A fascinating dramatized fiction of the life and times of Jules Bonnot, his 'gang', and associates, the individualist anarchists of the time, including the young Victor Serge. An affectionate, past-paced, but historically accurate account of the life of the extraordinary Bonnot - worker, soldier, auto-mechanic, driver to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle - a man with a long cherished...more

I read this book while hitching and stranded in a small town in Ohio. It was pouring rain, and I alternated between the front of a BP/McDonalds slowly getting soaked and the side of the interstate where I was completely drenched by the mist of passing 18-wheelers despite my rain suit.

I liked this better than Larry Law's The Bonnot Gang, and I think it does a much better job of letting us know what the gang was like, despite (or maybe because of) this being a fiction and the other a non-fiction....more

This is a semi-fiction book about the French anarchist Jules Bonnot who also happened to be the driver of the first ever get-away car. I say semi-fiction because it's based pretty factually on Bonnot's life but written as a novel. It's an engaging page-turner as well as an informative piece about anarchism during that period of time. It influenced me to the point that I coined the term "a Jules Bonnot moment" to describe any situation where there are no winning outcomes.

This book is very poorly edited, but the story is so good that you don't even care. Unlike The Bonnot Gang, this account of Jules Bonnot's life is written as a novel. The events are all true, but some of the dialog and discussion between characters is improvised. It documents the rise and fall of "illegalism" in French anarchist circles, and provides great insight into anarchist history and anarchist trends of the time. Epic.
Matty-Poo
an engrossing semi-fictionalized account of a band of early 20th century french "illegalists" and their struggle for against police, society, and even their own comrades. also secretly a love story. or many love stories. also they stole cars to use for get away vehicles to rob banks.
Don
Though horribly edited and poorly written, the story of Bonnot makes the book compelling.
