Back in July I reviewed the first volume of the shojo manga, Nana by Ai Yazawa. I had been interested in it since Amazon had recommended it to me but I didn't start the series until Dewey also recommended it.The series is rapidly becoming one of favorite "guilty pleasures." I plan to review more in the series over the course of 2009.

I'm completely addicted to Ai Yazawa's shojo manga Nana. Nana is the story of two young women, both from small towns, who meet on the bullet train and end up moving in together in Tokyo. Nana Komatsu (a.k.a. "Hachi") is a small-town girl who has big city dreams of romance and leaving her old life (and self) behind, while Nana Osaki has come to Tokyo to try to find success as the singer of her (psuedo) punk rock band, Blast. This all sounds like pretty standard fare so far, but once

I have mixed feelings about this volume. I love the interaction between the two Nanas but their individual conflicts and character flaws come off kind of cliche and dull. I keep hearing that the character development is the serie's success but I don't feel hooked yet. I'll give volume 3 a chance.

Both Nana's have such addictive personalities! Their private lives are completely separate and different, but I couldn't help but feel that they're somehow the same lives. Crazy thought, am I right? It's rather interesting how these two people met by chance. I love this series so far!

I liked this volume a bit more than the first (however I had to go back to the first volume and re-read some), these manga's are sort of high-matinence and very witty. I think sometimes you have to read some of the jokes again to understand (or for me at least). Still very good, though!

i am desperately afraid that Nana and Nana will become a couple. which would really suck. i would hate that, and i'd stop reading this. I see them as sisters, so that would be an ouchie. but it's a cute manga [for now:], and my favorite character is Nobu.

This continues to be adorable. And I laughed at how the "Naive Nana sees Ren's poster in the record store" echoes the Knives/Envy/Scott dynamic in Scott Pilgrim. (Though funnier because it turns out she doesn't actually CARE about Ren).

Shoujo manga. One of the first in this genre that I've read so I don't have much to compare it to, but I liked it. It's a series so you really should start with volume 1 and go through incrementallly.

Haha, le "roi des démons", mais quelle théorie!
Et moi, qui pensait qu'il n'y aura plus de Blast..
Je suis contente de savoir que ce n'est que le début de ce groupe :D

Absolutely fantastic. During the first volume I could not figure out why Nana is so well respected. The story was ok, the characters were normal, and the plot seemed to be nothing special. However, volume two has completely blown me away. The friendship between the two Nana's is incredibly entertaining and touching. The dialog is very unusual, and compelling. I love the art, and the way photographs are used as some of the backgrounds. This is a manga unlike any other I have read, and I can't wai

After the somewhat slow start in volume one, this is where the story really gets going as the two Nanas meet each other. Their friendship is the heart of the series; it becomes the thing their lives center on while other relationships come together and fall apart, and while the friendship itself goes through a huge array of change. This is a gorgeous, heartbreaking story about very believable, deeply messed-up people trying--with very mixed success--to make their way through life.

the two nanas decide to move to tokyo, and end up sitting next to each other on the train. they talk the whole way there, even when the train is delayed by snow. at the train station, they go their separate ways but meet again serendipitously when they are both taken to see the same apartment. after fighting over it, they decide to become roommates and a strange friendship is born...

This series takes a definite upturn when Nana O. and Nana K. meet, if only because they play so well off of each other. Nana K. turns from cute and flirty to calculatingly cute and distressingly promiscuous. Nana O.'s punk rock attitude and hidden vulnerability show up in stark relief against her roommate's larger-than life personality. The art continues to be original, yet strong.

Every bit as good as volume one. I really like this series and I look forward to reading the 3rd one. Damn my addictive personality. I'll probably have to read them all.

Nana Komatsu and Nana Osaki meet up on a train...and while looking at a seventh-floor apartment! It's fate! Or is it just the demon lord...?
