Normally, I don't bother with reviewing books, but this one really deserves some explanation. I picked up this book expecting it to be one of the worst reads ever. Surprisingly, it moved fast and it really was engaging...except things just didn't make sense. And even the world of fiction and fantasy have rules.

<spoiler>Firstly, it's awesome that she's got kick-ass skills and a healthy dose of potty-mouth, but then things turned unexpectedly sour. While I was excited by the pros More...

Not what I was expecting. Very different then what I originally thought this was going to be about.
Darkness Becomes Her had a very strong beginning, but somewhere between the voodoo visit and the absolutely rushed relationship that followed ...it kinda lost me.
The plot concept is intriguing, the writing well done, it's characters likable and I even thought the combination of paranormal and mythology was cool, but in the end, it just felt...forced. To many elements thrown together al More...

The year is 2026 and 17 year old Ari Selkirk is searching for answers about what really happened to her mother 13 years ago that forced her to leave her behind in foster care. Ari, who has silver hair that seems to have a mind of its own, as well as blue eyes that can pierce your soul, has been with foster parents ever since and she doesn’t quite fit in with the rest of her age group.

Her current foster parents, Br More...

Holy crap this book is amazing!!! It starts out with one thread, then slowly more and more are woven in until it’s a complex web of unique personalities, history, and the supernatural. The story is extremely compelling and unlike other supernatural fare in its complex history and wicked smart world-building.

Ari heads into New 2, the dangerous secluded sector separated from the rest of the US in what was previously New Orleans, a place riddled with rumors of dangers and the supernatur More...

Ari is a freak. With her odd teal eyes and long, silvery hair, she is used to being different, and after spending her life going from foster home to foster home, she is used to being alone. Feeling the need to discover her past, Ari goes to the psychiatric hospital where her mother killed herself 13 years ago. There she given a box with a message from her mother: to run. With foreign sword-weilding figures pursuing her, Ari knows she must return to her birthplace of New Orleans. Now known as More...

So I really loved this book! I absolutely loved the idea of New 2. New 2 was created after New Orleans was completely wiped away from hurricane Katrina. Rumors say that everyone who lives there today has supernatural powers of some sort. Vampire, witches, seers, shape shifters, even Gods. It's the story of 17-year-old, foster child Ari. While searching for her birth mother Ari stumbles upon her family's curse: At the age of 21 every girl from Ari's family goes insane, and by that time the girl w More...

I just finished this book 30 minutes ago and I still can't stop thinking about it. I am majorly in fangirl mode here. The characters, setting, the WORDS, it left me in awe. Kelly has this way with words that is descriptive and can leave your pulse pounding with just one line. DBH played with my emotions, I was left crying, laughing, shuddering numerous times. Ari was full of attitude that I admired (girl crush for sure), she was downright brave, and she's just so DETERMINED. Determined to find o More...

I have been looking forward to reading "Darkness Becomes Her" ever since I saw it on Goodreads a while back, and while it didn't knock my socks off it was a really good read.

Ari Selkirk is seventeen and after being passed from one foster home to another for most of her childhood decides to find out about her birth mother. After visiting the doctor at Rocquemore House and being told that her mother had committed suicide shortly after she wa More...

This story has been on my mind since the day I finished it, mainly because of the kick-ass twist I didn't see coming. When you discover at the end of the novel what Ari actually is, you will be blown away. I mean, I spent the entire novel trying to figure out why vampires, witches and every other monster Ari came in contact with were afraid of her and when I finally got there I didn't see it coming. It was a twist that was so original I didn't even suspect it.

There was so much action and butt-kicking in this book, I had to read it with a heating pad on my tush. You know how it's been mentioned that some books are a little "same song, second verse?" or even "same song, same chorus"? Well, if the mythology trend continues, you might feel that way about some myth book in the future. Chances are you will find Darkness Becomes Her a highly original and exciting thrill ride. I sure did. The story world of this novel is so incredibly fas More...

In case you couldn't tell from the cover, this novel had a bit of a Gothic tone, and that made the novel all that more awesome. (Although if I'm perfectly honest the cover really doesn't do it for me.... though it is a prettier irl.) But the thing that I really loved about this novel was the references to ancient mythology, which I was not expecting at all! It was a welcome surprise!

This novel is a must read debut! There's a unique setting, an eclectic cast of characters, and a surpris More...

There's no mystery to this book if you know Greek mythology. Of course you won't find Athena dropping the f-bomb in those. So unnecessary. Ari, the heroine is so unlikable, the author goes out of her way to show how strong she is physically though. Ari's romance with Sebastian is contrived, there is no anticipation or build up to their romance other than Sebastian smelling nice, so it really doesn't feel like there's a pay off. The ending is very predictable since you know Ari will get help. Th More...

A place filled with different creatures that are all afraid of a girl that is a bit different herself sounds pretty awesome. In New 2, Ari discovers that there are many freaks of nature, as she often describes herself, roaming around like: vampires, witches, half vampire/half witches, shapeshifters and…Athena. That’s right, the Athena many of us are familiar with from Greek Myths. You might be thinking to yourself that it looks like Kelly Keaton took on a lot for her first novel in this series a More...

There is so much going on for a book of relatively small size. This has been out for a while and I am embarrassed to admit that I put off reading it because I was judging the book by it's cover. For some reason I just associated the cover with ghosts and ghosts really aren’t my thing. Anyways, back to the story. I LOVED IT! There was never a dull moment. To be very honest, i waited for his book for months and months, truly expecting it to be a masterpiece.
I was not disappointed.

The main character, Ari is different from your typical heroine. She doesn't always save the day in a glory of power. But she doesn't need saving either. There is a good balance between her trouble making antics and her ability to save herself.
I don't need a prince, is the first impression she had one me and i liked her instantly.

Okay, so this is my first book review, and usually I will never, ever rate a book with only two stars. But this book really dissapointed me, and when i was all done reading it, I felt like chucking it at a wall.

The most important reason I had some bad thoughts about this book is because it was like a monster consuming all forms of fiction and fantasy literature, getting sick, and then puking it all into this book. So, yeah my initial reaction was, "Ew."

I really enjoyed the combination of mythology, paranormal, and post-apocalyptic New Orleans in Kelly Keaton's (aka Kelly Gay) first YA urban fantasy. The heroine, Ari, is a seventeen-year-old orphan looking for answers--who's her birth mother? Why did she give Ari up? And what exactly is it that makes her so weird?

What she finds takes her to "New 2", the now privately-owned former city of vampires and magic where misfits gather and an ancient Goddess lurks. And Ari discovers More...

I have literally devoured this book in the past two hours. I was recently sent this book to read and review and I decided that I would not read it until after the impending doom of this week's IGCSE exams; however, I got bored of revising and so I began to read 'Darkness Becomes Her'. This was a big mistake. Not because the book isn't good, because it is, but because after: 'just the first chapter', I literally could not put it down.

It is a very fast paced novel so I was turning page More...

Ancient magical families in New Orleans, Greek mythology alive and well (sort of) in the modern world, freaky, gorgeous teenagers, kick-ass heroine - these are all enticing ingredients that did not mix into quite the gumbo I was hoping for. When I tried describing the book to my 16-year-old fantasy/mythology-loving daughter, she said, "Oh, another girl who is cursed with gorgeousness? Men can't take their eyes off her shiny waist-length blonde hair - what a tragedy!" And when I told More...

Greek mythology seems to be a new trend in Paranormal Young Adult, and this novel was a perfect introduction to this trend. The mythology was weaved into the story very delicately, so as not to overwhelm the reader. And it also blended other paranormal trends into a nice melting pot of creatures in New 2. The setting of the novel, New 2, was a creative and interesting take on rebuilding a weather-ravaged city. It allowed the author to make New Orleans into her own world, whi More...

Percy Jackson meets Anne Rice. Throw in a little Twilight and Kim Harrison--that's the badass bounty-hunter aspect as well as the witches, vamps, and werewolves post-turn Hollows--and add a soupcon of True Blood southern ghoul-thic and you have some of the reconstituted world and story here. Now I myself recently defended in a good-reads review the highly derivative nature of many YA novels, particularly in the paranormal romance and dystopian genres because that aspect of a novel really doesn't More...

Well, I only got about half way through the book and it was like pulling myself uphill using only my elbows to get that far. The book started out pretty good, in fact that's why I bought it. I had read a sample of the first several pages on Barnes & Noble.com and it really got my interest, but after the first couple of chapters it all went downhill.
