Who holds the seeds to save a sky-high world?

Arborium is at risk, the sharpened blades of rival Maw poised to saw off its bark and branches. What can a poor plumber's apprentice armed with little more than a monkey wrench do to stop the chopping?

Carved into a massive, mile-high canopy, the forest kingdom of Arborium stands upon the tallest of trees. Within them, 14-year-ol...more

I thought this was a great concept for a book, until I read the first 20 pages. I'm sadly disappointed by the overall result of this book. Here's why.

1. I can't figure out if these are little one inch people living in a tree, or a HUGE giant tree grew and humans lived there. I'm assuming the first, but there are references that confuse me so I am not really sure.

2. This book would have been better if the author had spent some time on character and plot development instead of trying to force wi...more

The first book in the "Glass Forest" trilogy is a British import fantasy adventure set in a forested land called
Aborium. The story opens into the action with the hero, Ark, an average young sewage worker running and hiding
for his life after overhearing traitors plotting against the government. Thus it begins: Ark and his friends struggling to save their world. Ark must save his save his city from the evil Empire who wants to destroy their home in the trees. In Arborium, people have moved to livi...more

Ravenwood is an imaginative feast of a story. It is both a coming of age story and an epic fantasy-esque adventure set within the forested island of Arborium.

It is the story of Ark Malikum, a Dendran who lives in Arborium. The son of a plumber, Ark has now taken on his father’s job as a sewage worker keeping the pipes free from blockages. Ark’s tale begins when he overhears a traitorous plot against King Quercus. He flees in fear of his life and so begins his great hero’s story.

Star parts: Now, where shall I start? Well, for a start this is a rip-roaring plot, with the kind of pace I love. The story starts off with an amazing chase scene. By the end of chapter one, the reader is already firmly on Ark's side and plunged straight into this slightly strange tree world that is Arborium.Chapter two clears up any of those burning questions the reader might be having, such as: what's going on? and from there on, it's just pure fun, and lots of escaping death.

Arborium is obvio...more

Rating this book and writing a review have been really challenging. I loved this story, read it engrossed to the end. The world building is unique (in my reading experience, although that's probably not saying much) and very cleverly done, with the wood-related swear words and sayings. The characters are likeable and you want them to do well. The main character has a great journey and stands tall at the end. However, there is something I can't quite put my finger on about the writing style that...more

It took a little while to get into this but once I did then I found it to be a good solid read. The characters were pretty likable as well as fun(ny) plus there were characters you couldn't wait to see get theirs! After a few chapters I got to the point where it was hard to put down and was cheering Ark and his friends on as the battled to save their small kingdom.

I particularly enjoyed the running theme of conservation, that we need to stop and consider what we do to our planet before we destro...more

The cover is gorgeous. The characters are unique and interesting, and their growth seems real with the exception of a couple of places where characters do things that are very out of character and it doesn't seem quite believable. But the world is to dream about (as long as you are not afraid of heights, like me). I did struggle with the writing somewhat. I'm not sure if the author just has a unique style or if the phrasing was too British, but the writing didn't flow the way it could have.

This story takes place high up in the trees in a kingdom named Arborium, where a plumber's boy named Ark is fixing a pipe system, but echoing through the pipes, Ark hears a plot, a plot that puts everything he knows in danger.
Ark, along with his friend Mucum, must travel through Arborium to warn their king of the threat to his life, and Arborium’s as well.
There were several thing about this book that were pretty good, the plot wasn’t at all underdeveloped and is a fairly well story. One thing...more

The premise was okay; I wanted this to be good, but it was definitely a slog to get through it. The basic storyline was fine, and I finally got to enjoy some of the characters, but I'd recommend T.A. Barron's Great Tree of Avalon set if you want to read tree-dweller fantasy. The writing was wieldy and burdensome, yet many parts happened almost too quickly and were accepted far too readily by characters who did not actually seem to have the motives to back their actions up. I enjoyed the final sc...more

Pros: Good characters - I particularly liked Mucum, Shiv, Joe, & Flo.

Cons: Too long. Sometimes a bit boring. The tree puns get annoying. The battle scene is awfully gruesome for something that seemed (until that point) like an upper-elementary school title. (I really don't want to see people snapping other's necks by stepping on them. Yuck.)

Major beefs: I was conflicted on how the characters and settings might look, because:

1. The book is full of descriptions and explanations of the sewer s...more

Thankfully, I am finally finished with this book! It took FOREVER!

Honestly, I did not like this book. I gave it two stars instead of one because I only give one star to books that are just not functional. This book "makes sense," if only in the most basic way: there are no obvious flaws in the logic of the plot, and sadly I have read books that do lack such basic components.

I was excited when I saw this book at my school's bookfair (I'm a school librarian). I liked the cover and it just sounded...more

Ark is but a lonely sewage worker. He's taken over as head of the house since his father has fallen ill. Mucum works alongside Ark in the sewer, but they aren't really friends. They both live in Arborium, high up in the sky in trees. Maw is the ground, a city devouring the world with its towering metal and glass skyscrapers. When Ark is fixing High Councillor Grasp's toilet and overhears a plot to overthrow the King between the Councillor and someone from Maw he accidentally makes a noise that l...more

I liked this one. The worldbuilding was really neat. Some have criticized it for not explaining the world, but the author slowly releases that information throughout the novel. By the end, you get the whole picture and it makes sense. Nice little message wrapped up in there for us too as far as the world-building goes.

It was funny in parts and it was a completely unique fantasy world, not much like any I had seen before so mad props for that.

Hmmmm. Great cover. Interesting and different world. Adventure and war. Somehow just didn't draw me totally in. I know that when I get confused when characters have names that start with the same letter and I get them confused. It was long and had tiny print. Ark, 14, a plumber's apprentice in the forest island of Arborium, overhears a plot to destroy his land. Has he found his true destiny?

I really liked the story of this book. It was original and interesting. The thing I didn't like was all the talk of "squit". I felt ill a few times because of the book's content. I don't know why this got such poor reviews, I think it's worth reading

Couldn't do it. The book has been sitting on my shelf for awhile, but I haven't been in the mood to read it. I tried reading this with my middle-schooler, and he honestly lasted longer reading it than I would have on my own. The story is a bit disjointed and confusing and just doesn't capture the attention.

Ravenwood to me was an exhilarating experience.I loved it because It was just the right amount of suspense , characters to hate and love , action , and love.I give this book a five out of five. Andrew Peters has accomplished something (:

Read this as a manuscript for a lit scout. Great world, but felt it was a bit too violent for it's age group.

Sorry I took so long to read this, Janan. Still pretty good. Nature vs Technology with some magic added in.

I think this is a good book. There is always something interesting happening.

At the beginning it was truly amazing, but the ending messed up everything. It feels like the author either lost interest in the story or he is just unable to write when many things happen at the same time. I just don't like the fact that a bunch of ordinary kids saves the kingdom and everything they do works as they've planned. Very naive.

Really really good! I enjoyed the twists and turns, and humor and play on words. Fun read :)

It took me a long time to get into Ravenwood. The world didn't grab me right away. And it reminded me of so many other books that I have read. But it intrigued me enough that I kept on reading, and I am glad I did. The last third of the book was much better than the beginning. Ark was a decent main character but his sidekick Mucum was my favorite. And Joe and Flo from the underground tribe of Rootshooters were wonderful. Overall this would probably be a fun fantasy adventure for kids 5th grade a...more
