Just started this, two impressions: (1) the authors did a lot of diligence reviewing relevant research and coming to independent meaningful conclusions on a very complex subject, this is not just a rehash of the work of other authors, and (2) the conclusions here seem to help reconcile conflicting findings of other authors, which in itself is a very valuable service.

One thing, when the authors draw a conclusion that differs from common received wisdom, they don't always tie it back to the spec...more

Don't let the somewhat corny title of this book put you off. This book is a wonderful and very simple introduction to real healthy eating for anyone currently eating a average-quality diet.

Great things about this book:

1. For those that just want the facts super-fast this book gives you a one page summary of the eating plan within the first 6 pages of the book. The book also contains lots of extra information backing up their conclusions as well, for those that want it.

2. This book is about eatin...more

This is a really sensible variation on the paleo diet. The authors take a very evidence and scientific based approach in their recommendations. As always, I think people should look at these things in view of their specific situation. But for people dealing with nagging health issues, even on the paleo diet, this could be a good next step.

They recommend a whole host of supplements, and we've been trying that out for a couple months. I think I then had some weight gain because of iodine supplemen...more

What I like: The authors are devoted to helping everyone be the healthiest they can be. I agree that good fats are good for you. I like how much evidence they give to back up their advice.
What I don't like: I find the advice hard to follow. Their solution is one size fits all, which I don't think works in the world where God created each of us unique. They spend a huge portion of the book talking about eliminating toxins from our diet, but don't mention eating organic foods. They recommend dair...more

These authors have done a lot of research. From all I have read, this makes sense to me, so I am going to try it! I have always sensed I need more carbs (when I am eating mostly low carb/paleo) but know that for me grains, esp. corn and wheat need to go. It's comforting to think I can have safe carbs and still feel great. I am glad doctor's are recognizing new nutritional standards and hope more and more people will follow this way of eating. Then the price of organic foods goes down, our collec...more

So far I am enjoying this book. Paleo is a very fad diet right now, and while I can see why certain aspects of it might benefit one's health, the whole "our caveman ancestors did it so it must be best" approach strikes me as a little weak. This book has gotten into the research and data about what macro nutrients to eat and why, and I am finding it interesting to read. It also debunks the whole "gorillas are vegetarian so we can be too" argument that is introduced in the much more flaky The Beau...more

This is my current thing. Yes, you do need some starches. Very technical. The ebook sample is 50 pages. I'm only following it half-assedly. Stomach lining for dinner anyone? I'm on the fence about beans, but wheat was gone already. For whatever your food plan, if you're not feeling good, you're doing it wrong. I don't know if I can fast from 8pm to noon. I have enough trouble not eating between the 8 hours of attempted sleep.

Eww!

Scientists have begun to carefully analyze the "human microbiome" a...more

Diet and nutrition books are like crack (or, if you will, sugar and flour) for me. This one was one of the best. And with the addition of a modest amount of starch (in the form of sweet potato) to my diet, I no longer get hypotensive during my workouts or tired during longer runs.

A super well researched approach to improving health via diet. By following the advice in this book, I've seen at least four "signs" of middle age disappear. If nothing else, the section on wheat will scare you off bread and pasta for life!

I read this about two years ago, gotta skim it again, but it seems like a smart approach - determining the micro and macro nutrient thresholds of necessary minimum levels and unsafe high levels, for "perfect" health.

I picked this book because I wanted to better understand how the body uses different types of food, which it did, but it also convinced me to try giving up wheat and vegetable oils and to start eating more fish and fat. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone looking to eat better.

Little odd to read as the citations were at the bottom of each page. Some pages were mostly citations. So it may take 3 or 4 pages to finish a brief thought. Felt like I was reading a research paper.
Justin
Excellent combination of Paleo and Weston A Price nutrition concepts with brief research snippets and very specific guidelines.

Beans toxic, eat butter....hmmmmm??????????????????????

This is a great book. He explains clearly how the different macro and micro nutrients affect your body and everything is WELL documented with copious references. it therefore satisfies both the casual reader and those that want more facts.

Please read this book. You owe it to yourself.

Most nutrition books do a poor job of linking to research and shy away from the science. This does the opposite and comes up with a startlingly different conclusion.

It is largely the reason why I've managed to lose 30 lbs.

Fat is not as bad as you think it is.

Best diet / biochem / health book i've ever read. Start and finish with this book. Dr Jaminet used 10,000 citations to amass the info in here. The biggest savings in healthcare can be afforded to us by just discovering and following the prefect health diet.
Laura
Ideas were really intriguing. Writing style was matter-of-fact, non-pretentious. Some of the explanations were highly scientific and hard for me to understand. Some of the footnotes were less than convincing. I look forward to reading the second edition.
Kathleen
Very scientific but fascinating nonetheless. I'm glad I got my hands on a copy because it shed light on various suspicions I have regarding my own dietary needs.

still reading this

only critique would be supplementing iodine and selenium could be risky for some with thyroid issues.

otherwise great so far. his website has great recipes too.

While not perfect, it is the best diet/nutrition book I have read so far.
In any case a good starting point for improving ones health by means of nutrition.
