"You want to know the truth."

Sonea has learned much since she was but a penniless urchin possessing an awesome untapped ability. She has earned the grudging respect of her fellow novices and a place in the Magicians' Guild. But there is much she wishes she had never learned--what she witnessed, for example, in the underground chamber of the mysterious High Lord Akkarin

It wasn't that complicated a plot, or that original a premise -- to be honest, much of the setting reminded me of Raymond E. Feist's Krondor mixed with his magicians on Kelewan. Regardless, I enjoyed reading the books and read them very quickly: one a day, just about. They're light, easy reads, in my opinion. If you're looking for something long and epic, look somewhere else, but if you want something to take up a boring weekend or something, I think these books would do it nicely.

This last book in the trilogy is the best by far. I really enjoyed it. I'd recommend reading the trilogy together and in order, which is probably something normal people would do anyway. I think while each one has a complete story arc, they form a much more complex and satisfying whole all together. Normally I advocate reading books haphazardly and maniaclly, but really, these could be just one big long novel if people were willing to carry around a 1000 page book.

This book is one of my all-time favorites, and that's in spite of (view spoiler)[the devastating ending (which I wish Canavan would re-write!). There were definite possibilities for it to go in a different direction. Maybe the author didn't want it to be predictable, in which case she succeeded. Maybe it needed to end this way for some purpose to be revealed in the follow-up Traitor Spy series. Or maybe tragic endings are sometimes better for the quality and the emotional impact, whether we enjo...more

I'm about a 150 pages in and this one is, by far, my favorite of the series.

Just finished and I really enjoyed this one. I can't honestly say that it kept me guessing 'till the end though. This is perhaps my biggest complaint with the writing. It tends to telegraph itself. Not so that it ruins the story over-all but enough so that there aren't any real surprise "twists".

3,5 stelle totali a tutti i libri.

I am moderately satisfied with the series, though not with the first book. What I think about each of the three books: 1) "The Guild": almost half of the book is spent relating the tentatives of Sonea, supported by a friend and the Thieves, to conceal herself from the Guild magicians: I think it is a waste of time and energy, because every reader undestands since a few pages that she's going to be captured and instructed from the Guild (it is impossible not to undestand it: the story is related...more

After finishing The High Lord, I wished the previous two books in the trilogy were written like this book. Unlike the previous two books, things start happening in this one. Important things. Not things that will affect Sonea or some minor character, but rather the fate of the entire land.
The last hundred or so pages are incredible - fast, action packed and unpredictable. Everything that the other two books aren't. I couldn't put the book down. Also, the number of deaths in this one is ridiculou...more

High Lord was a revelation for me, for reasons entirely personal. Well, plot wise all the various strands came together in a way that was not entirely unexpected, but fantastic and satisfying all the same. However, what left me breathless was when we got to know Akkarin, the High Lord, much better than we have in previous books.

I loved a mage you see, long ago. I met him in a book. I followed him eagerly through six volumes over and over, and each time he died it shattered me. He was a study in...more

In the conclusion to “The Black Magician Trilogy”, readers continue to follow Sonea, a young girl from the poorest part of the city as she struggles to find her place in the Magicians Guild. While her fellow novices seem more willing to accept her, Sonea is still prisoner to the High Lord of the Guild, Akkarin. Yet Sonea finds herself with questions; are Akkarin and his reasons are evil as Sonea once believed, why does the High Lord practice black magic, and what role will Sonea play in his plan...more

This is one of those books that when you finish it you feel empty. As if you suddenly don't know what to do with the rest of your life because the book is FINISHED!

Gaahhhh! I loved this book so much, I've read it more times than I care to count and yet each time I finish it I react in the exactly same way.

It's the final book in the trilogy so naturally you should read the other two first (Th Magician's Guild and The Novice) and although the other two are great this one just takes everything you...more

There's just something about the way Trudi Canavan writes that completely sucks me in.

I first read the Black Magician Trilogy around four years ago and I loved it. I eventually bought myself the trilogy so I could re-read it whenever I want and only the best of the best make it to my bookshelf.

Sonea is an incredibly strong female character. She rarely shows weakness and is quick on her feet in tricky situations. The way she held herself through all the bullying could be pretty inspiring for any...more

I really have no words to describe how disappointed I was with the last 8 - 10 pages of this book. Other than that I found all of the books equally riviting and fun to read. Some how the characters are well developed despite the fact that we never get a straight on descriptive paragraph. I love when a writer has the skills to convay all parts of a character through actions and dialogue rather then through long list descriptions ( big fan of the show, don't tell style).
More writers should be able...more

This is a review of the overall series, and I'm struggling a bit with what to write without making this a spoiler review, but here are a few thoughts:

- I enjoyed the series, but I'm putting it firmly in the "good not great" category (hence the 3 star rating). As so often happens with YA fiction, it just doesn't have the full depth or the originality that would move it up a notch or two, which is unfortunate since there are definitely books out there which prove YA fiction need not be shallow or...more

A perfect end to the series. In comparrison to the other two books it is the best of the lot and if you have read the first two or just the first and you are wondering whether it's worth waiting a few more days to get the next one. Think again. You need this and i mean NOW.

Predictable? ...... maybe? In a way. You already know, at the first page of the first book, that there is going to be a massive ending that will make the 1000+ pages you read before a worth while and pleasurable dedication of...more

I really think Ms. Canavan has worked hard to improve her writing throughout these books. It is just a disappointment that this version of these books was allowed to be published. The descriptions and general writing are so good and refined, but the plot remains a major disappointment. She needed an editor or publisher willing to spend more time refining the plot so it did not overwhelm with foreshadowing.

As the novels continued, Ms. Canavan seemed to begin using "false foreshadowing" where the...more

A wonderful climax to a spellbinding trilogy, The High Lord lived up to all my expectations. It is a great culmination of Sonea’s adventures as the only slum dweller to be accepted into the ranks of the Magician’s Guild. Canavan’s storytelling is brilliant and makes it easy for readers to become emotionally invested in her characters. I especially loved Ceryani’s role in this novel, as it seemed very fitting to have Sonea’s childhood friend involved in the dangers she f...more

If you have not read the book then I will limit my comment to say I liked it a lot. The rest of you (or if you do not care about spoilers...and it will be completely spoiled) can read the following section with spoilers.

(view spoiler)[Having seen the High Lord kill before her eyes, was something that will change her. The High Lord starts giving her hidden knowledge and the knowledge is too terrifying to ignore....assuming he is not lying to her. The Sachakans think the Guild has stopped using th...more

I would highly recomend this book, as it is my favourite out of all of the books in the Black Magician Trilogy. The characters are brilliant and so is the plot. I am 13 and I read this book non stop until I had finished it and almost cried at the ending, which was sad, but fitting I think. The way Trudi Canavan ended the book was refreshing compared to all the ending in most books where everything is so happily ever after.

I have yet to read the books that lead off from this one and am not sure...more

Focusing on the mysterious Akkarin and his many secrets, this final instalment of The Black Magician Trilogy sees Imardin in turmoil due to a series of murders that are, seemingly, brought about by Black Magic. Our heroine, Sonea, soon finds out the surprising truth of how her guardian is related to these suspicious deaths and is forced to question everything she has previously believed. Imardin in grave danger, Sonea must make a decision that will not only decide her fate, but the fate of all o...more

I really wish I could give this book 4 and a 1/2 stars. It almost reached the point of OMG I love you 5 stars, but didn't quite make it. Regardless it was a really solid read and highly enjoyable. I love it when a series rips the carpet out from under you and laughs at your expectations and this book did it to me oh so well.

I also grew to adore the "evil" High Lord Akkarin while reading this book. The way his relationship with Sonea progressed throughout the book kept me curious and concerned f...more

“So what were you [Sonea] and Dorrien discussing before?' Akkarin asked.
She turned to regard him. 'Discussing?'
'Outside the farmhouse when I was buying the food.'
'Oh. Then. Nothing.'
He smiled and nodded. 'Nothing. Amazing subject, that one. Produces such fascinating reactions in people.”
