The summer of 2008 I got into reading the shojo manga series, Nana by Ai Yazawa. I tore through volume 1 and volume 2 and volume 3. Unfortunately for posting reviews, my reading for fun often takes a back burner for challenges and books sent for review. I am trying now to change my priorities to bring the fun back into book blogging.

I'm completely addicted to Ai Yazawa's shojo manga Nana. Nana is the story of two young women, both from small towns, who meet on the bullet train and end up moving in together in Tokyo. Nana Komatsu (a.k.a. "Hachi") is a small-town girl who has big city dreams of romance and leaving her old life (and self) behind, while Nana Osaki has come to Tokyo to try to find success as the singer of her (psuedo) punk rock band, Blast. This all sounds like pretty standard fare so far, but once

Overall Rating: A

Shoji is a bit of an ass and Nana #1 is getting on my last nerve. What the hell is going on with Yasu and Nana #2?

It took me forever to pick up the first book. Now I can't stop reading them.

This volume is so good! I think that the story is even more compelling now that the characters have been fleshed out.
I love the way Yazawa conveys mood with her graphics - she does such a great job of switching between moody/dramatic/melancholic and zany.
I think for a while my opinion of Yazawa's character designs was a little up-in-the-air (both Nanas have ginormous foreheads!), but the details of their outfits and the background art combined with the deft manipulation of More...

The two Nanas are settling down in Tokyo, and some major changes are starting to happen. Knowing them, they'll deal with the trauma the ways they know best: writing songs and crying. But it'll all be okay in the end, because when they have one another they can do anything. Great girl-power manga, very funny!

Getting better, and I have to admit I am enjoying it enough at this point but jeez: DRAMA DRAMA DRAMA. I think I liked Mars better because THE DRAMA ended in 12 or so issues and I know NANA goes on past 17 or something. I don't mind drama but prefer it not to get to soap opera status. Issue 4 is on my shelf however and I'm sure it will hook me to 5.

I read 3 of these to meet my 50 books by the end of the year, even if it's sort of cheating. Something about this series has be drawn in. I think a teenage girl could better sympathize with Nana's problems, but I enjoy the storyline.

This series is addictive. It reads a bit like a journal. I feel like I am "in" on all of these great moments and stories that come from friendship.

Nana and Hachi's adventures continue in this likable installment. Has the demon lord got Shoji in his grasp? Find out!

Volume 3 and I'm still loving it. Cliff hanger at the end for those that have not seen the movie.
