, but then good luck putting it down! Richelle Mead’s easy flowing style is once again present, much to my delight. While the first had a sort of who-done-it aspect, this one offers action and intense moments of uncertainty.

The only thing I hope to see more of in the series is more sarcastic humor from Rose to return. But Frostbite did not disappoint and I am ready and waiting for the next, Shadow Kiss, to get here!

Mason died. He freaking died! I’m still in denial. I couldn’t stop the tears. I had to chide myself for sobbing like that. He was such a great character. He was funny, full of life, brave and yet his action in the end cost him his life. His affection for Rose was the death of him. His decisions weren’t too smart either but in the end he is dead and I’m even sadder that Rose was in the book.

Rose is a very interesting character. Sometimes she makes me laugh other times I just wanna smack her for her snarky attitude. She can seriously get on people’s nerves. I like Dmitri. He is a very controlled and bad-ass God-like guardian. He knows what he’s doing and seems to be the only one who can control the Reckless Rose.
This book had so many things to deal with on the emotional front. In both the books one of the students of the Academy has died. I have so many thoughts swirling inside my head right now that I don’t exactly know what to write.
I really like how the author shows us the things that are going on with Lissa through Rose. The book doesn’t fail on the humor front and the female lead is a mix of everything. She is your typical teenager who goes through so much that you can relate to. She has crushes, she is fun-loving, she loves challenges, she likes to keep up her reputation, she wants to be bad-ass, she has her issues, but still when it comes to her being Lissa’s guardian she is damn serious and knows what she is doing. She does act reckless and annoying at times, yet when it’s time to be brave and act smart, she surprises you with her fierce determination. She gets scared like any normal person would, but she knows how to fight that fear and even come out of the worst situations. I really adore the way the author has portrayed her character and her relationship with Lissa and her mentor Dmitri and her other friends. She is a different person when she’s with each one of them.
The plot doesn’t even get boring. It keeps you thrilled and the book makes you laugh, makes you cry, leaves you speechless at times and yet in the end leaves you smiling. Although I wasn’t very thrilled by the kiss in the end because I still wasn’t and am still not over Mason’s death. It’s still a shock.
Oh well, I really hope that no more school kids die in the next book though. I hope the author doesn’t kill Christian. I’ll stop reading the series if that happens. I swear I will.

Over two years ago I started reading this series. I read the first book Vampire Academy and loved it. I don't know why I didn't continue on with the series, but I really wish I had kept reading them. We return back to St. Vladimir Academy shortly after the last one left off. Rose is still training with Dimitri and protective of Lissa. Lissa is still in love Christian and Mia is still the witch of the group. Now though, the Strigoi are getting bolder and smarter though. When they target the Royal families by working with humans, many will die, and few will make it until the end of the book.

While Rose tended to get on my nerves just a tad bit with her whining and attitude, I found that I was willing to embrace it because it is that personality that makes her Rose. Without the bad attitude, she wouldn't be the character we love. I could understand some of the resentment she had towards her Mother, but I still wanted to slap Rose at times and to tell her to show her Mother some respect. For all of her Mother's fault, she is still her Mother and a strong fighter at that.

Mason was great in this book. I really wanted him to have a happy ending, but I just didn't want it to be with Rose. Dimitri will always be the one I hope Rose ends up with no matter what. I just feel a better chemistry is evolving between Dimitri and Rose. Mason though does have some strong traits that made me swoon. I loved his loyalty to his friends, and his love for Rose felt to me to be more than just a crush. I seriously cried for hours after his final scene in the book. When Rose protected him and wouldn't let anyone near them was truly heartbreaking. In a way, I wish the author wouldn't have put me through this but I do know it was a story that helped the book progress.

Dimitri is still Dimitri. He is still sexy and fierce, but he does show a softer side in this book. I loved seeing him struggle with his emotions towards Rose. It just goes to show how much he is holding back where Rose is concerned. They both have feelings for each other, but they also know they can't act on them. When Dimitri is presented with a chance to have a different job opportunity along with a different female, I felt what Rose was feeling in her heart. I was jealous, angered, and overall disappointed at the thought of him leaving. When his decision is revealed though, it is sweet and so Dimitri.

I think I loved this book even more than the first one. The author knows how to write perfectly and makes reading the series exciting and suspenseful. The romance is sweet, hot and perfect as well with plenty of action on the battle field to keep it balanced. Another hit from a well loved author and a series that I will continue reading this time!

What I LOVED: I am really enjoying this series. The characters are engaging, especially Rose and Lissa, the storyline is well-paced and intriguing, and the issues are dealt with in very real ways that take in account their age and the unique obstacles presented in the outline of this world.
