The Awakening is the first book in Christine Feehan's leopard series. As short novels go, this one does not disappoint.

Explorations. Adventures. Lust. Attraction. Uncertainty. Shame. Shape-shifting.

Adopted at a very young age, Maggie is recently contacted by an attorney that informs her of property owned by her birth parents. Curious as to her inheritance, Maggie leaves the city behind and trucks her way through the rainforest with guides that seem as nervous as she.

She knew something or someone...more

I’ve read one or two of Feehan’s books but haven’t been overwhelmed by them. My admittedly vague memory is one of an overly dramatic and wordy book. Since this is an audio and a novella and it was free for download on my local library website (bonus!) I figured I’d give her another try. The only thing I had to lose was a little time.

Actually it turned out to be a decent enough read. Maggie, a veterinarian of exotic cats, has always dreamed of working in the wild but settled for a zoo job. When s...more

This is a short prequel to one of Feehan's series about shapeshifters. I rather liked this story! The descriptions of the jungle of Borneo - with all its verdant lushness and noisy bird racket and tropical flowers and hot humid rain - really got to me. I recycled today at work and thought of this story. No, serious, the book is not about environmentalism, although the characters in the stories are protectors of the jungle and its creatures. I'm also rather glad that I haven't read any of the lat...more

I usually find that the first book in most series can be a little slow as the author develops the setting, not this one. It hit the ground running and that's the way it stayed. This book is not erotica yet it is incredibly erotic, scenes involving mangoes and ice where extremely sensual. I don't think anyone can write chemistry the way Christine Feehan does. There is just something about the way she writes that makes your emotions run high. I highly recommend this quick and easy read, I can't wa...more

While as usual this story would have been great it was longer it was a pretty good story and a great introduction into a new series. I am not going to be able to say much about the story without giving away the story. I loved Brandt Talbot very much. He is a caring, passionate, intelligent and dominant man. He wants to keep his home and people safe from all those that want to destroy the rain forest. He is very gentle and caring with Maggie Odessa. Overall he is a wonderful man that needs the ma...more

2.5 Stars Rounded Up to 3 -- Short enjoyable read but somewhat disappointing.

I've read tons of Christine Feehan books. By tons I mean almost all. Because I'm such a huge Christine Feehan fangirl, I've read this exact story line dozens of times ("Fated" Mate, Alpha/Over-protective male, confused heroine discovering new powers, a supernatural instinct that drives an unlikely couple together). It's what I expect from Ms. Feehan's books and why I love her.

The problem with The Awakening is that I've...more

Thinking I would give this author another shot even though I hated her vampire series.

The whole book is an handy excuse for gratitous sex.Wich is not sexy at all.

And the flimsisest of characterization and a weak plot.

Meh I say.

Complete waste of time. No plot. More like a porn film where they have to say a few lines so that they can have sex again lol!

A rushed, rushed, rushed excuse for sex scenes.

I agree. Just an excuse for writing about sex. Barebones, rushed plot and conversation. Definitely felt more like a short story than a "novella," and a poorly written one at that. The main character met and discovered her true soul mate (not a shred of lingering doubt), and rushed into full-time sex within about 24 hours... left me feeling unsettled and totally creeped out.

I read this simply because it was there. (I had been looking for a really qu...more

A bit disappointing but filled with alpha leopards and jungle dangers.

Description:

In this Penguin eSpecial, under the blazing heat of the Borneo sun, a beautiful naturalist's dream comes true--to live among the feral jungle creatures. But an untamed, irresistible beast of another sort forces her to explore her own wild side.

My Thoughts:

I listened to this book on Audio and to be honest the narrator may have influenced my take on the book. Her voice was light and made both the heroine and the alph...more

This short book was more world building for Feehan's Leopard Series than anything else. There wasn't much romance - a slight bit of erotica (mangoes and ice in the hot rain forests in Borneo...interesting) - a lot of ink spent on environmentalism, and no character depth or anything else in the book.

Brandt is the leader of the leopard pack that lives in the Borneo rain forest in Indonesia. Maggie is supposed to be his mate - he tracks her down, manipulates the situation so that she come...more

I actually read this story in "Fever," the compilation of #s 1 and 2 in the series. It's a good thing the two were in one book together, because I actually would have dropped it immediately if I'd just based it on this one. It is beyond ridiculous. Feehan is overwhelmingly wordy. She'd go on for paragraphs at a time describing a bird in a tree or the flower on the ground. I honestly would skip full paragraphs, just to get back to the story.
Fortunately, since I'd checked Fever out of the library...more

Interesting novella that piqued my interest to the rest of the series, not because I thought it was so good but because I felt like I was missing something and I don't like feeling like I'm not in the know. It was a quick read, but I felt like it shouldn't be a first book but a book to read after you've already started the series if that makes any sense.

The jury is still out on whether or not I continue this series. We'll just have to see.

Not too bad for a shorter book. I loved the Carpathian series, I hope this turns out to be a good series. I will never look at mangos, oranges, and. Ice again. Haha
melissa
not sure if it was me, but i don't know if i got an abridged version, but this one was missing sometime. like a plot. it wasn't really until part 3 out of 3 that something happened. the first 2/3rds was just romance and sex. which is fine, not unexpected, but better with a little plot mixed in. but, as a girl who is struggling to read (or do much else) right now, it passed the time well enough...

Now I accidentally read book 5 in this series prior to this book so I know it gets better!!! As a first book it's not bad, if feels young and untried but the idea is great and well thought out. It's a short first book more like one you would see in a compilation book, I enjoyed it but won't be too generous with my stars... Well maybe a little generous... Onto the next...

Final horrible! No me gustó T_T

i loved this book her stiries are great

This is the 1st book of the Leopard people series. It's a short story/ introduction to the team of shape shifting alpha men sworn to protect the rain forest. These men are hot, muscular, leopard shape shifters.

This was a great introduction to the characters that continue through out the series.

I really did not care for this it felt rushed which considering it is a novella I should have expected it but all in all I just was not impressed the characters where kind flat the only thing I will say is I do love the plot of people shifting into animals other then that it was all kind of a let down.

This book was very short and just "okay" in my eyes. There was a lot of erotic talk (which I don't usually mind, but there must be a plot as well, and I felt like there wasn't much of one here.) I will read the rest of the series just because I want to know what happens.
Staci
This is a good but short introduction to the leopard people series. The heroine's eventual physical change matches quite well with the sexual awakening she undergoes as well and the heroine is a good mix of feminine and feminist.
Stacie
Short story about Brandt who can change into a panther. He lures Maggie into his world with the rain forest because he can sense that she is his mate. She was adopted and does not realise that she is one of his people.
Stacy
I think the storyline was awesome and could have made a real fine book but the sex seemed more the point of the book, which I thought was a shame, anyone can write porn, but a fine new storyline is a treasure

What can I say, I love Ms Feehan's books.

This is the beginning of the Leopard People series she did not disappoint, full of excitement and sexual action.
Great read.......

Christine is one of my faviourite authors and in this series she is still keeping to form. Thanks.

I loved this short story about the leopard people.
Taria Reed
A nice introduction to the Leopard People books. I really wish Christine Feehan would give a balanced POV in her stories.
