This is a very funny and sweet book with really good illustrations. Wonderful for kids who love dogs. And it's a perfect read aloud book. Enjoyable for adults as well as young children.

Gracie the dog likes her quiet routine in her quiet house. But one day, painters show up. Noisy painters. They disturb Gracie's quiet routine. Gracie barks and barks and barks. Instead of the painters leaving, they throw Gracie out! So Gracie decides to run away. Someone left the gate open, so away she flew!

So begins the Great Gracie Chase. Everyone realizes that Gracie is loose and begin to chase her down the street and through the town. She leads them through the fountain, all except the cat,...more

I got this book from Scholastic.com when looking for ideas on exactly how to carry out my Suggested Reading Lesson Plan. They said this book would be good for sequencing and when I was looking at it, it would be good for sequencing. Also, the children could do an accordion book. There are plenty of ideas to do with this book and I didn't know if this would be the best book. But they have good pictures, and it would be a good book to hook the children. I will put this on my list as a good book fo...more

Cynthia Rylant and Mark Teague were a great combination for this book.

Mark's rich gouache painting gives the dog life. There is much excitement when the dog runs away from the whole crew.

One thing I didn't go for is it felt the village continued on forever. It didn't seem to have a rhyme or reason. Was the village plotted out in advance?

Cynthia did a great job with brevity yet keeping the text exciting.

Thsi is a story abotu a dog who likes the quiet but when it's interupted she runss away and causes chaos throughout the town. This is a fun book for maybe reading and then asking the kids what makes them upset somtimes. And how they can runaway when their upset but they can maybe take a walk or count to ten or talk about how to deal with a situation that upsets them. Its a good discussion creatior btu a fun read at the same time. good for k-2nd grade.

I would give this book one and a half stars, most likely.
"The Great Gracie Chase" certainly is an amusing ride, as Gracie, the dog that loves peace and quiet, leads her entire neighborhood on a chase that will not cease until Gracie is satisfied that the neighborhood behind her has once again settled into a peaceful quiet.
Readers of all ages and types will enjoy this quick read.

In this great read aloud book we meet Gracie- a cute, well behaved dog. One day the painters come to her house and disturb her peace and quiet, so Gracie decides she must get out of the house and go for a walk. Soon the whole neighborhood is chasing Gracie! Young children really get a kick out of this story, and find something to giggle about on every page. Great for read alouds, too!

Fun story about a little dog who leads an entire town on a chase, only to come back home on her own. It's a good collaboration between Cynthia Rylant and Mark Teague. The story is simple, yet entertaining and the illustrations are colorful and nicely detailed. We love Gracie's expressions. Would be a good book for beginning, middle, and end.

A fun dog chase story. Gracie is a very good dog, who loves a quiet house. She enjoys her nice quiet house until one day when the noisy painters come and her world gets turned upside down, so she does what any sensible dog would do, she bolts, causing a bit of an uproar. Fits nicely with the dog theme going through most of our reads at the moment.

A wonderful story about a cute dog named Gracie. She's always been a good dog who highly enjoyed quiet a home until the noisy painters arrived and total chaos errupted. The kids highly enjoyed the story and illustrations during preschool storytime. I would definitely read this book again!

A dog that cherishes peace and quiet takes off when painters make too much of a ruckus in his home, and the growing group of people on his tail simply cannot catch the cute canine. This literary romp was a joy to read. My little one who was utterly delighted by this fast paced adventure.

This is a good book to read to students in lower grades. The reader can engage them by adding drama which will help to build the climax of the story.

Instructional possibilities:

Read aloud and discusion
Have students write and draw about their favorite part of the story

This is a more primary text that uses varied sentence length and repetition of sentence structure very well. The story is funny and identifiable for children. I'd feel very comfortable using it with a group of children and it would easily maintain student interest.

Gracie causes quite a ruckuss in a town when she escapes from her house after being put out. What starts with just the painters and workers chasing after her, ends with a town full of people chasing after her. What will stop her?

I bought this because I love Cynthia Rylant- but I also like Mark Teague. I wondered if I would like it as well as I liked Poppleton. I don't- but then- I LOVE Poppleton books. I liked this one- but I didn't LOVE it.
Rukia Rogers
So maybe its not the book with a profound message. But every preschool class that I've read this book to loves it. Its fun with wonderful illustrations as Gracie leads the whole neighborhood in a wild chase.
Gina
Absolutely adorable! Quick book Megan and I read aloud together because someone mailed it to us as a gift. The main character looks so much like our old dog, Spanky with a personality to match.
Pamela Cockerell
a fun book about a dog who likes her peace and quite. this would make a great read aloud because its very intense and would make for an interactive book.
Kate Conley
"Once there was a little round dog named Gracie Rose..." Adorable story of a little round dog who could run pretty fast in spite of herself. Super cute!
Tricia
dog runs, everyone chases. typical of dogkind, when the chase stops, she returns home on her own. i guess it's cute but not feeling it.
Cindy
Great story! Very cute! Would be ideal when teaching about sequencing. This book has great adjectives and vocabulary in general.
Madison
This would be a good book for sequencing. Students would be able to remember what happened easily and put it in order.
Michele
Story of a dog that runs away and causes much trouble. (Similar to The Gingerbread Man.) Simple, cute illustrations.
Pam Horton
This is another awesome mentor text from Cynthia Rylant--repetitive lines, bold print, engaging text!
Melissa
Curtis enjoys the story of the entire town chasing after the dog.
Molly
