Le onzième commandement.
Le onzième commandement.
As the Supreme Court was considering if the 10 Commandments were appropriate decoration in public schools in the '60s, sf writer & history professor Lester del Rey was pondering what might be the result of established state religion. He set the stage for such in The 11th Commandment.

In 1962, before “the pill” and before Roe v. Wade, Lester del Rey (whose name would soon become synonymous with Ballantine Science Fiction) wrote The Eleventh Commandment. Perhaps, del Rey was disillusioned with the Catholic position on birth control in the years before Dr. Paul Erlich set society on fire with his The Population Bomb. Perhaps, del Rey was reacting to the hottest years of the Cold War (culminating in the “Cuban Missile Crisis” later in 1962) and the potential for nuclear war to d...more
. . . What a pleasant surprise this two dollar (ten dollars shipping) book has been! No, the writing continues to be pedestrian, the plot is perhaps a little contrived at times, the characters are more stock and wooden then the yard at Totem down on 51st (that’s local, Edmonton colour), but . . .
This is a sort of mainstream, white bread work from 1962 somehow filled with drugged-out orgies in churches, socially sanctioned adultery, and empowered (in an odd way) women. . .

In my opinion, what really places this book ahead of many other books from the period (the 1960's) is the ending which was completely unexpected and unusual for this type of story. I won't give it away but it was certainly a shock. A...more

This a better than average science fiction novels owing to its relevance to current affairs and particularly interesting to me for its religious angle.
This isn't the world's best written book but it is thought-provoking.
When I originally read it, it had me thinking a lot about religion and about the reasons that established churches have made the rules that they have made (and, in my opinion, have totally forgotten the original reasons).
In my opinion, a lot of the rules that many established churches have about homosexuality, gender roles, marriage, and birth control fall back into the category of fear of dwindling and becoming unimportant or...more
