I sympathies with Chekhov’s characters, both in his fictions and plays; poeple who are deep in pain and disatsters, …and their hands are not long enough to chang their world around…
The last statement of Chekhov’s plays describes alomost the whole piece:
In Sea-Gul’s end, The doctor says: The fact is, Konstantin Gavrilitch has shot himself …
At Cherry Orchard’s end, when all are gone, Firs, the old valet (waiter) says: Life has slipped by as though, I hadn’t lived. I lie dow...more

We chose this play to read as a group to end our year of Russian literature. They say the first time you read it you are indifferent and don’t understand. You need to study it further. I think that is true. It seems to be a play about nothing. When I was asked what it was about, I couldn’t say. It was a household with three sisters and a brother and their various partners. I couldn’t say much more than that. We gave Nicole, the woman whose apartment we meet at, a book about Chekhov and it...more

The play follows the domestic and almost boring life of three sisters. And though the plotline seems simple enough, trust a genuis like Chekov to weave more into it. Like most of his plays, it realistically captures the subtle tragedies of domestic existence. My favorite Chekov play, so far.

I have to say that my opinion of this particular work may be jaded by the production I saw, which did not seem to understand Chekhov at all. On the other hand, the plodding and ridiculous nature of the script doesn't merit much better than a one star regardless...

A complicated play, you have to read between the lines, and as the play goes on, find out what the metaphors really mean in the turbulent family's life. "What does it matter?"

Like a lot of Russian literature, this one is brimming with histrionics. I think I'd need to see an actual production of this play in order to 'get it.'

Read to impress a boy. But I wound up liking it in the end, so it worked out ok.
