Recommends it for: Christie fans, fans of English cozy mysteries
Shelves: mystery
No Marple. No Tuppence. No Poirot. Mon Dieu! Yet this short Christie mystery remains one of my favorites, likely due to the interesting characterization and well-crafted plot. It gradually builds tension, with a rather unanticipated but satisfying ending.

An English man and a woman become fast companions as they serve their country in Egypt. Charles is about to ship out and isn't sure when he'll get back to England, so at their good-bye dinner, he shares his feelings but refuses to ask Sophia to

One of my very favorite things about Agatha Christie is that when she said anyone could be a murderer under the right circumstances, she *meant* it. One would think that when you read a mystery, you should suspect everyone, but for most authors it just isn't true--if you read a "cozy" author, you can bet it won't be one of the charming young lovers, or the trusty narrator, or dear old Granny, or the kindly priest. With Christie, it could be any of those, or everybody, or nobody (oh yes!). It cou ...more

I’ve read several Agatha Christie’s in my lifetime, but admittedly not as many as my Cousin A. Between old Agatha and the Midsomer Murder Mystery TV series, she’s pretty much got the English Murder Mystery genre covered. SO, when she handed me Agatha Christie’s Crooked House and told me it’s the best one she’s read yet by her, I was intrigued.

Well, she was right. A non- Hercule Poirot/Miss Marple, the book moved along, however, same as usual, until the ending. I never saw it coming. And that’s s
OK, this book is CREEPY; not so much for the story, but for the identity of the murderer!

Story is set in a "crooked" little house called Three Gables, where lives a wealthy old man along with the rest of the tight-knit family, including a young, beautiful wife. He dies of poisoning under mysterious circumstances and everybody jumps to the conclusion that it must be the wife, and her assumed lover, who did him in. But did they? For, the entire family feels that these two might not have done it. B
This rocks. that's all I can say, no wonder Agatha Christie listed this as one of her favorite books that she wrote. The pace seemed slow and boring in some parts. The characters seemed flat and I didn't stick in my mind that Charles was the narrator. All this negativity but why did I rate it 5 stars? It's only because of one thing. The Ending. I can never describe how I almost did suicide after reading the ending. It was like being punched the face while getting shot through the heart. It was s ...more

In the Author's Forward, Agatha Christie states: "This book is one of my own special favourites. But perhaps the author isn’t the best judge of his or her own work. However, practically everybody has liked Crooked House, so I am justified in my own belief that it is one of my best."

So, since I adore Agatha Christie and have enjoyed and admired her work since I was a teenager, it makes me a little sad to find I can only give her "special favorite" only 3 1/2 stars. It was enjoyable, bu

Agatha Christie was my fav author when I was younger and I was in the mood for mystery. Still is.
Once I read that even Agatha didn’t know the murderer. She was writing and writing and when she was close to the finish line she was going back to chose the villain. Of course every character had a solid motive for the murder(s) so naturally in every book I was like that (from the start until the end)

I am a huge Agatha Christie (15 /09/1890—12/12/1976) fan. I have possibly all of her books, and nearly all the television and film versions of her works, starring a variety of Hercule Poirots (my best is David Suchet) and Miss Marple (Margaret Rutherford, Joan Hickson and Julia McKenzie tops). According to the Guinness Book of records, Agatha Christie is the best-selling novelist of all time. Often referred to as the “Queen of Crime,” she is also regarded as a master of suspense, plotting, and c ...more

This was an audiobook play which I thoroughly enjoyed. Between scenes they played period appropriate music and although I'm only in my 50s, I knew all but one. Wonderful.

The story itself, I had forgotten who did it and when I did it was still a little hard to take.

There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile. He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile. He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse. And they all lived together in a little crooked house.

The Leonidas are one big happy family
Christie's interesting announcement that "This book is one of my own special favourites" (from the note on the publication page) belies a relatively uninteresting story.

I couldn't find anything particularly special about this book as compared to her others. The characters were a little shallow, the relationships a little unbelievable, the narrator a little bit pompous.

Her non-Poirot novels are very hit-and-miss, I find. One my favourites of all her novels, Why Didn't They Ask Evans?, is not Poi

I am re-reading Agatha Christie and enjoying doing so very much. I have to say, doing so after so many years, is quite a funny experience and reading these books now, directly from the period they were written gives me an even better appreciation of the author. The dialogue is to "jolly hockey sticks", but delightful. This story, Crooked House, is a really goood read and proves that you don't have to attempt being to complex with the plot to have a good story-line. The story goes that the narrat ...more

I long ago outgrew my fondness for Christie's mysteries, but Agatha herself said this was one of her special favorites, so I had to give it a spin. Just for fun I decided to pick a character I thought was the killer right near the start of the book and doggedly stick with that choice regardless of the evidence. I was wrong, of course, but I would have been wrong anyway.

Now I know where Alan Bradley might have gotten the idea for his Flavia De Luce character. She has some similarities with Josep
Totally loving me some Agatha Christie right now!

Dun, Dun, Duuuuun!
I always love an Agatha Christie mystery. There's something about a classic detective story.
