i thought that these "fairy tale retellings" would all be retellings of different fairy tales with no overlap, but then some fenris from sisters red snuck in, along with the brother of silas reynolds. get outta here - this is supposed to be hansel and gretel! (or "ansel" and "gretchen" in this case) there are no wolves here! but there are. so i'm warning you. this is going to be more of a series of books in which there is free passage between the fairy tales, despit

I really enjoyed this book. I absolutely loved Sisters Red when I read it last year, so I was really excited to get reading this one. It most definitely didn't disappoint!
This book is a retelling of Hansel and Gretel. It's similar to the fairy tale, but not in a way that it's easy to predict what will happen towards the end, which can sometimes happen with retellings. I knew vaguely what was going to happen, but I had no idea how it would happen.

This great book is inspired by the classic tale of Hanzel and Gretel. Sweetly will leave you glued to your seat and biting your nails from fear. This is perfect dark and stormy night reading material. I assure you that you’ll devour Sweetly in one sitting.

Okay, I get that this is a companion novel to Sisters Red, but I wasn't actually expecting <spoiler>the Fenris to be the villains in this book as well? Werewolves in a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood make sense, but not so much in a retelling of Hansel and Gretel...</spoiler>.
Still, I liked Gretchen better than Scarlett and Rosie from Sisters Red. She seemed more well-rounded, and I admired her bravery and determination to do something to protect herself after feeling More...

I felt a lot of the same things I did during Sister's Red that I did for Sweetly (in many ways, they are quite similar) so let's get started!
I really liked Gretchen. I liked that she was a nice girl with a bit of an attitude and I love how brave and determined she was! In the face of danger, she doesn't back down, she goes up to Samuel and tells him to teach her how aim a gun and fight the Fenris and I definitely give her a round of applause there! She felt a lot more genuine to me t More...

Gretchen and Ansel are kicked out of their Stepmothers house and hit the road. Their family has never recovered from Gretchen's twin sister's disappearance in the woods when they were 7. All Gretchen can remember is the witch, and unfortunately that wasn't enough of an answer for everyone else. Their car dies in Live Oaks and they end up staying with Sophia the woman who owns the local candy store. Most of Live Oaks fears strangers, they believe that strangers convince their children to leav

THE FAERYS VIEW
Sweetly is a fantastic retelling of a classic fairytale by Jackson Pearce. Ms. Pearce has again skillfully woven a fairytale that we all know into her very own ‘sweet concoction’. The retelling of the classic Hansel and Gretel story is dark and bittersweet, like the Godiva Hot Cocoa I’m inhaling down right now. It is deliciously spooky, sweetly romantic and darkly paranormal.
I won’t rehash the book as there are so many reviews and the synopsis does a fanta More...

Review Written by Tiffany @ Reading Lark
http://readinglark.blogspot.com/2011/09/...
I've mentioned it before: I always judge a book by its cover. When I came across Sisters Red I couldn't pass it up. Plain and simple. The cover was just too cool (if you haven't seen it check it out and see if you see the wolf hiding) and the idea of putting a new spin on fairytales is always intriguing to me. Jackson Pearce has a youthful voice and, in both Sisters Red and Sweetly, she has taken we More...

First Impressions: I’ve always loved the old fables ever since I was a kid, even though most of them aren’t really meant for children in my opinion! I was terrified of wolves when I was younger partially from reading Little Red Riding Hood. Today, I love my spin-offs. I am total spin-off junkie. Christine: I adore Jackson Pearce. Honestly, if you watch even one of her vlogs, you’ll feel the same way. She’s just so cute and perky and her dog is possibly the cutest dog EVER. So of course I have to read everything she’s written. How can someone be so adorable and NOT write great stories?
With Sweetly, I think Jackson’s outdone herself. I absolutely LOVED it. It wasn’t exactly what I was expecting from reading the summary, but I like not knowing everything about a book before I r More...

There is a witch but the witch is not like the one in Monty Python. She will not turn you into a newt and you will not get better. It is much more horrible than that. The witch took one of the siblings 12 years ago, Gretchen's identical twin. Since then, Gretchen and Ansel have watched the woods and not spoken of the incident. Both of their parents have since died and the evil stepmother tired of the stepchildren and told them to move along. That's when they break down in a very small and seclud

When Gretchen was eight, she and her brother and her twin sister went looking for a witch in the woods. When they finally made their way home, Gretchen's sister had vanished. Haunted by the loss of their sister and plagued by nightmares of the yellow-eyed being who chased them, Gretchen and Ansel rely only on each other as first their mother, and then their father succumb to their grief. After being kicked out by their stepmother when Gretchen turns eighteen, the siblings travel cross-country lo

I love fairytale reimaginings. Several of my favorite recent YA novels are in this genre, from Shannon Hale’s Goose Girl to Malindo Lo’s Ash (Cinderella) to Jackson Pearce’s previous novel, Sisters Red. I don’t read enough YA to really know if this is a staple of the genre or a new trend, but either way, I am pleased.
Sweetly, which is a companion novel to Sisters Red (set in the same universe but no shared characters), doesn’t disappoint. Gretchen and Ansel, our modern day Hansel an More...

For fans (like me) who adored Sisters Red, Jackson Pearce’s new companion novel Sweetly proves a worthy follow-up in the author’s series of modernized fairy tale adaptations.
Whereas Sisters Red offered a new take on the Little Red Riding Hood tale, Sweetly is a a modern twist on Hansel & Gretel.
Pearce’s skills for adapting & modernizing fairy tales is nothing short of brilliant. It’s delightful seeing bits and pieces from the world of Sisters Red crossing over into Sweetly — More...

Years ago Gretchen's twin sister disappeared while they were out hunting for witches with their older brother, Ansel. All Gretchen remembers is a noise in the woods followed by a pair of yellow eyes chasing them and then her sister was gone. Grief killed their mother and eventually their father, and now, their stepmother has asked them to leave, so they head across the country to South Carolina in an attempt to make a new life for themselves. When their jeep breaks down outside the small town

I was given 'Sweetly' by Jackson Pearce as a prize from figment.com because Ms. Pearce choose my story (To Turn Left) to be featured on the front page. When I gained this book, I was quite thrilled. I love fairy-tale retellings. So when i started it, I was quite torn. The prologue is really good, and straight off we are given loveable characters, each with their own perk, and a foe.
Yet, from chapter one the storyline was there, but I found it wasn't as engaging as it could be.

Reading this book was an ok way to pass the time and I liked the characters. I found much of the plot unconvincing though. <spoiler> When Gretchen asks why the girls of Live Oak are only taken when they are 18, given that her sister was taken at 7, he explains it in terms of agriculture and waiting for the crop to mature, Ok, fine, But that still doesn't explain why the Fenris need Sophia to mark targets for them. They should be able to tell which girls are mature and which aren't. Sine th

Brother and sister Ansel and Gretchen are haunted by the memory of a walk they took in the woods when they were young. Lost in an unfamiliar part of the forest, Gretchen's twin sister was taken by a witch with yellow eyes. Now, years later, when their stepmother throws them out because they are of age (nineteen and eighteen), they scrap what little money they have together and leave their home in Washington state, heading toward the ocean and South Carolina, a place that Gretchen thinks will fin

Sweetly is the second installment in Jackson Pearce's fairy tale retellings. It wasn't half-bad.
Though its been twelve years since Gretchen's twin sister vanished in the woods, she has never recovered. And how could she? Piece by piece she's lost everything - her sister, her mother, her father, and now her home. She and her older brother, Ansel, have been cast out by her step mother. They drive from Washington state to South Carolina where their car breaks down before they can get to More...

Although not quite as good as "Sister's Red" this was still a wonderful book. I love seeing characters who think of themselves as weak standing up in the face of evil. Even before those they see as their protectors.
"Sweetly" delves into brother/sister pair who have been bound by grief since the day their sister is taken away from them by a witch in the forest. They watch their mother die consumed by grief and loss and then their father remarry and then die as well. As s More...

The story of Hansel and Gretel has always ticked me off. Two fat German kids roaming through the forest snacking on bread and leaving a trail so they can find their way back home to stuff their little piggy faces with more food but little do they know that Mommy and Daddy don't want them cuz they can't afford to feed them.
Or at least... that's the one I always tell ;)
And then they find this candy house and start chow dowing on it and licking all the doorknobs and royally tic More...

First I want to start off by saying that fairytale retellings isn't something that has grabbed me in the past. In fact when Little Brown Books sent this to me for review it was actually intended for Greta, not me. But then Greta said "Why don't ya read it first then send it to me? You might like it?" It's not that I have anything against the classic tales, but I've never had a desire to read one. Actually I have only ever read one before this, and that one is on the hush hush.
