In this famously transitional work of 1920, Freud sets out to explain the prevalence of psychic activity that can't obviously be attributed to the organism's inclination to reduce tension, the reduction of which produces pleasure. After all, as a clinician, he was seeing neurotic and hysterical patients--very tense people. So, via a speculative tour of psychoanalytic theory circa 1920 as well as of early-20th-century biology, Freud arrives at the provisional conclusion that there are two drives ...more

Indeed, some may find this to be a pleasure or a pain to read. Given that the theory of instincts was covered by Freud in some earlier works, it was no surprise to find him covering some old ground here. Although I am sure that the pleasure principle is well known, basically it is the suggestion that people have an instinctive urge toward experiencing pleasure and shielding themselves from pain.

Of course, any book by Freud would not be complete without touching upon the subject of dreams, and he

Freud has an interesting theory, but he needs a fuckton of pages, filled with meandering, dull paragraphs,to philosophise about it. I'm still not sure if I got it right what he meant.

It's frustrating that each of Freud's works begins with an interesting concept, and then proceeds to meander aimlessly between tiresome pseudo-philosophy and unsubstantiated pseudo-psychology.

"We must be patient and await fresh methods and occasions of research. We must be ready, too, to abandon a path that we have followed for a time, if it seems to be leading to no good end."

In Freud's Beyond the Pleasure Principle, he advances a comprehensive argument in favor of the notion of a death instinct or death drive that works independently of the pleasure principle as a function of the human mind. Freud brings to bear his formidable reasoning skills and elastic prose in evidencing this v

Beyond the Pleasure Principle is an extraordinary tome i came across. Freud has earned reputation of a daring skeptic throughout his life. During his lifetime he was accused of floating subversive ideas among folk. he always came up with revolutionary theories. 'Beyond the Pleasure Principle' rests among the most revolutionary accounts. The concept of death instincts is described in it for the very first time. Instinct is an urge inherent in organic life to restore an earlier state of things- th ...more

Takeaway points:
1. "It is clear that in their play children repeat everything that has made a great impression on them in real life, and that in doing so they abreact the strength of the impression and make themselves master of the situation. The play of children is influenced by a wish that dominates them the whole time- the wish to be grownup and to be able to do what grownup people do."
2. "We may regard the common traumatic neurosis as a consequence... not to the effects of mechanical violenc

Beyond the Pleasure Principle is a short essay that explores the why of the human mind's mechanics. It complements Freud's greater works nicely, but don't let its size fool you. Prepare to read this more than once and pore over Freud's fast-paced figurative language that manages to cover literature, philosophy, biology and more.

If literary theory is your thing, then you obviously need a little Freud in your face.

An interesting, short book/long essay by Freud complicating his theory of the pleasure principle based on his post-WWI experiences with traumatized patients. Essentially, the pleasure principle holds that human beings will always try to minimize unpleasure while maximizing pleasure (this is pretty similar to what Lacan would later term jouissance, the excess of enjoyment). The reason we're capable of functioning in the real world--as opposed to just going around having sex with everyone and eati ...more

Somebody has scribbled notes on nearly every page of my copy of this, making comparisons to Nietzsche and Popper...it's telling that I enjoyed reading those more than the text itself.

Freud's clarity as a writer cannot be denied, at least when equipped with the right translation. This and CaiD make quite the powerful duo.

This being my second time through BtPP I continue to be compelled by some of his thinking. I'm fond of his frankness, and his alternating personalities. Is this a humble hypothesis? Is he actually arrogant and manipulative? Who cares?

His formulation of the "libidinal" economy of the mind is interesting enough to warrant brain time. It's not as entertaining a

Well, this was a super complicated book, and Freud's thinking was more fractured and hard to follow than in what other of his works I've read. That said, this is where his idea of the death drive is formulated and that counts for something for sure - I mean, it's pretty radical to think we have a drive compelling us to being inanimate as opposed to one which wants further complexity and progress.

So, this was an unpleasurable ;) but interesting read, and I think I need to take a small break from

Beyond the Pleasure Principle is an extraordinary book, arguably one of the most important books ever written. Rather ashamed to admit this but I’ve never actually read Freud; given the amount of critiques, good and bad, that I’ve heard and read over the years, I decided it was time to read his work for myself. This book is really a short read that explores the “why” of our mind’s mechanics and his theory that we humans are guided by two instincts; the life instinct, Eros, which preserves all th ...more

A very short work, much of which is quite recondite. Much of what Freud writes he admits is speculative. Yet the idea that there is a life and a death instinct in all organisms is certainly something that can be discussed at a metapsychological level.

Freud does raise an interesting question about the very idea of science and its relationship to speculation. Note:

"It may be asked whether and how far I am myself convinced of the truth of the hypotheses that have been set out in these pages. My an

Given the amount of feminist critiques of Freud I have read, I finally decided it was time to read the man's own work. This book describes his theory that human beings are guided by two warring instincts: the life instinct, Eros, which preserves all things, and the death instinct, served by the pleasure principle, which seeks to return the human being to an inanimate state (i.e. death).

Beyond the Pleasure Principle, while short, is a tough read--Freud packs way too much information into each sen

Freud's work is always contradictory. He always corrects his own theories. I'm not saying that this is a bad thing! In the contrary, it is a healthy thing to admit that you might be wrong. Nonetheless, it makes reading Freud a bit confusing.

Freud was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, who created an entirely new approach to the understanding of the human personality. He is regarded as one of the most influential - and controversial - minds of the 20th century.

Sigismund (later changed to Sigmund) Freud was born on 6 May 1856 in Freiberg, Moravia (now Pribor in the Czech Republic). His father was a merchant. The
