Better than the previous two, in my humble opinion. More world building, some new faces, more information, some character growth…

After three books, I am giving up on trying to decide how I feel about the characters. I just accept them the way they are and you know what? Now that I’m writing things down, they feel like real life people. There is no perfect character. So, I’m done complaining.

I don't want to read this series anymore but I want to know what happens. Sort of a conundrum, huh? My main problem: I don't care what happens to any of the kids. They're whiny, annoying, poorly developed, and they do really stupid things. Claire, the supposed genius, does the dumbest thing anyone can do; she reveals to the villain that she figured out it was them killing people while she's STUCK IN A MOVING CAR ALONE WITH THEM!!! Sorry. Had to get that out. Claire needs to watch some horror mov...more I don't want to read this series anymore but I want to know what happens. Sort of a conundrum, huh? So, what was this book about? Not a whole lot. The plot is very similar to the previous books: Eve dresses up Goth and whines, Shane mopes and broods and gets in fights, Michael mopes and feels misunderstood, and Claire complains that she's not a kid while getting into the worse possible situations she can get herself into.

And why does Claire help out the bitch Monica and her friends with ANYTHING? Yeah, she sort of gets blackmailed at one point, but helping out Monica's friend with her homework, seriously? In Glass Houses THEY PUSHED HER DOWN A FLIGHT OF STAIRS! I understand that if Claire hadn't been in Common Grounds, certain events wouldn't have played out, but figure out a more plausible reason to get her there, Caine!

And I'm getting sick of Shane and Claire's dry-humping. Shane claiming he made a promise to her parents and his word means something is ridiculous. Give me a break. If he was so honorable he wouldn't go around picking fights and being a smart-ass to everyone he meets. If these were real kids he would have boned her already, age be-damned. Or they would be doing EVERYTHING except actually having sex.

The one thing saving this series though? The vampires. Especially Myrnin. Myrnin is a crazy old vampire locked in a basement filled with books and contraptions. He works for Amelie and she sends Claire to help him out because Claire is super smart. He's funny and insane and the bright spot in this boring novel. I wish the vampires were the main focus and the kids were the side story because both Myrnin and Amelie are underused.

I'm still having the same problem with this series that I've had from the beginning; Caine has some great ideas but she executes them poorly. I don't feel emotionally attached to the characters and I could care less if they live or die. And the end? What the hell? The book doesn't end with a cliffhanger, it ends mid-scene. This is such a terrible way to end a novel and it makes me want to throw it against the wall!

I've got friends telling me this series only gets better, so I should keep reading. Really, when does it get better? Please tell me. I think I'll read the next book when I want a reason to be pissed off. Maybe if my expectations are super low I'll be surprised.(less)

First Impressions: Once again, this book was better than the previous one. It's easily my favorite in the series so far. In Midnight Alley, we get to see more development of the characters (especially the vampires!) as well as the results of the big decision Claire makes at the end of Book 2, The Dead Girls' Dance.

What about Midnight Alley made it better than the first two? Overall, I enjoyed the plot a lot more. I think Rachel Caine shows off her creativity in this book, more so than she has be...more

Claire has signed the contract with Amelie, which makes Claire Amelie's slave in blood, body and soul, in order to keep her friends and herself safe from certain people - like, let's say, Oliver. Now everyone - everyone human, that is - is being nice to Claire, even Monica and her minions.

The third book in the Morganville Vampires series picks up where book two left off. One thing that you need to know about the Morganville series is that they aren't stand alone books, so if you haven't read the first two books in the series, this one won't make much sense. When we last saw our favorite housemates, Shane's father and his biker buddies rolled into Morganville to kill vampires. In order to protect her friends, Claire signed a contract pledging herself to Amelie.

When Midnight Alley begins, Claire still hasn't told her roommates about her deal with Amelie. She is afraid of their reaction and doesn't want to add more tension to an already tense house. Although Eve and Claire have adjusted to the fact that Michael is a vampire, Shane is having a very difficult time. Even worse, Amelie forces Claire to study alchemy with Myrnin, a deranged vampire. The secret Claire finds out has the potential to alter the lives of everyone in Morganville. Michael is outed as the town's newest vampire, putting him in danger, and Eve's brother gets out of jail, expounding the problems the characters face.

The most important new character we are introduced to in this story is Myrnin. He is a very old vampire, who is lucid for increasingly smaller amounts of time. When he is lucid, he is very charming and engaging. However, when his lucidity fades, he becomes angry and confused. I definitely had sympathy for him throughout the book. He knows he's deranged, but there is nothing he can do about it. I'm eager to see what happens in future books as Myrnin and Claire's friendship grows. I can easily imagine Myrnin falling for Claire, which would be quite an interesting situation.

Claire also continues to mature, learning that Morganville isn't simply a town divided. There are vampires that look at more than humans as just a meal, and humans who will do anything for prestige and power. The lines between good and bad blur, adding to the moral dilemma she faces (you'll have to read the book to figure out what it is). Her relationship with Shane continues to progress, although he is still very careful to keep the physical lines in tact. It is a constant frustration to Claire, but shows an impressive level of maturity for Shane.

Speaking of Shane, he is having a hard time accepting the fact that Michael is a vampire. After the death of his sister and mother, Shane has hated all vampires - to the extent that he came back to Morganville to help his father carry out his mission to kill them. However, Michael is his best friend - it's not easy to hate someone you've known most of your life. Shane seems to be growing less than the other characters, which makes me wonder what the author has in store for him in the future. I think he has a lot of potential if he could just let go of some of his anger and put that energy towards making positive changes in his life.

Midnight Alley does a good job of moving the plot of the series forward and giving the reader more insight into some of the more mysterious characters, like Amelie. Michael, Shane, Claire and Eve continue to adjust to their roles as roommates, friends and players in the vampire politics of Morganville. If you enjoyed the first two books in the series, I think you will love the third installment. I give it four out of five fangs!(less)

I have not had so much trouble finishing a VAMPIRE book in my life. I mean the story in the beginning leaves a lot to be desired, and it only starts getting good AT THE VERY END. The only parts I could say I really enjoyed where the parts where Myrnin, the vampire tutor, appeared. Now he was interesting.

Another thing is I have a big problem with Shane. For being the main characters boyfriend, I think she can do a lot better. He is just not that interes...more

While I enjoy the books, sometimes I find myself bored at parts. Granted, most of the time I’m completely interested, but occasionally I just want the book to be over.
I like the storyline. It’s interesting enough, although it’s getting more complicated as the books progress. Things are changing and altering and beginning to really take form. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a town like Morganville....more Okay, I’m going to be honest here, I like this series.....but I don’t love it like I was expecting to. While I enjoy the books, sometimes I find myself bored at parts. Granted, most of the time I’m completely interested, but occasionally I just want the book to be over.
I like the storyline. It’s interesting enough, although it’s getting more complicated as the books progress. Things are changing and altering and beginning to really take form. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a town like Morganville. The way the vampires have control and order the humans around is disturbing and I hate how they “own” them like they do. I’d certainly never want to live in Morganville. That’s for sure.
I think Claire is a good heroine. I like following her around and seeing her face new things and discover new things. She’s a normal girl, not too strong, not too weak....just perfect. Although I must say there are moments where I wanna knock her over the head for her stupidity and all that, but for the most part I really dig her. I like watching her begin to stand up to the likes of Monica and some of the vamps. She’s not the scared little girl she was in the first book.
And Shane. I really wanna knock some sense into him at times. I like the guy and all, I do, but I want him to get over the issues he has with Michael. Michael has been his best friend for a long time and I’d expect him to know better than to think that becoming a vampire necessarily changes him or makes him a bad person. It doesn’t. And the sooner he realises that the better. I want the Shane back from the first book--I miss him!

In case it’s not clear enough.....Michael is my honey. I loooove the guy! Like extra, anyone messes with him and I’ll help Eve kick their butts love. He’s my fave character in the series so far and I live for moments with him. He’s such a good, honest, great guy...and it’s got nothing to do with the fact that he’s a vampire. I adore how he takes care of everyone and how he has a big brother relationship with Claire without it being anything more. It’s a simple honest friendship where there are no hidden agendas or extra feeling to complicate things. It’s not something you see enough.
He and Eve are just too cute. Yes, I love Claire and Shane as a couple too--I really feel like their relationship is becoming stronger and better, but I think I like the gentleness and tenderness that Michael and Eve have in their relationship more.
Grrr. Can I stake Amelie? Please, please? I know it won’t hurt her, but it’ll make me feel better. Honestly that woman—ah, vampire...whatever, is so annoying and mean. Where does she get off? Allowing Myrnin the chance to eat Claire because she had no more use for her, that’s just cruel. And her father.....well, I’m sure he’ll be even worse.

Midnight Alley starts to move the story along a bit. To keep a series going there needs to be some evolution and the black and white world of vamps = bad and human = good is starting to slip. Claire finds herself worrying about the wellbeing of certain vampires and Eve's brother has been let out of prison and is up to no good. Claire also gets to learn a little about the world of alchemy and what is really lurking down that alley. Probably the best yet, so gets a shiny four stars.

This isn't a nice review. However I actually don't mind the books...

Rachel Caine's writing drives me mad. And not in a good way. From a story/facts point of view she's brilliant but she just cant execute it correctly and her poor writing lets down her good ideas. I'm on book 3 for Christ sake and yet I still don't feel a connection to a single character. But with Myrnin suffering the same condition, Clare's safety is in jeopardy. Sadly his students are not part of the living anymore, or the dead in Morganville's case. Let's say they are part of the normally dead.

Well, at some point Myrnin recognizes he no longer has control, for his sickness has overcome him. At the same time, Clare has been ingesting a little too much of a compound created by Myrnin, that gives her clarity of mind and basically opens her mind to tons of knowledge but that little by little deteriorates her. Then Clare has to apply all that theoretical knowledge and with a dash of cleverness she survives the mess she is in.

At the ending,an interesting set of guests arrives at the Glass house. We all know, guests are not goodwill ambassadors on that little corner of Texas.

Finally, we know who is the crazy creature on the alley mentioned in the previous books. I liked that connection. Myrnin is a character that has a big potential in the series. I hope to get to understand this character. I think it would be a highlight in future books,to read about who he used to be before the sickness.

The story gets more complicated for the group. Michael is a vampire, Shane is still in a not so good standing in the community and Clare is in a great deal of stress. This storyline kept me on the pessimist side of things. Constantly thought that simply only a miracle could resolve things. Let's say things ended ok...until a strange new character arrives at the door waiting to be invited in. What would you do? Would you invite him in?

This book reassured me that I am not going to continue to end up in disappointment. I plan to keep reading about Morganville Vampires, but I don't think I am a fully converted fan girl just yet.

Myrnin is a much more appealing addition to the series, and I hope he makes a reappearance in the next one. Ich finde das Band 3 ein wenig geschwächelt hat. Nach drei Bänder ist man es irgendwie leid das Claire immer in die Fallen der Bösen läuft, hallo die sind so offensichtlich und wie Geisha X es schon geschrieben hat "she mimed fangs on the neck" steht einmal zu oft dar. Besonders das sie dann auch noch anfängt "Drogen" zu nehmen ist dann doch ein Tick zu viel. Man nuss es nicht gleich übertreiben.

Claire hat für mich in diesem Band einen Schritt rückwärts gemacht. Sie belügt ihre Freunde und verheimlicht ihnen eine Menge und nicht mal Shane den sie ja liebt erzählt sie etwas, hätte Michael ihr Geheimnis nicht herausgefunden hätte sie es den Anderen nie erzählt. So mag ich sie nicht. Eve wird für mich immer mehr und mehr zur Randfigur und hat keine wirklich wichtigen Szenen.

Bei Oliver bin ich mir immer noch nicht sicher was er eigentlich will und auf welcher Seite er steht. Amelie hat gezeigt wie kaltherzig sie wirklich ist, ich meine sie hätte Claire einfach so an Myrnin verfüttert, weswegen meine Sympathie mehr zu Oliver schwenkt. Amelie interessiert sich nur für ihre Leute und selbst da macht sie Ausnahmen.

Fazit: Meiner Meinung nach ist Band 3 nicht so spannend wie Band 1 und 2. Es geht halt die meiste Zeit um Myrnin und Claire und ob sie erfolgt haben. Es gibt zwar auch wieder die Claire/Shane und Michael/Eve Momente, aber es ist halt all das was man schon kennt. Der Cliffhanger am Ende hat mich schon ganz gespannt auf Band 4 gemacht!!(less)

This is book 3 in the series. It picks right up from book two, with no big gaps, or time change. Claire and her friends have all had to make big decisions to stay alive.This includes a change for both Michael and Claire. No spoilers...The change in Claire and Michael cause some problems at home, especially for Shane who has come to love Claire, and also his feeling toward Michael. The biggest problem though is who Claire has for a new tutor. He is not exactly stable, and has fangs. He is brillia...more

The very first thing I want to mention is that I think the blurb is wrong. It mentions a stalker resurfacing from Claire's past, right? Well I've read this book twice and the only stalker I can think of is Jason, Eve's brother, which would mean that it should be Eve on the blurb, not Claire. I don't know, maybe I've missed something really obvious, or I'm reading too much into it. But whatever. This book was just as fantastic as the first two in the series. Rachel Caine's writing keeps getting better and she certainly knows how to keep you hooked right from the off.

We have one new character that I want to mention: Myrnin. I love this guy. He's one of my all-time favourite characters and I can say with complete certainty that I'm glad he's a central character in the future books. I'm not sure this series would be the same without the wacky vamp. He's hilarious and, admittedly, a little scary at times. Myrnin's very well-rounded and you'll love him too - guaranteed. I also want to take a moment to talk about Michael. I've read a lot of reviews about this book and the second in the series where people do nothing but complain about his decision to become a vampire. I don't see the problem. I've read this series twice and I think it worked. It was a very bold thing for Rachel to do and I admire her for it. Michael as a vampire brings up a lot of potential for many subplots and I can't fault any author for surprising their readers.

This story revolves mostly around Claire's contract with Amelie. It's through her that Claire meets Myrnin and thus learns that there's a little problem with vampire life - it's killing them. Yay? Though Claire can't say that will be a huge loss, she has to admit that if the vamps die, so do Michael and Sam. Uh-oh. Conflict. The best part of this book is that Shane is no longer locked in a cage, so we get to see him more. Hoorah! Oh, and the ending is fantastic. It was pretty funny for a little while, until it wasn't anymore. I feel bad for Claire, but I can guarantee Amelie is the one deserving sympathy.

How can the front of these books say "Dump Meyer's Twilight books and replace them with Morganville"? The series is about STEREO TYPE VAMPIRES! I hate STEREO TYPES! Morganville doesn't even deserve a capital letter! If you like The Twilight Saga, I would advise you not to read these books.

In this book, the gang is still trying to accept the fact that Michael is a vampire and no longer a partial ghost. Shane is still not okay with it. Claire is trying to hide the fact that she pledged herself to Amelie for her friend's protection. Here, we also met Myrnin. A very old vampire locked in a laboratory to seek for a cure for vampires' illness. He is crazy most of the times. Claire was forced to be his apprentice by Amelie putting her life in danger.

Die Gefahr die von Shanes Dad ausging ist erst einmal gebannt und alles nimmt wieder seinen Lauf. Claire hat ihren Freunden noch immer nicht erzählt das sie einen Vertrag mit Amelie abgeschlossen hat und hat auch nicht vor dies in nächster Zukunft zu ändern. Doch es wird immer schwieriger diesen Umstand geheim zu halten und das nicht nur, weil sie das Erkennungszeichen der Gründerin an ihrem Arm tragen muss, sondern auch weil diese ihr eine wichtige Aufgabe aufgegeben hat: Sie soll von Myrnin, einem der ältesten Vampire Morganvilles und ein guter Freund Amelies, lernen. Eine gefährliche Aufgabe, denn Myrnin ist merkwürdig, irgendwie krank.

In Midnight Alley geht es um einiges "ruhiger" zu als im letzten Band. Eine Untergrundgemeinschaft macht Jagd aud Micheal, Eve's Bruder Jason taucht immer wieder auf der Bildfläche auf, zusammen mit einigen ermordeten jungen Mädchen und Claires Arbeit bei Myrnin ist alles andere als ungefährlich. Claire tut mir wirklich leid. Es werden ihr sehr viele Geheimnisse aufgebunden und langsam aber sicher weiß sie nicht mehr wie sie damit umgehen soll. Dazu kommt noch das im Glass House eine angespannte Stimmung herrscht seit Micheal sich entschieden hat zum Vampir zu werden. Shane kann seinem Freund diesen Vertrauensbruch einfach nicht verzeihen und so kommt es oft zu Szenen die fast eskalieren. Es gibt diesmal wirklich viele Handlungsstränge die am Ende alle zusammengeführt werden.

Am wichtigsten ist denke ich Claires Abendschule bei Myrnin. Sie erfährt viele Dinge über die Vampire, Dinge die aufjedenfall geheim bleiben müssen und die alles verändern könnten. Man wird immer weiter in die Welt der Vampire hineingezogen und schwankt immer wieder zwischen Wut weil Myrnin versucht Claire umzubringen, und Mitleid weil er dies nicht mit Absicht tut. Von allen Charakteren die bisher im Laufe der Reihe eingeführt wurden, ist der alte Vampir wirklich der tragischte. Irgendwie war er mir sympathisch. Man bekam manchmal einen Eindruck davon wie er war bevor er angefangen hat schwächer zu werden.

Die Beziehung zwischen Claire und Shane ist zwar immernoch an dem Punkt vom letzten Buch, aber es gibt wieder einige prickelnde Szenen zwischen den beidend und auch bei Eve und Micheal gab es die ein oder andere Stelle wo man dachte, ja, die lieben sich wirklich. Micheals Rolle als Anführer und großer Bruder kommt hier noch mehr zu Geltung als bisher. Jetzt wo er ein Vampir ist fühlt er sich noch verantwortlicher für die Gruppe, allen voran Claire die ja noch sehr jung ist.

Alles in allem ist das wieder eine gelungene Fortsetzung der Morganville Vampire. Viel mehr kann ich auch gar nicht sagen ohne etliche Dinge zu verraten. Mir gefiel Midnight Alley sehr gut. Es war spannend von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite und macht Lust auf die weiteren Bände der Reihe und darauf, was noch alles auf einen zu kommt. Bei mittlerweile fast 12 Büchern dürfte das nicht wenig sein und ich bin gespannt was die Autorin noch alles aus dem Hut zaubert. (less)

So let us begin, as I normally do, with a plot summary.... and I've deleted this a few times because my openers were a bit snarky – but the plot of this book was a problem to me.

Stuff happened. There are EVENTS. Random stuff happening, but they're not really linked as a plot. There's no coherent whole and, in some ways, Claire feels completely dropped into storylines that don't concern or involve her. There's a lot happening that doesn't advance the plot, storylines kind of limping along without going anywhere but above all, these events and plot lines are not linked. There's a tangle of stuff happening rather than a coherent plot.

The dominant story line is that Amelie, big Founder Vampire, to whom Claire has pledged herself (for some reason. Technically to protect her friends but the at the same time it's made clear that the protection doesn't extend to them) has ordered Claire to become the apprentice to Myrnin, an ancient and knowledgeable vampire. Myrnin is ill and Amelie wishes to preserve his knowledge as much as possible by using Claire's superbrain (I know I know, after reading Glass House and The Dead Girl's Dance it's bemusing to think Claire even has a brain, but remember she's supposed to be super smart). To further complicate things, the illness makes Myrnin violent, unpredictable, unstable and dangerous – and he's killed his 5 previous apprentices. Myrnin's illness is degenerative and, surprise, all the vampires have it! So it's only a matter of time before everyone dies – and it's Claire's job to continue his work and find a cure!

Apparently this is a bad thing. Since out of the hundreds of vamps in Morganville we've seen 2 who are worth a sunscreen.

But against that we have Monica sucking up to Claire to get information for Oliver. Even though any sane person would realise how impossible this is, the master vampire plotter thinks that Monica who pushed Claire down a flight of stairs, kidnapped her, beat her, poured acid on her and tried to get 3 men to drug and rape her, totally has a chance of becoming Claire's BFF. Claire, for some gods unknown reason, doesn't respond with “go die in fire you repellent haemorrhoid of a human being” and is both polite and offers tuition to Monica's side-kick.

Finally Claire has found someone whose genius matches and goes beyond, slightly, that of her own. I really like Myrnin. His character definitely ups the ante because you never know what the heck he's going to do, or if his manic state really is just that. I still never understand what side he's playing for, and it seems as thought he will be the one to tip the scales of power in Morganville, eventually, if not just now.

Shane is still Claire's boyfriend, and his father is still bat-poop crazy, which almost got Shane killed, and I have a feeling will continue to be a burden over his head. Shane bears the weight of his family's tragedy on his shoulders, despite there having been nothing he could have done. His dad, Frank Collins, is a tragedy in and of himself. I always cringe inside when Claire has to witness Shane receiving one of Frank's beat downs.

But, Claire's backbone is continuously being strengthened and I love how she has come to stand up for herself to this point, not only against Monica and her wing-women, but against Amelie and Oliver as well. She's also learned enough about Myrnin, manic or not, to be able to use it to her benefit and stand up against him. Her brief episode of using drugs, while not your average, human poison-of-choice, was typical of the struggles a teenager would face in any town, it just has a Morganville twist. The drug that made Claire learn so much more quickly probably wouldn't be a choice for many, but her hunger for knowledge matches the thirst of the undead of Morganville.

The biggest plot revelation in this book is that, the vampires are dying. They're sick with some type of disease and Claire is ordered by her Patron to work to help find a cure. Time is short and the need is great, because the worse the vampires get, the more risk the humans of Morganville are in. Monica gets a taste of whats coming to her, but the blame is placed on Claire, even though it's Monica's fault. My question is, why didn't Claire get hurt when she took the same drug that Monica did? What's so different about Claire? It can't be the tie that she has to Amelie, right? I mean, it really couldn't be that simple? Maybe it will be in books to come? I hope that question gets answered.

I really feel like other reviewers are a little hard on Claire. She's only 16. While she has a brilliant academic mind, her common sense and naivety matches that of a 16 year old. Sometimes when I catch myself berating her stupid decisions, I remind myself that she's. Only. 16. I think people should lighten up just a little, she's a great MC and the series has still been a lot of fun. I can't wait to read more.(less)

Still enjoying the Morganville Vampires series. This book is my favorite of the three that I've read so far, mostly because of Myrnin, a new character who is a manic-depressive, batshit insane genius. I identify with Claire's drive to learn, and, even though it was cringe-worthy, I understand that her brief foray into drugs (even smart-making drugs like the crystals she steals from Myrnin's lab) is another facet of her being a teenager. Having read the first two books of the series, I was looking forward to reading this one because I wanted to see how the Morganville story progresses. I totally did not see the whole thing coming about the fact that the vampires were dying and sterile... but loved how the plot played out. *Interesting character introduction. Myrnin. Insane but brilliant vampire. Lot of potential with this character. High shiver & squick factor.

Wow...Rachel Caine does it again. Even with all the vampire books out their The Morganville Vampires stand out as some of the scariest and deadliest out there.

This is a fast paced, page turning, heart pounding novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat, all packed in with outstanding relationships between the characters. These books scream immaturity. I feel like Caine is trying to bash teens over the head with all these silly morals. Furthermore; Claire, Shane, Eve, and Micheal are all intolerable idiots. *BUT* I'm entertained, and this series is my first fun, thoughtless read of the summer.
